I love hearing Bobby talk about deer hunting. Hunting deer by setting up in their world and travel patterns is the real deal. Just figuring them out by scouting without bulldozers and food plots and enclosed blinds yields the most accomplishment.

The problem with hunting deer in their natural environment is that their natural environment no longer exists many places. Without access to these large undisturbed or natural areas where woodsmanship can kill mature deer a hunter is left with only the option of manipulating a parcel of private. Through manipulation one will have to create these scenarious if he or she wants consistent encounters. On top of that comes the poor age structure with the surrounding pressure.

Each arrow has its place. The light vs heavy when someone is using traditional equipment is completely different than with most compound bow setups now. Whenever you have that ratio of the speed of sound vs speed of arrow giving a whitetail time to react to a shot will leave you with a shot under 30 yards with just about any bow you shoot. Depending on where and what you are hunting would determine what would be a far shot or not. Maybe the beat attribute to a lighter arrow is that it takes a little bit of human error out of the equation with puns and yardage. In the northeast in a high pressured state anything past 25 yards in the woods will give you a much lower percentage shot with more of a chance for an animal to duck an arrow much farther than that.

Illinois is the best state for advancing bucks if that's your goal especially with a smaller property. 3 day late Nov gun season, 4 day Dec season is the reason. KS an Ohio, don't matter if you have 80 or 100, if someone nearby has corn out on 5 acres they have very similar odds as you. KS OH have good deer, ks is on downhill slide though. The state has more pressure than ever now, with less cover than ever. Add bait + cell cams guys from all over can sit on couch an wait for one. Man, whats hunting come to. But for smaller farms Illinois is the real deal. Even with poor DNR, the short gun season outweighs it. Guns kill more than anything. Hunting over bait don't teach nothing about hunting as Bobby Worthington says in his new book, "Final Quest"

Higher on one side than the other but where the drainage comes off is the low spot in the ridge. I jumped up the biggest ten point I've ever seen personally walking the property right where a holler drainage comes up to the ridge. There's a thicket about 300 feet below the ridge in line with the drainage heading up towards the ridgeline. Would that be considered a funnel it much steeper on the opposite side of the drainage. Would that be considered a funnel? The wind is perfect where I would want put my stand. There's trees for proper wind on both sides of the low spot. I aim to take my Bobby's workshop but any info on how to hunt it would be appreciated. God bless.

When you used 450 for the "light" arrow, you are using an arrow which 20 years ago was considered heavy. I bought the light arrow stuff (350 range) and they were blazingly fast and I lost 5 deer. Never had before with a 450 set up with a little more FOC. There is an effective energy and momentum issue where lighter isn't better and heavier isn't better and I think you helped establish that range for us effectively. I know shoot trad and the higher FOC and heavier arrow is much more important on slow arrows. Also, there is another factor, especially for us trad guys. A heavy arrow on a trad bow hardly makes a sound and it is not alarming to the deer like a compound. Reaction time and reaction response are real, but variable based on the wierdness of the sound in a deer's ear and the jumpiness of the deer. I shoot 23 yards and in, so my slow speeds are not that much off a 40-50 compound for a guy shooting 60-62 on a compound. But the sound to the deer is very different IMHO. I believe your 450-650 range for compound are good places to land based on the length of shot you can ethically take. I believe 525-675 for a trad bow that is super quiet is a killer range for trad. The higher weight, shorter shooting distances, higher foc, and quietness of the shot are all crucial. I thought your penetration test was fair, but again, I don't know how we duplicate a shot on a real animal in real conditions. We can try for extremes, but I prefer to look at ranges and what enables me to shoot ethically, be confident, and then prove it in the field. But your bottom line is mine, too: test your bows and find the best that works at the distances you can ethically shoot, and be confident that you will hit that vital V just inside the crease and top of the heart.
