Piano Masterclass on Ravel - Jeux d'eau : Jean Yves Thibaudet teaches Nicolas van Poucke
A fine masterclass on the elements of performance in Maurice Ravel's famous work for solo piano - Jeux d'eau. This was earlier available on RUclips, but was then very selfishly deleted by the performer (student) - Nicolas van Poucke. Maybe he didn't want anybody else to learn !! Anyway, here it is in the form of a re-upload.
Jean Yves Thibaudet is a famous French pianist, who studied at the Paris Conservatory, and enjoys a varied performing career worldwide with numerous international orchestras (for example, The Berlin Philharmonic and The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), and acclaimed artists like Renee Fleming, Yuri Bashmet and Joshua Bell.

His critiques draw so much expression and beauty out of this dude's already brilliant playing. I love every bit of direction he gave
🎉wonderful
So meaningful time I had. Thank you so much!!
I played Jeux d'Eau for my senior recital on a 9" grand. Nicolas' performance here seems a bit heavy and sluggish. The sonorities MUST sparkle and sing like an orchestra! Bring out the inner melodies more and don't cut the pedal off so much. Still, quite commendable for a workhorse of a piece!!! Thibaudet brought up EXCELLENT points during discovery and showed his true genius as an artist!!!
I play it like Richter's interpretation. It's quite different than this interpretation. Also insanely fast but fun af
I noticed quite a few instances of wrong notes or wrong number of repeats
Thibaudet bleibt erstaunlich freundlich.
Tempi e colori molto belli! Un po' alla gilels
sounds so good
Yooo how does Thibaudet just sight read Jeaux d'eau as if it's nothing
He already learned it, that's why he is doing this masterclass
@@jukeban646 ah of course, I must have forgot to use my one braincell when commenting this
Thank you so much for sharing this valuable MC 😊🙏
Sublime musicians! Young and old!
15:02 Jean Thibaudet, son incroyable Son d'or.🥀
❤🎵🎶
Freaking helpful thanks!
The piano itself has a wonderful sound, what is it?
Wonderful performance by a "student" (already an artist, really) and great masterclass by JYT. I would only suggest that perhaps Nicolas deleted it because he doesn't want it on RUclips, given the exposure and comments that come with any video, regardless of the quality. It has nothing to do with being selfish or not "allowing" us to learn. Artists are very worried about what goes out into the ether. Luckily, this video reflects him extremely well, but the misunderstanding from so many--inside and outside the musical world--is important to address. Granted, in playing for this masterclass, I am sure there was either tacit or written understanding that he would not own the rights. Still, I don't fault him for his attempt to control his public image. All artists do that, which is something that is becoming increasingly difficult in our society/culture.
Thank you for this comment. This masterclass was held in June 2011, so by now a decade ago. My God, how time flies. Anyway, I remember this day as if it were yesterday. I was asked on a couple of days notice to step in for a colleague of mine who was ill at the time. I had just learned the piece, a week or so, prior to this date. I kindly asked AVRO to take the video offline after a couple of years. Since I felt it doesn’t reflect my playing and what I consider a professional level. That could be considered selfish. Perhaps it is. But then it is my playing and artistic reputation, and not that of @dr Saurav Bose, that is on the line. Anyway glad that you and many others have enjoyed the video. Maestro Thibaudet is a great artist. I try my best and hopefully I will succeed at becoming one too. Best wishes, Nicolas van Poucke
@@nicolasvanpoucke.pianist I don't think it's a selfish act to want to show one's best side as a professional. However all artists have to develop and this is merely a document of an event 10 years ago. The reality is no one will look at this and think you're a rubbish player, and the ability to live with our 'mistakes' is a quality that I believe helps us grow as performers and human beings. There are a lot of amazing things here in your playing which hopefully you can appreciate, given the fullness of time.
@@nicolasvanpoucke.pianist I respect anyone who can play this. I also know that some artists like Zimerman dislike RUclips for having his performances because it's like "people don't have to buy albums anymore". That's something because the performer needs money so I understand.
Dear @@nicolasvanpoucke.pianist, please rest assured, your reputation is absolutely safe! Everyone goes through the learning process, and nobody watches masterclasses to be judgemental on students, what we are interested in are the insights from the teacher, and I'm who's struggling with this piece (I have small hands which really makes it near to impossible to play) had more than a few insights into how to approach this piece, thanks to you and the Thibaudet! Enormous thanks to you both, it's really a gem!
@@enerjazzer thank you.
Very helpful master class, and fine student performer! Thank you for making this available again.
ok, so basically: more pedal!
This is amazing. Made me appreciate Jeux d’eau more! Thanks for uploading. 😊
I liked
This guy looks like Prince.
Thank you so much ! I had seen this video a few years back, and was really distraught when I found out it had disappeared... This is a great masterclass, as are the others Thibaudet made during this session. Such a great teacher...
why is his shoe off
Because it’s not on?
You are a genius, who are you and how are you so wise in the ways of science?
He didn't renew the service.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor laughed so hard at this. cheers mate
Because he's "shoewing" off.
Thibaudet is one of the most respected pianists in the world, but he also seems like such a nice guy and without ego. His comments are spot-on!
