    This is a pretty good case study given that the financial woes may have been kickstarted by the GFC. And that the A-league will likely be entering a probably woorse financial environment from next season. I think the A-league's franchise model is at most risk due a poor economic climate and there's a lot of lessons that cann be learned from Fury's demise to navigate the challenges that A-league clubs will face in the next 3 years. If there's something that you could clarify, you are welcome to correct me in a reply.

    Mate, tell me you've fudged the dates?! I can't believe it's been 13 years since their exit, that's scary. It was some real astute business handing a franchise to a city of 170k with its main employers being the defence force and mining. Possibly the Two worst trades to bank on people being able to attend games on the regular. On the upside it's just ahh, you know...a short hop, skip and a jump up north to Cairns. A city of 130k and just short of a commute of 80...I mean, an 800km round trip for any fans that could maybe help keep the team financially viable. Legitimate genius move by Ben Buckley and the team at HQ, ever the optimists when it had a 99% chance of failure the minute it applied through to inception hour. On one hand, we've got the powers that be doing this sorta stuff but what's the alternative? People that think A-leg won't flourish until a 2nd division is introduced with a promotion/relegation system. There's no game, no mere mortal nor devine mystical power that could be a success with either of the above two Mensa clubs calling the shots.

    • @harrykatsaros
      @harrykatsaros 12 дней назад

      Netball is a round ball. Also, the sport has had ridiculous money pumped into it and always had an advantage in a country that was built on immigration. Yet still it has never really taken off. When Soccer Australia did their big reset and the A-League was launched almost 20 years ago now there was huge fanfare about what the league could be. We had crowds of 40-50K at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne for a number of games. But despite that initial enthusiasm, in the end the code’s popularity never went to the next level. Instead the novelty was short lived and now the league is hanging by a string.

    So infuriating how AFL has constantly shit on soccer, because deep down they know Australia really does love soccer way more than AFL. Its participated in way more, and loved by kids and families more than AFL. Nothing against AFL, but its a unique sport, soccer is international and provides way more unity and rivalry than AFL does. Last night I attended a meaningless pre-Olympic friendly match between Australia and China in Adelaide. It was PACKED, 50,000 people hanging on the edge of their seat watching a throw away game that was largely used for the coaching staff to refine their final 11 for Paris Olympics, the result was irrelevant. That's how powerful the AFL knows soccer really is in this country. And they do everything they can to shut it down, they hate it.

      Completely agree. The key mistake by many AFL fans is that they compare A-league crowds and TV revenue with AFL crowds and revenue and see that as the factors deciding popularity yet this only partially contributes to popularity. AFL has one key professional competition on this planet, while football, depending on how many divisions you want to count, has at least 200, but probably closer to 300. The unfortunate fact is that eurosnobs are a key competitor to the a-league (I would argue possibly more so than the AFL) yet these people that prefer to watch the big 5 leagues of Europe (or even others) are still committed football fans. I hardly know a person that doesn't support a team somewhere in the world. The other factor is participation. You don't have to look hard to see Australian stats: both at junior AND senior levels, football clearly outdoes the AFL in terms of competition registrations, and it's widening. In my view, to say AFL is more popular than football in Australia is complete nonsense. You could only say their premium competition (the AFL) is more popular than the A-league, that's about it.

    • @tommyandrewd
      @tommyandrewd 14 дней назад

      Even Craig Foster and Simon Hill would laugh at this comment. I love both sports but to even throw up the argument that football is more popular than AFL is laughable. The paradox is that a lot of people actually enjoy both sports. 40,000 of the 50,000 there would’ve had an interest/ knowledge of AFL.

    • @MrStuartp
      @MrStuartp 14 дней назад

      @@tommyandrewd more people play soccer than AFL in this country. Numbers don't lie. Its statistically proven to be more popular. Doesn't mean AFL is garbage, or not worthwhile. Its just not an international game so has a unique base of support. The AFL/NRL ratings on TV will always be higher due to the current arrangement with TV and what not. And those with the power to call the shots on this stuff will continue to keep it that way for business reasons. But as far as the actual people who live in this country, who are rarely considered by anyone with power, soccer/football is played significantly more.

    AFL has always thrown hissy fits every time a sport gained popularity - you could do an episode on when Basketball was the number 1 threat also. Its sad they dont just embrace sport in Australia. The Heidelberg Collingwood saga was also hampered greatly by Heidlebergs questionable management which lasted decades ... still remember the whole ruckus when they had to install floodlights which they couldnt afford and were threatened of being tossed out. Another note on the AFL clubs soccer interest was the transfer fees - this was a revenue stream that caught there attention big time especially with the likes of Viduka.
