Fishing for Giants: Halibut and Striper Fishing San Francisco Bay
On this episode of Fishin' on the Bay ,we venture out onto the San Francisco Bay to target Halibut and Striper with our special guest, and friend, George. The day started off rough with heavy winds and choppy water, making it a challenge to find clean water and stay dry. Fortunately, we managed to land a Halibut early on, which boosted our spirits before we switched gears to Striper fishing. Once we did, it was non-stop action, and George was reeling them in!

Is it best at incoming or outgo?
I found one of those anchovy colored lures right around the corner on the shore at point San Pablo
What kind of rodholders are you using?
Scotty with the one inch rail mount kit. They sell those separately.
Why all shakers and pups? time of year? Location?
It all depends. Halibut numbers are down because Salmon fishing is off-limits. Stripers are always on the move in the Bay, but this year, we’re seeing bigger ones coming through compared to last year. Last couple trips out Halibut were hard to find.

Best striper action on the bay I’ve ever seen…well done! Would love to see a few more sonar screen shots of the schooling frenzy as they make me feel I’m on the water with you guys knowing we’re about to get bit! Couldn’t tell if your inflatable PFD was being worn underneath your Simms camo jacket. If so, I’ve been told their effectiveness is almost nil.

We were bottom bouncing for Halibut with herring, throwing and trolling 3/4 oz swim baits for striper.

Yes sir. We get on the water too late to pick up live bait.

Sorry for the late reply. I use a Phoenix with a Shamano spinning reel w/30 pound braid. And for Halibut I use a Diawa 300 with a Shamano Trevala w/30 pound braid.

actually there is only a fish cleaning station where the charter boats launch at
@@JLONGBALL007 Looks like fish were being cleaned on a big table outside the dumpster wall enclosure next to the two wash down lanes. Is that not so?
@aProudOG yes there is a boater fish cleaning area next to the wash down station in Richmond. No water there though.
It’s a learning process for us , we have scrapped the bottoms a few times 😅, but keep it safe and try to stay 20 yards from shoreline especially on incoming tides you can’t see the rocks till it’s too late .
Very cool video, subbed . Do you have any pointers on fishing that area of Angel Island for stripers and where not to veer out to ? Because you said you hit the bottom , I’d love to try that area out. Any info would help appreciated and what times are best to fish that area? What color choice lures should I buy it looks green ?? Just keep a safe distance. It gets really shallow in spots.

We troll about 3.5mph in shallow water about 5-10ft.

Are they finally protecting the baby rock cod in the bay? In the seventies 9'' to 15'' were fairly common from shore. As pressure came up that reduced, also as some Poke Polers began using baby (I mean 2'') for ling cod bait, fish tanks, and even food. It really took away a nice nursery for the bay in general, and surrounding areas outside the gate. I dig PP just need a lil common sense in the harvest. -Good fishin' Guys, like your Buddy's Baby Flasher.
There was some changes to rock fish regs that only allowed you to fish for them in deeper water. That time has passed so you you can fish for them in shallow water now. Always check the regs when not certain. Times have definitely changed hopefully these measures help the fish population to thrive more. :)
Had a boat from 78- 91 fishing only in the bay, at alcatraz and bay Bridge would just kill 9- 15 inch rockfish, one day in 79, 3 of us caught 85 rock fish 1 mile south from the bridge in the middle of the bay, came back the next 3days and they were gone ,all nice fish too
