Nice review, man. Just ordered myself one after a buddy recommended it to me. Been looking for small fixed blade to EDC for a while now. Super stoked for it to come in.
Nice
180cad is a lot for this. I wish they had a no-stone version! but not bad.
Sure hope they offer a led flashlight tool. Also hope to see some small shops offer tools/ blades for this system.
Me too a small light add on would be a cool addition. I do think other companies and shops like Etsy can offer some nice add ons. After all look what they've done for the tool modding community. I'm going that same drive for innovation comes to the Flex.
I love the VE18 series! I have the Small (which is the subject of your review) and the Regular sizes.
Nice review. I looked at this, but decided to go with the LeverGear Edge XT.
Love the Raccoon. I much prefer the Top Liner Lock version.
Great knife. I have eye on it.
Those brushes and diamond sharpener file would be great for upkeep of the Victorinox in my main pocket. 😂 The protractor and comb might be nice to have as well as extras but that's about all I would go for.
also you're doing fine, I didn't realize you just started doing this, you have a good narration voice that's not monotone. you don't waste time - you're on the right track, I can tell you've definitely watched a lot of these types of videos like I have lol good luck
I'm interested because of the comb but I don't know about getting oil in my hair lol
I don't think it's going to be an issue 😉
@@DavidB-MTO lol my hair is long as hell now, this pic is old lmao
Great tool but agree 100 percent - pocket clip is the weakest part on this. Def needs to be slightly longer and not taper.
Thank you for the video and the support! We truly appreciate it! ☺
Our pleasure!
D2 is a tool steel. It has a moderate hardness, good edge retention, and is good at resisting corrosion. Most Chinese companies used to use 18crMOV which is trash
D2 is definitely a better choice. It's a good steel and people should be happy with its performance.
8cr13mov
Excellent review! Thanks, David Martin Jacobsen
Wish they would print the grit numbers on the rods themselves
Same here, having to remember what something is based on color is strange.
Like the idea...but I think the look of it is terrible.
День добрый Дэвид. Сделайте обзоры у себя по камням как искусственным так и натуральным было бы интересно посмотреть.
Helpful demonstration of the system. Thanks!
On a basic level this this is a good video, but I like how deep it gets referring to tools as “a piece of art”.
Are we saying we need a video to flush this out? I know people on RUclips don't necessarily read my reviews on the site. I have elaborated on this subject a few times.
Hello. Wire cutters in my "Sailor Pro" are replaceable. I was quite surprised. Great reviev btw.
I went to Lowe's and bought 1/4-20 x 3/4 in flat phillips machine screws to replace the hexagon shaped screws that you needed the allenwrench to tighten the screws. Now all I need to tighten the clamp is a phillips screw driver.
Is there an adapter that can be used to sharpen scissors?
Not for the system, and TSProf adapters to make that possible would cost twice as much as the Xarilk
Fantastic review. Much appreciated. How would you compare this to the Xarilk Gen3 that you recently reviewed? The system you show (the version without the pedestal stand and included stones) is selling for about $234, while the Xarilk can be had for as low as $79 right now. Do you think this system is worth 3 times the price? For reference, I'm a complete rookie and don't own any crazy high quality knives. Mostly chef style knives under 60 HRC and angles between 8° and 20°. I'm doing basic home cooking. Just looking for a decent sharpening system and was going to get the Xarilk Gen3, but wondering if this unit would be worth the extra price or just overkill for what I need.
If your just doing a few kitchen knives here and there I would get the Gen 3. If your looking at keeping your entire knife collection sharp then the KosiM. The Gen 3 isn't suited for pocket knives but it can be done. The flexibility of the KosiM allows it to sharpen a lot more than the Gen3. They're in two different categories, but it's hard to ignore the price between them.
@@DavidB-MTOthanks for the great info. I have no pocket knives, hunting knives or anything like that. Everything is kitchen knives. Paring/utility knives, steak knives, santokus and chefs knives. Ordered the Gen3 today. 👍
@@clintonmccool2330 if you want to pick up that Gen3 you can use this link: amzn.to/3AnDaxf and a 10% off discount code: 10KF85LZ
You need a microbevel on the apex around 2 degrees higher than the edge. So if your edge is 20 deg. use a ceramic honing rod on it at 22 deg. Amazon sells ceramic honing rods with plastic guides to help you get the angle you want. I just got one and it works great to get that next level of sharpness you (and I prior) didn't know we were missing. I guess you could try using your highest grit stone at 22 degrees (or sharpen at 18 and microbevel at 20 if you want). But you have to use a feather light touch. Good luck!
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try. I've got a ceramic rod that came with my Edge Pro along with some other stuff I have.
Do you think this unit would be capable of sharpening a chef knife with a recurved style blade? For reference, I'm specifically referring to a knife like the Dalstrong Gladiator Series 7-inch Barong. (I'd leave a link, but RUclips won't allow it.) Thanks for a great video!
At first I read this as convexed lol My poor brain is tired. I looked up your knife, I do believe this would work. The stones are only an inch wide and your recurve is gentle enough that the stone edges shouldn't have issues following the arc of the edge.
@@DavidB-MTOthanks for the reply and your expertise! I'll be purchasing this unit shortly... 👍
Good demo! It’s surprisingly similar to my Kadet Pro that cost 6x more. A wrap of kapton tape will firm up the grip of the clamps without the wiggle of rubber. What size are the clamp screws? A knurled or T-handle wrench should provide enough torque to adequately tighten the clamps. What is the diameter of the rod? Curious if other stone holders (like Hapstone) will fit to allow two-sided flat ended stones like Venev. Thanks!
Yeah it's very similar, I would say a copy of it. I will look into the kapton tape. I don't know any sizes, I don't have any calipers to check but I'm sure I can get info from Xarilk. Yes I think a T shaped wrench would work better. The clamps from my pioneer fit the Xarilk so it would be whatever size those are. I will say the rods on the Xarilk sharpeners are no where near as nice as others. No polish or anything, I think it hinders the smoothess somewhat.
@@DavidB-MTO sorry, I meant which size hex wrench is needed to tighten the clamp screws? I think I could hear the unpolished rod. Maybe if it’s the same size as a TSPROF or Hapstone rod, it might be worth swapping out.
@@bmwfish@davidB-MTO any update if the rod is able to changed? Are there any clamps you recommend swapping to over these? I’m trying to Frankenstein this into a beast😂
This system punches well above it's price range
Absolutely, it has a lot of features people pay $$$ for.
Mine needs adjustment with all the set screws to keep angel the same when i flipped knife.
WIll the stone holder accept dual sided stones like the Venev Centaur? Thanks
I don't own any dual sided stones, but I would say no. There's no as much clearance between the arm and that brackets that hold the stones like some other brands. It feels like it was made to accept the ones included, but others will fit.
How are the locking mechanisms on the rotation bar and the angle set, compared to the TS Prof?
No where near as good as TSProf, but for the price is serviceable.
@@DavidB-MTO Thanks
Do you know if this unit acepts the TSPROF stones?
Yes it will accept all 6" stones
I like mine
Do you know if this unit accepts the TSPROF clamps?
I think there's enough of a difference that they won't. I'll check it out for you though. My Etsy adapter for the TSProf fits the Xarilk of I modify it slightly and get some different bolts
if it's 2 cm where you fit the clamps in the frame then it should fit very well
holy smokes your right! I'll take a pic tonight. My pioneer clamps with L adapters works perfectly! Very interesting indeed
@@خالدالمالكي-ص1و So any TSPROF Pro or Kadet clamp should work then? Wish I would have taken advantage of the Prime Day price.
@@DavidB-MTOlink to pioneer clamps? This review was awesome but the clamp is probably second most important feature behind the angles being true
This size is great compared to the rest of their models
thumb stud version should be available soon :(:
Dude i think the hot dog hole is unique and its extremely effective. Its too bad all the youtube reviews have been so hard on that one aspect. I think you killed it on this design.
Thanks I really tried to do something a little different. The knife scene is plaqued by the same old same old. Also a new design is in the works and hopefully it works out because it's pretty wild. The lock up may be difficult to get right so we will see@briandunn5861 @@briandunn5861
I suppose the reason for combining a pry tool and a utility knife in the same tool is so that it can be used to open large packages which are both stapled and taped shut. Some other people mentioned that the locking button fell off their older Prybid Utility tool. I hope that won't happen with this updated version. Thanks for the review. MTO is a great forum.
The button issue doesn't seem to be a problem on the new model. I can see how the tool is aimed at being a multipurpose for boxes and large packages. Thanks for supporting us ☺️
As a painter and decorator this is the perfect knife. The utility blade can cut the tips of caulk tubes etc. and the prybar opens my tins of paint .. unreal!😊
I’ve got the same one. I like it
Are they shipping out Flex's to influencers only first?
The pre-orders have been shipping. I got mine months before launch for testing/review
I bought one of these for around US $20 here in Indonesia. I like its size, not too big and not too small. The main blade is very sharp and the scissors cut through not just paper but also cloths, paracords, cardboards, etc. I haven't tested the other tools yet. But overall I'm satisfied with it as far as price and quality are concerned.
I was hoping that I was wrong and that this multi-tool doesn't actually require unlocking to open. At its price I like almost everything else about it. It looks cool, has a solid tool-set, and all outside-opening tools. But every time I pick it up that lock drives me nuts and I put it back in the drawer with the 10 or so other multitools gathering dust. Great review!
Add me
I got mine this week. Haven't had a lot of time with it yet but pretty nice. I bought a bunch of the blades that I thought I would like and the ones I have tried are pretty good.
How much does it weigh when all decked out?
Glad they got one to you guys
Yes sir, glad we could cover this. Appreciate what you do.
It would be a great idea if they were using decent steel for these. Theyre using 2 and 3crmov and the most expensive knife they have is 8cr13mov. Which is fine. But the screw driver being 2cr isnt giid enough to turn a screw without breaking. 3 cr is basically stainless steel used for making pots. Or pot metal. It isnt fit for tools. All the tool should be made of 420hc or 440c. The knife should be made of d2 or 14c28n, same with the saws etc. And then yes. It would be expensive. But it woukd be usable
The Flex is made with 5Cr15Mov, both the blades and components. Similar to 440A. I agree it would be nice for a bump in steel quality. Maybe for the blades they'll give us upgrade options.
Thank you for sharing🎉🙌👍
Very good review. Did you find that moving the clamps to one side to sharpen smaller knives, instead of using an adapter wasn't a good way to go ? I am debating between the TSprof Pioneer and the Hapstone RS. Since you own both , if you could only own one, which would you choose ? (price is not a consideration for me) Thank you in advance.
For smaller knives without an adapter go with the Hapstone RS. The RS can flip the clamps around to be closer in the middle. I'm going to be doing an RS review to show how this is beneficial.
@@DavidB-MTO looking forward to your review.
Shit knife. I had one a year or two ago and the scissor mechanism broke. Just buy a branded knife.
About as reliable as Leatherman.qc is in non existent now
I hope the 1/4 bit holder can take wiha double sided bits 🙏
I want to say no but I could be wrong
Great review - thanks.
Thank you
