From India To The West Indies
The abolition of slavery in the British West Indies in 1834, marked a watershed moment in our history, but it also created a void in the labor force that sustained the region's lucrative plantation economy. To fill this gap, a new system of coerced labor emerged: Indian indentureship.

The History of Sugar in Guyana
Просмотров 32514 дней назад
Guyana's history is inextricably entwined with the cultivation of sugar, even to the point of dividing the people of that country. While the roots of this industry are undoubtedly planted in the soil of African slavery, its growth has been nurtured by the sweat of Indian indentured labour. And while one might assume that this would bring descendants of the two peoples together, that has certain...

I can remember as a kid going to the Cinemax in GT 🎥🎥 Some people got arrested for not standing up for the national anthem when it was playing in the cinemas 🎥😠😠
The cinemas was a lifesaver 🎥🎥 And the cinemas was my second home growing up in GT and my favorite movies were kung fu movies and Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill movies 🎥😁😁
Bai I remember skulking school and going to strand cinema 🎥 in GT to watch 2 kung fu movies 🎥Ways of kung fu and heros of Shaolin 🎥 And me and some others kids got arrested and taken away to the police station 😭 Well we had to do some pushups and we got a few lashes in the police station 😠😠 The police asked us how we get into the cinema 🎥 at school hours and we told them that we bribe the doorman with 50 cent on the ticket 🎫 Then the police took us back to the strand cinema and he spoke to the manager and we got our money 💰 back And we got to watch the 2 kung fu movies for Free lol 😂😂😂😂

There is some talk about the reintroduction of a rail service in Guyana. Might be a small one in the city or something much larger. Let's see what happens!
PNC still remains a racist party because this was BURNHAM policy that is why Prime minister Modi of India did not recognise the PNC party.
This was a well organized military type operation and executed from a village known for its militancy and political support of the then opposition. It was a violent, savage and horrific period in the country, and it was done by criminals whose jailbreak was facilitated by higher ups. These murderous criminals, during their reign of terror, called themselves the “Buxton Freedom Fighters”.
Indo Guyanese disliks him, but his legacy for Guyana will never be forgotten or tarnished
Indo Guyanese didn't dislike or hate the man, just his policies. Then there were the little lords, who because of party membership used to feel empowered to be reckless. Then, too, the jokers that held high positions because of the same thing: there was a lot of incompetent people and that was just ONE of the reasons that the country went from bad to worse
I admired him for his academic brienlience but he was a dictatorship government. Guyana was still OK under his leadership. Days of cinemas in guyana was sweet memories. Well for one he never prevented guyanese from leaving guyana
He was not a dictator HD wanted good for all Guyanese.
Saw "Saturday night fever and grease at the Astor cinema. EVEN UNDER THE BURNHAM PNC LIFE WAS BEAUTIFUL WITH CINEMAS.BEAUTIFUL DAYS OF GUYANA
Life was indeed nice back then, when we lived with our parents. We hadn't a thought for the real world. But as we matured and began to fend for ourselves we found out about the real cost of living. But thanks for your contribution, it's what we want to encourage.
Me too I was born in 1998 3of June i travelled from wakenanam to paprika and take the train to Reading. Hope then crossover to Georgetown. It was the best time of my life travelling on the train.🙏🇬🇾🇨🇦
Good morning if you were born in 1998 you could not have travelled on the Parika to Vreed en Hoop train. For your information note the proper spelling of these place names.
some of you are saying it's the economy , but don't forget that burnham had all guyana's money in his name in the swiss bank. ..such a 'great' leader
Yeah burnham was a teef. He cared nothing about Guyana.
the pnc government admitted to making a mistake on cancelling the railways..the only mistake they ever admitted to...but they did not rectify it,,, sorry about no caps
Good documentary. However Mr Burnham was Prime Minister in 1972. He was the Political head of Government that is correct. He became President in 1980 following changes to the Constitution.
@@KeithCampbell-c5c You are quite correct sir! We did observe the culpa, 1970 should have read 1980, re to Guyana's change to a Republic and Mr. Burnham's from PM to President Thank you for contributing to our discourse!
He was a dictator and racist murderer
Pnc under Bhurnham and until now such an Evil force messengers of Satanic guides Guyana to Destruction Never Again
Only a careful study of the period in World history between 1947-1991, the operations of the KGB of the Soviet Union vs. The C.I.A. of America, with the experiences of Guatemala and Chile; as well as of the writings of Dr.cheddie Bharat Jagan, Father of the Nation will give a true picture of the contribution of Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham to the development of the country, Guyana today. Adverse commentators never mention the negative contributions of Daniel Prabhudas Debidin and the divisive theory of Apaan Jhaat which Dr.Jagan condemns in his book, "The West on Trial". This omission has been enough to give the impression to the unwary of the population of African descent that Dr.Jagan was the author, and therefore a racist. Under the system of first past the post, Debidin used this theory to advantage in his contest for the East Demerara constituency against John Carter who gained popularity through the League of Coloured Peoples because of the invaluable assistance that organization gave to farmers during periods of floods due to excessive May/June rains which devastated crops on which farmers depended. What is noteworthy is that in his victory speech he thanked his "friend, John Lucie Griffith" the third candidate who had entered the race with no other plan than that which appealed to the many African coconut manufacturers, that is, to deal with the then coconut beetle infestation of coconut trees, obviously giving rise to the belief that Griffith's motive was to split votes. and there's Richard Ishmael, then President of the British Guiana Trades Union Council whose negative contribution Dr. emphasises in his book, "The West on Trial. These writers know nothing of the hardships both Africans and East Indians experienced in British Guiana because of which the People's Progressive Party won 18 out of 24 seats in spite of the strong anti-PPP campaign of the elite of the society with the full support of the Daily Argosy which devoted a full anti-PPP candidate page on the Sunday before the elections. During the 1939-1945 World War, Guyanese, then British Guianese, found it necessary to heed the "Grow More Food Campaign* of Governor Sir Gordon Lethem because of the absence of imported foodstuff to which both Indians and Africans had grown accustomed. Perhaps it's unfortunate that the then expected open, perhaps atomic war between America and the West vs. The Soviet Union did not materialize, for then East Indians and Africans in today's Guyana would have been in the desirable firm bond of unity which those volunteers whose services Dr.Jagan Jagan commend in "The West on Trial" expected would have been the everlasting result of the sacrifice they made at personal cost and great risk Please read, "The West on Trial", for many of the comments made herein can only be referred to as biased propaganda.
We at ADP feel very humbled upon reading your words. It is certainly not the intention here to sow seeds of disunity but to encourage discourse - your comments are very much the kind of response we hope for. Thank you for your contribution.

Burnham was never to be trusted I learnt that at age 9 1953 stood in my father’s house along with Frank Vansertima miss Dey and talk much garbage and never spent one day in jail while all others were jailed . As a lawyer go check not in the same category as Haynes or B.O ,Adams . But he could talk . And he robbed Aunty Gertie sent her mad , also Fredrick Mahaica , took away Iggy Fredrick’s rice mill at Dundee , Tibut house at Belfield etc etc
He was a verbal idiotic stupid criminal who destroyed Guyana and spread racism . I was one black man that never bought into his nonsense

November 18-19, 1978 a group of individuals who left Jonestown and survived the Jim Jones deadly mix of Flavor-aide, a cheap knock off of Kool-Aid, that was laced with Potassium cyanide and Vallum, left the encampment under the guise of going on a "picnic" . They left the camp shortly after Senator Leo Ryan and his crew left the camp. They left for Matthews Ridge, some 30 miles away. they followed the train tracks, and were eventually picked up by the crew of the trains. It was unclear during the survivors story if it was a Passenger Train, Freight Train or an industrial train line. However they did describe a steel built bridge crossing a river. One of them was so afraid of heights she crawled across the bridge to make it to the other side.
