You are right, Jen. Most Americans don't know about El Salvador, let alone living there. I can't say that about Canadians, though they know a bit more about Latin America than the average American. I don't know, education, culture? Who knows what the reason is, but honestly, I think that the majority of the states, especially the southern ones, are like they are living in a bubble, oblivious to the world's changes. ( I'm not stereotyping I have family there and I travel every now and then)
