I’ve been wanting to make top-down sweaters for a long time, but wanted the freedom to use whatever yarn, hook size, or stitch I wanted, and not have to buy a new pattern every time. Hi need help I brought the pattern but I'm confused about the number of stitches in the starting chain I want to make it in XL is it 148 or 206 or is 148 x2 = 296 ? I'm very new to crochet and already scratching my head 😮 please help 😢

I would like to make this but not sure how many chains I will need. I am a size 18 in the UK so a 40-42 inch bust. Which number of chains will I need please? I am not sure which number to highlight in the list of chains needed in the brackets. Thank you for your help. This looks a fairly easy pattern for me as I have never made a cardigan before.
