Welcome to my channel! I am Yasuhiko Higaki, an amateur music enthusiast from Japan. I play various instruments, including the dulcian, shawm, rackett, recorder, viola da gamba, and occasionally the Renaissance guitar.
I began as a recorder enthusiast but later developed an interest in the viola da gamba, which I taught myself. Over time, I explored other early music instruments and recently focused on double reed instruments like the dulcian, shawm, and rackett. Music is a hobby for me, and I have not received formal musical education.
While I enjoy ensemble playing with friends, this channel mainly features my solo multitrack recordings. I have participated in recorder ensembles since high school and continue to do so monthly. Though self-taught, I began learning the viola da gamba in my twenties and attended summer workshops by the VdGS Japan, receiving basic instruction from Shigenori Sennari. For the dulcian, I have been guided by Taro Hasegawa in playing and reed making.

Interesting insight into historic instrumentation. I can hear why the rackett fell out of fashion in favor of the bassoon, given that the bassoon sounds a bit less like an irritable duck.

I would guess that this is the first type of European music the Japanese People would've ever heard... I can imagine (without stretching my imagination too far) that the Portuguese and Dutch merchants would've been playing instruments similar to these, if not singing the same sort of thing. For sure, the people of Japan encountered and appreciated the charm of this type of music LONG before the average "Westerner" was aquatinted with "Gagaku" or any other classical Japanese music.
