Akinlawon Ladipo "Akin" Mabogunje (October 18, 1931 - August 4, 2022) was a trailblazing Nigerian geographer who left an indelible mark on the study of urban development and geography. Born in Kano, Nigeria, he received his early education at Ibadan Grammar School before continuing to University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where he later became a lecturer.
Mabogunje’s groundbreaking book, Urbanization in Nigeria (1968), explored the dynamics of urban growth and state formation, becoming a cornerstone in understanding African urban development.
