Aloha! My name is Aprille and I am born and raised on Oahu. It was only when I came back home from college in the mainland that I realized how special and beautiful Hawaii truly is. I started hiking in 2012 and haven't stopped since.
On this channel, you can expect to see my hiking adventures, sharing of adventure tips, and also a peek into Hawaii's unique ecosystem and conservation efforts. While I may not be a conservation expert, I'm simply a Hawaiian native plant and bird enthusiast eager to share my passion with others. I hope you enjoy this channel in being able to experience Hawaii through my lens.
Mahalo for visiting!

UNDERRATED MUST DO in Volcanoes NP: Steam vents & the Sulphur Banks trail | Big Island Hawaii

If you are traveling to volcanoes national park in Hawaii, check out this underrated trail: Sulphur Banks trail. Erik and I were just exploring so at the time we backtracked from the deck overlook instead of completing the loop. ...

On our 2nd day in the big island, we went to go birding at Palila discovery trail, home of some of the rare endangered native species: Naio, Mamane, and the Palila bird. We unfortunately didn't see or hear the Palila, which is disheartening and just proof of how quickly our native forest birds are at the brink of extinction. Hiking the Lake Waiau trail on Mauna Kea | Big Island Hawaii

We ventured to the Big Island and hiked the 3rd highest alpine lake in the U.S.: Lake Waiau on top Mauna Kea. Who would've thought a lake would exist high up on a volcano. Please note this is a very difficult hike! The lake sits at 13,000 ft. high so be weary of AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness). I think we did the harder route since we saw people coming from the other side of the cinder cone. W...

we miss you mrs escapade
How steep is the walk there :)?
Oh it's pretty flat for the most part. I want to say it's easy enough that even someone on wheelchair is doable
Thanks for the helpful tips. We can’t wait to try these hikes!
Nailed it. Great list . 👍

Amazing video. Thank you so much for sharing. It was really helpful. Love it
Your welcome, hope you enjoy your trip!
Great to see Jack in this video!
Awesome hike and camping!!
Thank you for risking your car to show us this beautiful hike! 💚 🌿 I’ve always wanted to do it, but have been put off by the car break-ins 😏
The plant looks like Kūkaenēne (Coprosma). Thanks for the nice video!
Thank you for id’ing it! ❤️
Ok finally found my favorite hiking channel. Love the pace, love the respect you show to the land and its neighbors. You are showing Kuleana for your home, something so many other Hawai’i hiking channels lack. Thank you, I’m inspired!
Aw thank you so much for your kind words 🤙🏻. It’s so easy to find viral things to do on the island these days but people forget to show how to respect and appreciate places in a bit deeper level. Hawaii is special and so I’m glad to share my pov with you all ❤️
Awesome video ! I'm camping at Paliku this weekend for the first time and can' t wait! Is that a Protect and Preserve sticker on the water bottle?
Nice have so much fun! You’re gonna love it. And yes! Do you volunteer with P&P?
@@thehiescapade I do! I grow native plants for Tyrone (and occasionally give talks/ join in on volunteer days). Maybe we'll run into each other sometime. Thanks again for such an informative video!
@@daniellefrohlich1251 Aw nice! Actually I do remember you speaking awhile back (I believe you spoke about what makes a species invasive). Hope to bump into you again at P&P! 😊 Have a fun trip this weekend!
@@thehiescapade Yes- that was me! You have a good memory. :) Full disclosure- my husband accidentally left a message using my account- I didn't go this time, but he had a great trip and it sounds like the weather was perfect. Sounds like it was brutal but totally worth it. I love that you include interesting biology info about Haleakala in addition to useful logistical information- this is well done!
im a local but NOT a hawaii loa resident, how do i go about getting a pass for this hike? thanks!
Waianae high school Natural Resources class of 2012 we would go up and build those fences and clean out invasive plants and trees , good memories up there
@@MrKidslick That’s awesome! Mahalo for you and your peer’s restoration efforts in Ka’ala! 🤙🏻
I grew up lived and went to school there. Honomu is my old stomping grounds. Can't beat the big. Friendly people and so relaxed island.

Please do NOT walk on the reef! You will destroy it! Please take a kayak.
What do you consider freezing?
hehe during that time I want to say it was maybe in the late 50s. It was rainy, pretty windy and just being the bog in the clouds was pretty cold
Thank you so much for posting this video.
Wow arrested for hiking? 🤯🤙
Wow, awesome views, interesting camping after a hike....I've wanted to try mountain camping, after watching this, i can't haul everything up there, I'll stick to the beach parks. Congratulations Happy Anniversary!
Thanks! It’s not too bad to get to the shelter with gear, quite short

It’s hit or miss with hitchhiking. Our crew rents two vehicles and park one vehicle at the lower parking lot and another vehicle at the upper parking lot.
That’s a good option too! We were lucky then
What type of puppy is your puppy?
He’s a Jack Russell and Dachshund breed, he’s a rescue doggy ❤️
Any sketchy parts that was not showed in the video? What is a hike that is comparable in sketchiness or difficulty (aside from distance and elevation)? I've done hikes all around the island, but haven't made my way to the hikes in Waianae yet
Not really, just the 2 boulders I think is the sketchiest. It’s a different type of hike and so it’s hard to compare to another Hawaii hike. Just know it’s steep. If you’ve done most hikes around the island specifically long ridge ones, you should be ok
@@thehiescapade I appreciate the info! The only "long" ones I've done are kuliouou and wiliwilinui. The hardest incline I've done was olomana to the first. Haven't done any trails to KST though
@@NormalPersonActivities I see. It’s much longer than Kuliouou and Wiliwilinui since Ka’ala can take 6-8 hours total. Olomana to the first peak is like an hour of steepness and so that can be similar to the beginning of Ka’ala after you finish the paved road and work your way up to 3 poles
@@thehiescapadeAwesome. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
Hi you guys! Did you park your car at the trailhead overnight or were you dropped off?
Hii! We just parked along the street and left our car overnight
0:57 is for @tsol006
Is it about 10 minutes from the helipad to the shelter?
It’s about 15 minutes ish. There are 2 dips between the helipad and shelter
Lanikai pillboxes isn't that easy. It's short and steep. The first part is steep and slippery from all the dry lose dirt and it's hot af if you do it after 9 am and before sunset.
good job showing are hawaiian secret spots to haoles
Amazing vlog and great details! Thanks for sharing! Great job on getting that stuffed doll!! 😂
Thanks! I was so surprised I got it haha
Fun fun🎉🎉. Im sitting in apa right now watching this😂

My fav east side state trail
Aloha! Love your videos, insights and knowledge-sharing. I watched your backpacking adventure at Haleakala and your preparation. Ours was postponed due to the devastating fire but I would like to do that eventually. Can you please let me know of trails here in O’ahu to solo backpack so I can prepare and test my gears as well. Thank you.
Aw thank you for your kind words! I hope you get to camp Haleakala soon it’s definitely something to experience. Not much backpacking trails in Oahu since there is not really accesible paths unless you want to just camp along the Ko’olau summit trail but even that isn’t like a designated trail for backpacking. We camped along Manana ridge but only short kine to the shelter, I have that video coming up in the next few weeks. Manana ridge or maybe Aiea ridge are good to go camp along and pretty lenghy to do if you wanna test your cardio and strength with it. But I honestly think hiking Haleakaka crater is easier than hiking Oahu’s ridge trails.
@@thehiescapade Mahaloz. See you guys on the trail.
where the apapane at?
They exist here but unfortunately they weren’t along the trail. I’ve seen a bunch when my friends and I did volunteer work at the designated volunteer sites here earlier this year
Nice!🤙🏽😁
Mahalo Scott!
Lots of paths to the falls. I think pig hunter trails and also the ridge trail which people will want to avoid. But like you said just stay close to the stream and the pink ribbons, and you can’t go wrong.
Thanks Will! yep, very easy to get lost
What? Lilikoi is evasive? Where is it from then?
lol you would think it’s from here right since it’s tropical looking. It’s origin is from Brazil and South America
@@thehiescapade I did not know that. Thanks for sharing.
Thumbs up because of a brief appearance from Hina
Great video Aprille! Papali is way better than Hau'ula. Its always been called Ma'akua Ridge-Papali Loop trail, its good clarification since mostly everyone knows it by Papali Ridge.
Ohh I totally didn’t know that since we always called it Papali ridge lol. Thanks Troy
How long did it take you guys to do the whole loop? Im going in 2 days!
Hii! It took us about 6 hours. It can probably be done faster since we stopped to take pictures/video lol. Have fun! Definitely something to do when in Oregon
Nice work, I subscribed
This helped me plan my own Yoho trip, especially the bucket list at the end. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I agree
We tried it, rough weather, rain squalls, extremely hairy climb. Got 2/3 up and turned around. Once you get up on the face of the mountain, it is gnarly! There is another route to the top from Waialua.
Sorry to hear, I hope you're able to get to still do it one day! Way better when it's drier conditions but be sure to bring lots of water especially in this summer heat if you plan on doing it soon. Yes the Waialua route you'll need special access since it's going through private property and also the trail isn't well maintained. My friends and I did it awhile back and it was an all day thing, I'd rate this route difficult though since there's not really a trail and it's super lengthy.
Is there anywhere safer to park near by?
Unfortunately not really. You can try parking on the residential street just outside the street going in the valley, but that is a pretty long walk. And also Waianae can be sketchy. In the valley there is no signal so best bet is if you can have someone drop you off/pick you up when you start/end the hike. You can park your car by the trailhead but you'll take your chances.
Thanks so much for sharing!
thank you! hope you enjoy the trail and stay safe!
I live on Kaua’i now. This was my first waterfall swim about 40 years ago. Thanks for a wonderful memory.
Is raining in June normal in Oahu?
Rain is pretty normal on Oahu in general, especially on the northern shore. Typically it rains frequently during the winter season and is very sunny during the summer, however compared to previous summers, this year has seen much more rain.
@@rileyange so it rains in the summer and winter now due to the climate change?
@@minc4970 it always rains, that’s just apart of Hawaii! However, it usually comes in short spurts and feels light and refreshing. It rarely pours rain all day, especially during the summer. Certain parts of the island see more rain compared to others, but I don’t know if I would contribute this summer’s rain to climate change necessarily. We are currently in an El Nino period, meaning the islands should be experiencing more intense dry spells and storms. However, this summer has been pretty docile so far, so perhaps you are right in assuming climate change is affecting Oahu’s weather- just in a positive way this time lol! But in general, the weather here is just hard to predict due to the various, constantly changing, conditions surrounding the island.
Hey Min, agreed with @rileyange - the rain can occur any time. Around December through March is our winter season known for a wetter and colder conditions (nothing like mainland cool temps though lol).
Really been enjoying your videos ! I have a deep respect for anyone involved with conservation work. I still remember my kumu from elementary school reminding us every time we saw her that it is out kuleana to mālama i ka ‘āina. The views on this loop look killa, I gotta add it to da list. Mahalo for sharing, aloha from Puna :)
Mahalo piha!
Can't wait for part 2
Why are all these trails in neighborhoods? Need parking lots
Yeah it's sad the state doesn't really give much funding toward trail recreation and just to the conversation world.
