388 - Dr. Thao Ha - Making Sense of the Divisive 2024 Election
Join Dr. Thao Ha-a sociology professor with a backstory of survival and resilience. In this episode of The Vietnamese podcast, Kenneth Nguyen hosts Dr. Thao Ha as they discuss the outcomes of the 2024 presidential election, exploring why “the Dems didn't see the other side coming so strong” and how we can bridge divides in the aftermath.
Dr. Ha’s story offers her perspective on social issues and the urgent need for understanding each other. It’s not everyday a sociology teacher can talk about street gangs from first-hand experience. When she talks about the social consequences of gangs, she can point to the scar on her arm. She was shot in a gang-related drive-by shooting as she was comin...

    Hi anh Kenneth, as a Vietnamese living in Vietnam, specifically in Saigon. I just want to say that I learnt a lot from these podcasts, a lot of young people in Vietnam nowadays are getting more exposure to international content and understand much more about democracy or other kind of constitution and philosophy than their parents. However the way we study in school and the way the society is in Vietnam prevent us to have debates, think critically, and make voices to things that matter to us just like Confucious philosophy, you just do not speak up to those above you. When I was in college, I had to learn a lot about Marx and Engels ideology, and nobody else's and the funny thing is that our economy is considered as a free economy by the US, which is the complete opposite of their philosophy. Do we have thinkers nowadays? we probably do, but whenever there are some opinions, they either go to jail or being teared apart by the communist thinkers. That's why many young people are seeking their ways out of the country, including me.

    Most Vietnamese here in the US are still not considered as "rich", including myself. I am a middle class who still is depending on the affordable care for my family. And i know many Vietnamese who are voting for Trump also using Obama care. So how can you bite the hand that feed you? Trump, for years has tried to terminate this Healthcare. Let's not pretending that trump's policies will be better than the others. Let's not pretending that we are an expert in politics. I have been here seen 1978 and have voted for both parties. There is no perfect president. But with this latest election, I put aside all the things about policy. I believed this is a Moral and Characters election. For every Vietnamese who's supporting Trump, would you be comfortable to have a convicted felon as your neighbor?, let alone being the president of the United States. Some helpful answers to how to interact and understand MAGA acquaintances can be found in Stephan J. Ducat's book “Hatreds We Love: The Psychology of Political Tribalism in Post-Truth America" It doesn't really address the historical experience of Vietnamese escapees from communism. But it does provide an explanation of those U.S. born MAGA folks' psychology. From an interview with Ducat: "While the psychology of MAGA conservatives can’t be turned off, it may be possible to redirect it to different ends. In the book's final chapter, I show how bridges might be built between the moral intuitions of conservatives (purity, loyalty and sanctity) and those of liberals (fairness, equity and care). If those on the Left can present their concerns in the moral metaphors of the Right, addressing conditions that affect us all, like the rapidly worsening climate emergency, may be possible." I really think you'll find this book helpful in addressing some of the issues discussed in your podcast.

  • @ebylib
    @ebylib 6 дней назад

    Sorry for overloading your comments, but the podcast is pretty long, and you cover lots of issues. Ducat on MAGA masculinity: "One iteration of this authoritarian state of mind is something we could call fascist masculinity. For men, dominating, subduing, and banishing the aspects of oneself construed as feminine, such as empathy, tenderness, compassion, and caretaking, is perfectly congruent with the subjugation of women in the world. If those traits are devalued in oneself, it only makes sense to devalue those who seem to be the “natural” embodiment of such qualities. The notion of manhood as dominant, hard, straight, high status, and purged of tender “feminine” traits is what researchers label “hegemonic.” It is held by women and men and is more predictive of support for Trump than partisan identity, sex, race, or education. It is also highly associated with racism, homophobia, sexism, and anti-immigrant attitudes. This species of masculinity has long been a feature of fascist identity, from Mussolini’s army of thugs to the proto-Nazi soldiers of Weimar Germany who would go on to serve Hitler. As we can all observe, it is now a central feature of the men who comprise the MAGA manosphere and the trad wives who revere them."

So much disinformations and it started with the top 2 most well known figures in Vietnam (HCM should be #1 on that 6 names list) Can't believe he tried to shame Vietnam for gotten invaded by the French. HCM tried different approaches with the French and later the Americans to prevent bloodshed but didn't work. Phan boi Chau and his ideas didn't work because the the Japanese and the French were on the same team (invaders) HCM was invited to join PBC movement but wisely declined because he knew what was going to happen. The only way to gain independence and I mean true independence (not like the Japanese, Korean, Philippines..) is to fight for it and the West didn't consider any alternatives. Stop with your 75 years propaganda the West is superior and the east is at faults and stupid. World history is way longer than the last 100 years and it's still being written. @45:00 - So agree-- important to always be testing our own biases and talking to people we care about regardless of their politics. Besides, politics usually is such a minor contributor to who people are as an individual. And: I voted Trump. Ultimately it came down to a better likelihood that he would end our involvement in foreign wars. Kamala was asked on Breakfast Club whether she would continue to fund wars or finally take care of people at home. The caller also said that her answer would determine who she'd vote for. Kamala said "we can do both", i.e. continue funding foreign wars while helping people domestically. I didn't believe her. Although Trump says mean things, his words don't kill like our bombs kill innocent people. I also didn't appreciate that encounters on our southern border soared as soon as Biden entered office. A country should have secure borders. It's not racist, which shouldn't even need to be mentioned. I also lost basically all my trust for Dems after COVID and BLM. It went from "you're a bad person and you'll kill grandma if you go outside" to "it's OK to riot (no, they're not - they're peaceful protests) because of systemic racism, nevermind about grandma and COVID". The Dem messaging contributed greatly to my depression for the 14 months that I isolated so that I could try to "stop the spread". I'll never again care so much about such things that I have little to no control.

Why did 10 years old kids go home crying after Clinton’s loss? Teachers can vote whoever they want. During BLM, kids go home “educated” their parents about racism. You might never live under the evil regime so you can't understand it. I have an analogy that might help you guys understand why your parents voting for Republicans. Let say you have a very annoying neighbor who would take any opportunity to report you to police even though you do nothing wrong. What are you gonna do? Moving out is one of the options. You have a chance to move different neighbor. In the new neighborhood, you find out that there is another annoying neighbor who has the potential to cause harm to your family. Assuming in the new neighborhood, you have more freedom to protect yourself. You would stand up to for yourself to eliminate all potential harmful that would cause you troubles right? You know that you don't like that kind of annoying neighbor and can't live with it. You can't be friend with that person frankly. Democrats are leaning towards communism and socialism. Your parents are wise enough not to stand with them. One more thing, no matter who you are, please don't forget your root and why you end up here in the US.

      your root is being a citizen of a puppet regime that so corrupt that the CIA supported the overthrown and assassination of the president? dont even talk about the communism vs capitalism, one side have millions of foreign troops fighting in the land of vietnam and bombed and used chemical-warfare(agent orange) on the vietnamese people, i cant find any history of millions chinese troops fighting, bombing and killing vietnamese for the north. the beautiful thing is that your children is gonna grow up and know the truth and just like the new gen-z american vietnamese children they gonna come back to vietnam, see the grow and gonna help the country grow, unlike the losers that always rooting for their own country to lose and be de-stablize just because they dont like the regime in charge.

      "Democrats are leaning towards communism and socialism." what kind of experience do you have? - Trump had started the connection with Communist Russia or Soviet Union since 1987. After the trip to Moscow in 1/1987, Trump posted a 1 page ad on 3 big newspapers, with 2 main points (1) US should not support European Countries financially to protect them from the Communist (2) US should normalize with Soviet Union stop the cold war. Upto 2016 and upto now point 1 and 2 are still the same with Trump and he has never ever talked negatively about Putin or Russia. - is Trump a strongly anti-communist president ? Trump has business in the Communist countries China and Vietnam, and the Communist to Fascist Russia.

      Just like you've never experienced life in a European country like Denmark or the Netherlands where there is far less crime and poverty. Blaming it on "socialism" instead of the authoritarianism that persecuted people in Vietnam (and other authoritarian countries) is dishonest.

    • @daltonphan8709
      @daltonphan8709 5 дней назад

      @ebylib there are 2 different socialism systems, democratic socialism and socialism. The former one is the one Nordic countries using. The later one is interchangeable with communism. Nordic countries are relative small and easier to control. I am skeptical if democratic socialism applies to US since it is big and diverse. Democratic socialism is a good model and no argue about it. The one I mentioned in original response is dangerous one. It is central power government we should never be heading to that route. What I see happening in the US is democrats leaning towards it and it is no no to me since I lived under the communism. About 100 years ago, Vietnamese were so naive to embrace the communism and we see the result nowadays. What i see today the young people are brainwashed with socialism. That is naive isn't it? Be careful with leaders who always paint a beautiful picture but really evil behind.

      Thanks for listening. Is it suicidal empathy to speak to Trump supporters to learn more and find common ground? And can you share what parts of the conversation led you to define us as idealists?

    Great convo. I used to be democratic and it really does blow my mind how much the party lost contract with every day people. I knew it would be a landlide once Elom, Tulsi and RFK left the party. The demo party isnt the same. They just shifted too much now that you guys even considered Joe Rogan a "right wing person "now . No he's been the same like all of us. The one side changed.

      Rogan apparently liked Bernie Sanders - who's about as far from right-wing as you can be in America.

      I’m still debating if Rogan switched teams because of ideological change or he switched lanes for viewership. I think it’s leaning more for the view count.

    Obama had a chance to bring us all together as a black President, But he divided us. He deported the most people, He was a war machine, and he spied on the people and press.And assassinated a American overseas. I would't even go into the madness of Benghazi and all the lies... Think about it Trump took a bullet or all of us...
