Woodturning beginners how to make a new pen without a pen kit.
Stirling work. I love eccentric turning so am always looking for ways of counterbalancing the workpiece as I also have a 10x18 lathe which vibrates when working off centre.
Great I hope it helps. It still needs some refinements to speed setting up but I will attend to them in my next video.
At last. The annulus. I can really see the potential. If you look for a video "Circle cutting jig that rotates on its own axis like the moon" it shows a great mechanism that I'm going to try in the jig I will make. I used the same mechanism in my router circle cutter. Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome its great to see further work on an idea and see it evolve and someone elses skills and knowledge applied to it. If you can keep me posted that would be good,
The balance between making a jig that does everything or making jigs that do individual things is difficult to get right. Thanks for all the information.
Very true!
Yes. I am really enjoying the series thanks.
Awesome, thank you!
Looking forward to the next one. Thanks.
More to come . I hope I can keep you interested
It's a great jig. I'll be trying to work out how you implemented the annulus cutter as I already made a fluting jig like the Paul Howard one. Recently I made a router circle cutting jig that runs a baseplate inside 3 bearings , 120 degrees apart, maybe this concept will work out on this kind of jig too. Thanks for sharing.
Hope it helps thanks for the comment
Great stuff. I'll definitely be binge watching this series, looking for ways I can improve my own efforts at faux wood turning.
Thank you I hope you like the series.
The annulus concept is great. I've tried a few ways to make curved cuts which did not work out, so I think I'll try the annulus idea with a Foredom so I can use 1/4 router bits. Thanks for sharing.
Keep me posted if you can, Many thanks
Not an engineer just a chippy with many years of turning experience and building jigs. So I would strongly suggest you investigate the UHMW plastics widely available and use them anywhere you need a slide. It will eliminate many of the little blocks and added supports you have. I like your thinking👍
Thanks for that I'll have a look into it.
That looks totally amazing. I just said to my wife that it didn't look like it was being held by much wood, then you said the same thing. I wish you well in all that you do.
Thankyou. Woodturning can give one entertainment as well as satisfaction.
A basic attempt, but you did try it. You could have parted the base much thinner so it would look like an actual goblet base. Not bad I guess.
Yes I agree and the head of the goblet looks like it's stuck on the stem instead as part of the design. Onwards and upwards.
Would it help if the eccentric part was closer to the head stock?
Yes your right. It's just that I want to test the capabilities of my eccentric chuck and the mini lathe to their maximum.
Make yourself a puck to use with a live center that supports the end of the part during that eccentric turning operation. It should have an off center, center drilled hole on one side, and a PSA sanding disc ( or small spikes ) adhered to the other. Clock it correctly before applying pressure and you can turn eccentrics with greater support.
Mmmmmm interesting thanks for that. Ill look into it.
I have the Joyner Jig and I make a fair number of pendants, especially once I made a jig to use with the Joyner Jig. I make repeating patterns and use the same offset and change the index and my jig goes on top of a flat tool rest to then know where my diamond point carbide tool goes in the same spot each time
Great thanks for the info. I'm in the process of using a printed ruler on a wood clamp clamped to the lathe bed that rests against the tool rest banjo which has a reference mark on it. I have yet to use the idea. I've made a separate tool post to accept a small parting tool as my essential tremors make it awkward just using the tool rest.
They look amazing.
Thank you.
Another great and informative video. I might have to now make one of these for my ancient Coronet Major. Really like how these turned out.
Thanks hope you get a lot from it especially with Christmas on its way.
I would welcome seeing a video in which you describe how you made the chuck for pendants.
Hi thanks for asking here's a link. You can find others in the description of this video. ruclips.net/video/VtaOh6QpKEg/видео.html
A lot of vibration expected as you increase the eccentricity. Could you use your fluting and carving jig to cut the grooves while rotating the lathe by hand? This may provide a lot more control of cutting and no vibrations. Also less forces trying to fling the pendant blank off the chuck. Dave.
Good idea thanks, I may well do in the future. However I want to make it acceptable on the mini lathe, i've made a smaller version which works well and the vibration is not to much for the Axminster mini lathe. I'm in the process of finishing my next video which showes this, The larger version works fine on my larger lathe with no vibration so i can increase the speed to make turning easier.
I really enjoy your videos help me a great deal thank you..Am really happy with the axminster Aw205 little great lathe..😊
I'm chuffed you like it. Thanks for the comment it keeps me going.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk thank you pls make more videos thank you 😊
Will do thanks
How do you come up with not only the ideas but also the solutions?
I don't know it might be due to having a varied occupational background as an engineer, design draughtsman and applying that experience to my love of wood and woodturning. Being an old codger helps.
Masking tape and super glue is a recommended method with luthiers. Ive used it on a lathe and works well as long as the tape is of decent quality. Other method ive used is hot glue...then melted it off with meths but that can be a bit messy. Great video.
Thanks for the info! musch appreciated
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this. I try and make all my own bits and tools for wood turning.
Yes I agree there's something rewarding about making tools and jigs especially when they work.
You have a wonderful mind.
Thanks though some may say eccentric.Parden the pun.
Very nice I got the same lathe and chuck from watching your videos, great little tool love it,am waiting for winter cause it’s hot to work on it where I’m from...by the way where did you get the extra jaws for the chuck from? Thanks 😊
Thanks. The chuck I'm using is obsolete. The "VEVOR" CHUCK FOR AN 8INCH X 1 TPI DRIVE SHAFT OF THE AXMINSTER LATHE may have spare jaws check their web site.
Very nice.
Thanks much appreciated.
Thank you! Cheers!
Sharpen lathe tools
Very difficult to sharpen carbide insert tools. A diamond grinding wheel is needed. The tools I'm using are practically new, but if worn I can simply rotate the tip to a different cutting edge.
Good morning Derek, Can you help me please. I am just starting out wood turning, in fact I haven't turned anything yet. I have ordered an Axminster AW355 lathe and tools etc. Can you tell me where I can buy some nice dry wood for turning please. I have seen adverts by Amazon etc but I am afraid of getting ripped off. I would like some wood with character like Spelt or Burl woods. I will only use these when I have got more proficient at wood turning, but I would like to get some interesting woods to hold in stock. I am a professional Jewellery Maker & Designer and have been making high end gold and silver pieces for well over 35 years. By the way - I am a Yorkshire lad but now live in Gloucestershire. Many thanks in advance. Phil
"Turners Retreat" 01302 744344, " Exotic Hardwood UK Ltd" 01538 715060, Tyler Hardwoods 01672 871300 plus "David Biven Machinery" 01253 425793 have a small selection Exotic wood classification tend to offer the most attractive grain and figure and as a result are more expensive but WOW some of them are beautiful. ZIRACOTE, SNAKEWOOD, KINGWOOD, INDIAN ROSEWOOD, COCOBOLO, OLIVEWOOD For Burls try ABOYNA BURR, THUYA BURR, ELM BURR . I could go on hope this helps and good luck.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk Hi Derek, Thank you so much fr your quick response. I will chase it all up tomorrow. Do you have any tips for a newbie to save me getting into bad habits. Have a great evening. Phil
Yes always wear eye protection ie:- face visor it's amazing how wood bits find your eye they have a life of their own and know when your not wearing one. Also a dust mask when sanding. Happy turning.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk Thank you.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk People go on about ythe burr on gauges - why is the burr so important please? Phil
what size is the bowl gouge used to finish with
It was a 1/2 inch shaft diameter bowl gouge. If your ordering make sure the supplier knows this, as some use the flute width to determine the size. Hope this helps
Awesome, Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Glad you enjoyed it!
great result, thanks for sharing
No problem 👍
Nice I been waiting for this video i wasn’t sure the AW205 would be capable of turning bowls this video just made my decision better on this lathe…great work and thank you 😊
My pleasure
Great information, as always.
Thank you.
I would like tow know what speed you use for each applications
That's a difficult question as there is no digital speed readout on the lathe. For a general rule of thumb however, when drilling I recommend 700 rpm to 1000 rpm for drilling and 2000 rpm for turning with the carbide tipped tools. Sanding the same speed and max speed for buffing the finish.
For Turning sound timber divide 9000 by the diameter in inches. For tricky timber divide 6000 by the diameter in inches ie:- 6000/6 inches Dia = 1000 rpm. Hope that helps.
Is your bench grinder normal or slow speed? Some say slower speed is better and some say a normal one is still as good since the tools are HHS and won’t burn the steel of the gouges,Thanks for the info your experience is gold to us beginners..
Slow speed white wheels are OK for all steels, but your correct that High Speed Steel is ok with normal bench grinders although it will colour the edge of the tools a bit orange if you don't quench them. Slow wheels for Mild Steel. CBN (Carbic Boron Nitride) wheels are the best for both steels if you can afford them.
Hi Derek thank you for a very informative video, this is a real boon to any turner.
Thank you very much.
I'm new to all this. Great video. Would you recommend the carbide tip tools rather than the traditional ones?
Carbide tipped tools require less skill to use and create immediate results & dont need sharpening (which is another skill), although on soft woods they leave a poor finish. They are not kind to very thin wood if fine detail shapes are required. They scrape the wood not slice it as do traditional tools. Traditional tools require more skill but are more satisfying to use when you've aquired the skill. I hope that helps.
Very informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
A very nice little project thank you for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work 👍🏽 😃 What’s that spray you were spraying in the last section of the video? Thanks
Thanks Chestnut spray cellulose sanding sealer and Chestnut spray cellulose melamine lacquer.
Great video,do you still have the charnwood? Which do you think is best the Axminster or the Charnwood? Thanks 😊
Axminster I think is the better of the two. It has a more reliable drive and a threaded output drive shaft at the rear. It's also quiet and has two revolving centres. Delivery is good too.
I returned the charnwood ithad a. faulty drive.
Oh I forgot, I think the Axminster has a 3 year guarantee.
Very informative.
Glad you think so!
Great idea.
Thanks! Much appreciated.
Thank you. Very informative.
You are welcome!
Love your videos, thanks for your interesting insights,am soon going to get the Axminster 205 like yours,I hope it will serves my needs well..
Glad to help. Happy turning.
Great video, your enthusiasm is contagious. Keep making more please 🤩
Thankyou. There's lots to do yet, so I hope I can improve each time.
Great information, as always.
I'll keep trying thanks
Thanks for your years of knowledge 😊
Thanks, I hope I can help.
Great tutorial! Thanks!
Thankyou
Nice job, what’s the T shape size of the tool your using to tighten the chuck?
Hard to say as there's no documented definition, each chuck is supplied with its own chuck key when you buy it.
Great information and explained really well. I watched your review of the Axminster 205 and bought one and it’s really quiet and your videos have given me a bit more confidence. Thanks Derek
Its a pleasure
