Build Your Library vs. Moving Beyond the Page vs. Bookshark (2/2) 7th Grade Curriculum Comparison
Just wondering if you completed section 5 , the last book The Kite Runner. If you have, can you leave a review about it. I saw there was a parental warning for the book in my BF Modern US guide. What are your thoughts?
So my daughter ended up changing into an online class, but I had planned to switch that book out for her for a different one by the same author- A Thousand Splendid Suns. It also has intensive content, but different. It’s a tough call!
Wirh bookshark online, their are history questions imbedded in the systems for students to complete
Thank you for this look through! How long are the language arts units? It looks like MBTP has the student read the novels in their entirety, is that correct? I really like the look of this!
It looks like they are 3-4 weeks each. I am assuming you read the entire novel, but I can’t find the answer anywhere quickly!
To kill a mockingbird is definitely an 8th grade book.
Having used this level what is your thoughts on the lack books writen people living in the country being studyed? Looking at the china books list it is written by Chinese Americans and other Americans. Second questions what are your thoughts on the massive amount of historical fiction vs. non fiction books in the course?
I think it would be improved by having more authors from the countries the books cover. That being said, contextually this level is a HUGE outlier for Bookshark which covers almost exclusively Eurocentric/American history for K-4. So for Bookshark, I think this level is admirable. One could easily switch out other titles of one’s own choosing& I would look to build your library or similar sites for helpful guidance. As for historical fiction, that’s a charlotte mason thing. Older levels supplement with a history text like book- Kingfisher. This level does have the Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere which is non fiction and very imformative. In sum, I think it is imperfect BUT it’s one of the best options on the market for “open and go,” in my opinion.
Hi! I came across your post when researching reviews of Oak Meadows 9th grade writing/LA curriculum vs. Brave Writer. Do you have feedback on which curriculum is easier to follow (as far as lesson plans) and which may be more educational? Thank you!
They are different. I am not familiar with the BW high school level physical curriculum. OM is a comprehensive ELA curriculum whereas BW offers separate literature and writing curriculum- their online classes however are the best out of everything in this response. My oldest daughter took their “semester of classes” and it was amazing. I highly highly recommend. You can mix and match which classes you want. We chose 3 essay writing classes. bravewriter.com/online-classes/semesters The best combo would probably be doing those writing classes with a literature curriculum or class, IMO.
Thank you so much for this unboxing! I have searched everywhere for a full upclose unboxing of their 9-11 curriculum.
Oh good, I’m glad you found it helpful! I wanted to take more time and go deeper, but I was trying to get my son involved and it quickly became a Sonic The Hedgehog overview 😂 I plan to share more in depth as we go! I printed out the 4 day a week relaxed plan and we’ll start Monday!
Thank you! Great review and so helpful!
Oh good!! I’m so glad. 🤗

Thank you! I am about to order this curriculum for my middle two kids, and I was trying to figure out what the notebooking pages were and if I should order a second copy. We used BookShark last year, and I am super impressed with it. But neither curriculum my kids used last year had notebooking pages. Your video has cleared up so much confusion for me!
Oh good, I’m so glad it was helpful!!
24:26 Because you’re supposed to have your kids outside in free play, exploration and building. Education is not all about books, it’s also about play outdoors, real skill building, sports, and observations!
Knit baby clothes are always so precious! Those colors are lovely! I hope you share the finished pieces with us!
Thank you, I plan on it! 🤗
You mention both Beautiful Feet and Bookshark. Are you doing both at the same time?
Yes, my daughter was doing both. However, she is a very prolific reader, so that is why. For example, she read The Grapes of Wrath in less than a day. 😵💫😂
I really love the look of their math curriculum! We've been using Math-U-See as our core with Beast Academy online added in for a fun challenge. I love the way BA's word problems make my kids think out of the box. I don't plan to change it now, but goodness this was tempting. I promised my husband I wouldnt switch us up again after moving over entirely to Memoria Press for all other subjects but math. I'm standing by that for his sake. 😂 But its been an amazing fit and good structure for me. I needed it perhaps more than anyone.
So relatable! 😂 I love the structure of MP too!
❤
That looks wonderful! I love the incorporated books!
Me too! I’m so excited for my girl to start this 😍
Fantastic resources! Thank you for the look inside, you might have just convinced me to make a purchase of my own. Really glad to have your channel, we know how hard it is to find any non Christian resources.
Oh good! He has also apparently written one on Exodus! 😍 Glad to share! 🩵
Is the Science the Geology unit from Sabbath Mood Homeschool? It showed a page briefly mentioning the Florida Keys. I hope you do an update on that course after a while to let us know how the course is. I have it as a possibility for my daughter.
Yes!! I tried showing it more but the Timelapse didn’t show it all 😂 she is loving it and almost done! I just contacted Home science tools about them putting together a supply kit, that would be SO helpful!!
@@ddchomeschool Will you do a course review in depth for the unit? I would love to hear the feedback from you and your daughter's perspective. I bought the H.S. Ecology unit for my daughter this year and it will be her first year trying this curriculum.
Definitely!!
I'm so curious to hear how this goes. Brigham Young would not have come to mind for a science class. How did you decide on this one?
I have heard very good things about their independent study program! Also, my friend who lived rural had her son take several classes with them years ago as they were one of the only online AP providers back then!
i loved this
I’m so glad! Thanks for watching. 🩵
Not sure why RUclips isn’t showing me comments 😢 Here is Celeste’s IG, she has a highlight saved called “Logbook”: instagram.com/celeste_cruz?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA==
Did you read ALL those books in three days??? Is this several children/levels?
We didn’t read the books cover to cover- my 5th grader read a chapter each from several, my 2nd grader read from Coursge of Sarah Noble, I read chapters from Paddington & Egypt, and I read the entire picture books. These are books from Memoria Press, The CMEC, Bookshark, Brave Writer & PJ Library. An eclectic mix! I wrote a more specific response about who read what here, if you are interested! instagram.com/reel/C-d8NuSS8zw/?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA==
@@ddchomeschool Thank you! Absolutely loved the variety. Great job 👍
Sometimes I literally am just pulling random books from different programs 😂 for example, we started Sadako & The Great Wave (bookshark eastern hemisphere) after the July Tea Time Together artist included The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai because I saw that a copy of the print was in a local exhibition on Japanese prints, and then we got to go see it!! 😭😍 🌊
Have you seen Waldorfish Geometry Math? My daughter took their self-paced 6th-8th grade math and loved it. She did beautiful geometric drawings incorporating art and geometry. I wish they had High School because I would still use it for her. The courses are 5th-8th grade.
@@pacificnorthwestgirl2725 yes!!! But $$$ 😂 I definitely would if we had the budget. Maybe if we get into another charter!!?
Pepper and Pine has great resources regarding geometry and Waldorf method! ❤
Thank you!! I need to watch more of her videos, she’s amazing!! 😍
Love your review! Very helpful!!
Oh I am so glad! 🫶🏻
Uk here. This is not the text book. This is made as a study summary for revision purposes
TFS! Do you have a link to the textbook? It is challenging to find these materials in the U.S.! I ended up having to order one of the books directly from the publisher.
There isn’t a specific textbook in this range. The UK follows a national curriculum which specifies what must be learnt at Key Stage 3. From what I remember of studying German at that age is that it’s mostly teacher led and then you usually have a book with conversations and articles to read aloud in class together. CGP make revision books for students to use at home to solidify what they have already covered in class. Home schooling is not very common in the UK so there aren’t many textbooks for that purpose at this age. GCSE is the next age group and there are tons of resources for that as we have official exams. Hope that helps
Very helpful, thank you so much for sharing!!
There is lots of families who home educate in the UK Foundation stage is age 4/5 Key stage 1 = school year 1 (age 5/6) year 2 (age 6/7) Key stage 2 = school years 3 (age 7/8) year 4 (age 8/9) year 5 (age 9/10) year 6 (age 10/11) Secondary / High School Key stage 3 = year 7 (age 11/12) year 8 (age 12/13) year 9 (12/14) Key stage 4 (I/GCSE exam years) = year 10 (age 14/15) year 11 (age 15/16 - exams taken) End of compulsory school education Sixth form/further education Key Stage 5 (IB/A Levels/Btecs)= year 12 (16/17) year 13 (17/18yrs) University from 18yrs Obviously home educated children can sit their exams spread out over their high school years rather than all in year 11 (end of key stage 4) I’d be interested to know the equivalent in the US system. I HE my son, we are using the books in this video to supplement German studies Hth
Thanks for sharing. Do they not use phonics? She’s not sounding out the words she’s getting stuck on
They do. Very well. We struggled with the pace of FSR (too fast for her) so that the phonics weren’t really engrained until after this lesson. It’s a very solid phonics based program!
Love what you do! Thank you!
Thank you for watching! 🩵
I always appreciate a Trader Joe’s Haul. Thanks for sharing your goodies. 🌻
Thank you for watching! 🩵
Hi there! Great review but I was waiting to see the inside of the student workbook! Is it colorful? Interested in purchasing 7-9 for my almost 9 year old. Thanks!
The workbook is just all of the black and white worksheets in one place. You use the instructor guide to know which manipulatives and books to use, then the worksheet is utilizing that lesson. Does that make sense? It’s kind of a different set up than other curriculums. (I highly recommend downloading the sample so you can get a feel for the richness!)
Does this program work well with struggling readers?
I think you could easily make everything read aloud and oral questions versus written. There are different worksheet options for each activity, which could also work well!
Moving beyond the page math: are you only doing certain topics for math, for example geometry and fractions?
No, we are doing the full thing. We just finished 7-9 completely, and are now into 8-10. However, I do skip ahead to different levels as necessary for particular topics. So when we did the 7-9 fractions, I could see that my son was ready for more challenging work so I incorporated fractions from 8-10. I hope that makes sense!
How did you get the grammar school latin? I can't find it on the website.
charter.memoriapress.com/latin/
@@ddchomeschool thanks!
You’re welcome! 🩵
Thank you .
Welcome 😊
I decided to go with MBTP 5-7 for LA, SS and science! I’m still doing our own parts of LA though like reading and spelling. I really hope it’s feasible. ❤
Yay! Unsolicited advice: I would try one thing at a time rather than everything at once. It’s much less overwhelming that way. You’ve got this! 🫶🏻
@@ddchomeschool thanks 😊 we’ve been doing reading math and handwriting for a bit now so this will be icing on the cake for us. I’ve already learned to take it day by day.
I’m here to ask you for a follow up since this was a year ago! Did you end up using story time treasures? If so how did it go? My 5.5 year old can read pretty well but I love how memoria press really digs deeper into those books. He’s a huge frog and toad fan. I have spelling reading, handwriting and math covered but struggle with what to use for content. I keep going back and forth with memoria press and moving beyond the page.
Yes, we did! Long story short, I think it’s a much better fit for second grade and I wish I had realized that sooner. While she did eventually catch up with the reading level by the end of first grade, she did not have the stamina or fine motor skill (lots of writing) to do the curriculum. I wish I had known all of this in advance because I definitely would have saved it! I think it could work better for a precocious reader, and you could perhaps ask all of the questions orally! Hope this helps! 🙃
When you say ‘You can’t do Bookshark ontop of everything else,’ what is the else? I wasn’t sure what you meant, and also when you said it needs to stand alone. We haven’t done F yet, but when we do, we’ll also need to do Bookshark sci F, Bookshark la F, grammar on top and math. But that would be typically for everyone, so I am just wondering what others things you added that made it feel too much or what you’ll take away to do it next year. How long was it taking to do F please? It’s a level we are excited about, and the notebooking in the this is unique, but I am wondering how much time this all takes. Thanks so much,
On top of complete Memoria press, Waldorf, and the CMEC. For history & literature. We’re totally able to do it with grammar and science, etc. I meant it’s best to just do it only and not try to add entire programs on top of it 😂 Does that make sense? I’ll link to my 5th and 2nd grade picks so I don’t confuse anyone else with the complete lack of context lol
@@ddchomeschool ah I see, that makes total sense. New subscriber here,…..wasn’t sure of what other curriculum you use. I’ll look for those other videos, :)
No worries! I realized towards the end of this that an intro would’ve been helpful! 😂
Lovely, we are just diving into Sabbath Mood High School (we've done form 2 & 3) and starting with Biology
So far we are loving it!!
My son is gifted so I thought he had to graduate early. I decided this year to allow him to take his time and just take one dual enrollment course a semester. I feel so much less stressed and he does as well.
Thank you for sharing! 🩵🩵
So the realms of gold readers are not available for a free DL. I wish it was. I may purchase them. I have used many of their units, even some of the classic study guides. I like them a ton. Do they plan on tackling High school curriculum as well?
Ugh, that sucks!!! I do not know, but I will try to find out and let you know!
Do you know if the 2nd grade MP charter manual contains recitations that coordinate to Introduction to Grammar School Latin? I was hoping to buy just the recitations for 2nd grade, but it doesn't look like that's available on the charter site.
I believe so- I purchased the streaming lessons for intro GSL on the charter site & it has the vocab and recitations for each lesson!
@@ddchomeschool I purchased the streaming audio for IGSL but it only has the pronunciations and vocab for each lesson. Maybe I'm missing something.
Lesson 1 doesn’t have a saying, lesson 2 does. Do you have it there? First half of the pledge of allegiance! 🇺🇸
@@ddchomeschool I think we are thinking of different things. I'm wondering about the weekly recitations that are typically included in the back of the curriculum manuals. Or you can buy them separately by grade on MP. They cover all kinds of info from the various subjects taught. Like the 5th grade recitations would cover Geography 1, Insects, Famous Men of Rome, etc
Oh yes, it contains weekly recitations, but not in Latin. 😂
Hello again 😊 I was thinking of using math with confidence this year but now I’m not sure… this looks great too! Have you looked over both by any chance, what were your thoughts if so? I have a child who gets bored easily and struggles with math.. I do like that this one seems to vary from parent led hands on to computer to paper…in your opinion do you think this would be engaging for her ?
I am not familiar with that curriculum, so I have no basis for comparison. However, we have tried Saxon, Singapore, Spectrum, and others. This is the only curriculum that both my kids and I can get excited about and it’s very effective. Both of my kids are testing in the 94th+ percentile for math!
@@ddchomeschool thank you for the feedback. Would you say it’s well laid out for a parent who is not great at math?
@@benaturalbefree630yes! Which age group are you looking at? I’ll be happy to make a video walking you through a lesson. I think that might be the most helpful! 🩵
@@ddchomeschool 7-9 I think I just watched that one from you actually 🙂but just wanted to get an idea on the parents Manuel, the samples are great and I am like love them. Thank you for these videos, I’ve been binge watching ☺️
You are so welcome! Still thinking about what to film for you, FYI. 🩵
Have you ever heard of Exploring the World Through Story? It seems like that would be right up your alley. 🙂
I have not, that sounds super interesting! Thanks for sharing. 💚
This was really helpful to me. I appreciate and will use the the items you added in (Takei book, documentary, Bill of Rights summary). Thanks for the great video! I subscribed!
I’m so glad you found it helpful, thank you for subscribing! 🩵
Does MP have anything that would be considered work samples for a charter? I'm really wanting to try MP for my kinder but my charter requires work samples for science and social studies in kinder 😩
It does not. However, I would either have her draw and write something about the book we had read or I’d print a worksheet from education.com on the same or a similar topic. Plan B would be to do studies weeklies for the samples & spend the rest of your time on MP. I’ve also ordered the little social studies and science workbooks for K to use for samples.
@@ddchomeschool Thank you! We did the "180 days of" books for work samples for TK, so maybe I could just do that again. I was planning to do MBtP 5-7, but after looking at the samples, I think it is too advanced for K even if our IST says it is fine 😩
Yep! Those are the ones we had! LOL. Definitely look at MBTP 4-5 for math- remember MBTP started out as a curriculum for gifted students so the content is advanced/more challenging than typical.
I’m semi new to homeschooling and entirely new to MP. Is there a way to save when purchasing their curriculum? Also, what are you using as reference for “standards”
The charter we were with follows the California state standards, which are basically only US history until 6th grade, and the science standards are very specific as well. I don’t follow standards per se because I feel qualified to evaluate developmental appropriateness, level of engagement, and intellectual development- these things are going to vary by student. I think of standards as helpful if you’re not sure where to start, but they’re just a random set of topics that bureaucrats have deemed most important, they’re not necessarily inherently to be preferred. If that makes sense?
@@ddchomeschoolit does and that’s the ideology I have followed, but you mentioned it in your post and it piqued my interest!
We’ve been in a charter several times over the years and they require work samples that follow these standards- so my 4th grader had to do studies weeklies for fourth grade history for them even though I would’ve preferred to not do those. 😂 I guess the silver lining is that it’s not necessarily a bad thing to learn those things in addition!
I Appreciate this! I agree it looks very comprehensive.
@@malvarez4575 we started it this week, and I’m in LOVE! It is so good!!! 😍
Does Build Your Library come with answer keys? I bought a Lit Bite and asked on the site about an answer key and no one replied. Curious to know bc I need answer keys.
The version I have does not, but I believe that’s because parent will often be reading aloud to their children so they’d know the answer. Bookshark and moving beyond the page do.
Thanks for this! Do you have a list of great books to read like you stated in your video? I know Memoria Press has a great literature, I did not see this books you have so I assume they are from Oak Meadow only?
It was originally from the college board, like 20 years ago 😂 here is a similar list! www.fenwick.org/uploaded/Library_Misc/CollegeBoardList.pdf
