2014 Q7 TDI EGR Removal (Part 4 of 4)
This is a technical four-part series that fully catalogs the process of removing a leaking EGR cooler from this car over the course of several days. As there are a few videos out there that relate to this process, but none that show the nitty-gritty of it, I wanted to record the parts that everyone else edited out (good/bad/ugly included!). There is only editing for flow on this.... the job itself probably took upwards of nine hours (real time), and this is condensed down to about four. I added navigation markers to help reference key points in the process.

2013 Forester Wheel Bearing Failure

I replaced the front wheel bearings on my 2013 Subaru Forester in late July / early August of 2023. After approximately 15,000 miles and seven months, the bearing abruptly failed, which necessitated replacement on the late winter hardpack in the driveway. Fun times! So, when you start hearing your car making unusual noises, don't assume that the new parts can't be the culprit!

Great video ! Thanks for doing it. What happens with the exhaust gas temp sensor?
I left it on the EGR cooler initially, but it was throwing a code, so I ended up removing it from the cooler, plugging it in, and just zipping it up near the connector (under the intake manifold).

I see no power trip. 58 is a bigger number than 55.
Your own video showed you were doing 94 km per hour which is 58 mph. You are speeding and it clearly could have cited you for your violation. Stop whining
🤣
hi bro !! just looking around for travel destinations! seems the weather is nice in Oct there in Fairbanks, is that easy to see the aurora? many thanks!!
When the aurora is glowing, it is easy to see it, but it is not a constant phenomenon... and not all auroras are created equal. Some are magical dances of light in the sky while others are just small bands that don't seem to move at all. Late February through early April are defintely the best general times to do aurora viewing. October weather is also a mixed bag anymore. This month used to be consistently cold... if snow fell, it stayed until spring. Now, it can be beautiful weather worth of only light jackets (or no jacket at all) and precipitation is as often rain as it is snow. Snow tends to melt rather than stay all winter until closer to November... and even that is not a guarantee.
@@jasonwtheis5921thanks for your info !! hopes I can see it this time 😄 !
Speed limit was 55 and you were going 58? And he really stopped you for that? Petty
He was respectful about it, he left you off with a warning and you tried arguing back. He said “please” and even said “drive safe” you don’t know asshole cops until you been to Georgia 💀
I don't disagree with you at all that he wasn't an "asshole cop!" That's why I included "...but he managed to save the stumble!" in the very beginning of the description. He never should have pulled me over in the first place, nor accused me of not using my blinker (which only was done due to the flimsiness of "speeding.") However, aside from that, the interaction was absolutely pleasant. And, since I knew that I was recording the whole interaction, I was definitely going to make my assertion that I did, in fact (not opinion), use the indicator, since I had no idea at that point whether he would try to write me up for that. I was not disrespectful in that assertion in the least, nor did I say a word against the "speeding" accusation, since I was technically speeding, even if it was wholly insignificant. Others have noted that it may have involved an element of training since there were two troopers in the vehicle, which is fine by me in retrospect. At the time, my observation was that he burned up five minutes of time for four individuals for no reason aside from ego.
60 in a 55 is still breaking the law
58 in a 55. I know. It was viciously dangerous. I'm so lucky to have a bored LEO in the vicinity to keep us safe.
I have mine Q7 on timing belt change, resealing all the stuff is common thing with 3.0 TDi, it has to be done on every TDi sooner or later. You did well with cleaning the intake from carbon, this makes a lot for restoring the power of the engine.
Wow. That was really a shocking "power trip". The driver passes an ambulance running with red lights, passes a Trooper who is going the speed limit, the Trooper stops him, is calm, polite, and only gives him a verbal warning. Shocking. Poor, picked on, whiney citizen.
Your lack of attention to detail is impressive. Well done! 🎉
Hello Jason W Theis! Can I use your video in my video plus comments to help people learn lessons so they can drive safer? I'll put your name on the screen, thank you for reading.
No, thanks! This happened a while ago, and I already granted access to another compiler. I appreciate you stopping in, though!
@@jasonwtheis5921 Yes thank you
Also replaced the oil cooler and just like yours, I noted the flickering glow plug....exactly my issue, except after a while it refused to start. Did you have any issues and resolve?
That was a couple years ago now. Car still runs and performs well - probably better just because I cleaned out the intake, which was about 50% blocked due to EGR caking (carbon buildup mixed with the small amount of oil blow-by from the turbo). I have had some issues with the blinking glow plug light since then. The issue primarily seems to be caused by the #2 cylinder glow plug, which has a pressure sensor (none of the other glow plugs do). The code is that cylinder pressure is too high. Monitoring while running, I can see no evidence of high pressure. However, the code does occasionally return. Since this video, I replaced all of the glow plugs and the fuel injectors. I have about 147,000 miles on the car now.
I highly recommend that you have a Ross-Tech VCDS unit to interface with this car, if you do not already. You're also welcome to swing by the AudiWorld forum for Mark I Q7s; lots of helpful folks there to provide additional feedback on your car's issues.
@@jasonwtheis5921 Thank you for the replies. Highly appreceiated

Dude, they're really uptight about the speed limit in Alaska, huh? I'm in California, and even the CHP aren't this uptight about the speed limit.
🤣 No, not normally, which is why it came as such a surprise. My SOP is 5 mph or 10%, whichever is less, and I've never had a problem (other than this stop). As someone else noted, it was possibly a training situation evidenced by there being two people in the cruiser. Just this morning, I headed into town on this exact same stretch of road, at this exact same speed, and, after moving back to the right lane after passing another car, the car that was approaching behind me in the left lane then passed... and was an AST cruiser!
You were speeding past a cop and then wonder why he's pulling you over - plus your high speed dash cam records you breaking the law - You must be from Fairbanks.
58 in a 55. Horrifying! LOL
Are you still in Fairbanks?@@jasonwtheis5921
Which do you prefer i have 18 escape titanium and cant decide if the led i have now is better or worse than the hid
For my Q7, the LED is a definite improvement. However, it isn't nearly the improvement that my 2013 Forester experiences with its LEDs versus performance halogens (H11 low and 9006 high)! That car lights up the night shockingly well now. I think that the LED technology will only get better as more options become available for HID replacement.

pOwEr TrIp lmao sure
what's the speed limit on this highway? 55?!?! also, what dashcam are you using, looks good! Maybe this trooper was in training and was asked by his TO to stop and go through the process?
Yes, 55. This dashcam is a Blackvue DR750S (2-channel). It's possible there was a training situation; this is the first time I've seen them riding as a pair, and the spotlight was shining straight up my driver side, so I didn't see them coming up from both sides - I thought the guy on the passenger side was the one with whom I would be talking. It worked out fine despite the petty excuse for the stop.
@@jasonwtheis5921 i see, i think the explanations were great and easy to follow. well thanks for sharing and glad it worked out for the most part. 55 is pretty slow haha.
Why are you passing an ambulance with lights on, and police. Pff. The only one on a trip is you.
Your attention to detail is poor. Both vehicles were just driving on the highway; there were no emergency lights activated.
@@jasonwtheis5921 Regerdless if the lights were on or off, no one in there right mind would think it’s okay to pass both a cop and an ambulance and think they won’t be pulled over. Your just angry because your video makes you look like an ass
Not at all. No anger here. I cannot even recall how many LEOs I've passed over the years within the normal flow of traffic. It was nonsense for this one to pull me over, aside from the very likely explanation others have suggested: Training. I wouldn't have posted it at all were it not for the lame excuse provided that I did not signal. I, of all people, am the last person you'd want to use that excuse on. I signal everything that ought to have a signal whether in the presence of others or not (as is evidenced by the lead up to the stop), and a lane change certainly counts.
that was an unlawful stop his dash cam will show you using your signal apart from your own equipment recording it I would fight that ticket I know a little about how Alaska state troopers operate
Good points! Happily, he came to his senses at the end and "gave me a warning." If something like this happens again and goes differently, I'll remember to request their footage!
@@jasonwtheis5921 figure out the exact date and time and officers name you can still get incident number from stop he will have recorded your information i would do that try to do a public re4cords request on his dash cam for that stop and then submit a complaint on his ass and go in filming to do it
@@jasonwtheis5921 his dash cam will show you using your light just get incident number one is generated for virtually every stop
If the speed limit is 55mph your dash cam confirms your violation. Regardless as to whether you used your turn signal or not. He did advise you of both reasons upon contact with you. Your own dash cam recorded you going 94kph/59mph to pass both the Trooper and EMS. Therefore the probable cause standard was met as it pertained to your lawful seizure of person under the 4TH Amendment. What I can tell you, is that was a Trooper still on/in his probationary period, partnering with his FTO (Field Training Officer) who approached on your passenger side. That was their lawful means to initiate the traffic stop and use you as training material. Yes, it was petty, but Constitutionally sound on the Troopers end. Looking at his FTO body language and demeanor I'd bet the discussion in the car between the both of them surrounded his brash and somewhat hostile behavior towards you for simply notifying him of your dash camera. He knew that he did not have enough proof to attain a conviction in the court against you. That much was most likely determined (verbal warning) by the both of them even before the lights were activated on the cruiser.
55mph is a low speed limit.
It’s Alaska. Think of the road conditions
Why is it that no matter where you go state pigs seem to think they are god and that it's ok for them to lie? Cover your asses people, record everything! Of course they are not all bad, there are some good ones but very few and far between!
bruh the ambulance had its emergency lights on your a goof
LOL No it didn't! Those are just LED running lights not playing nice with the frame rate. So funny.
Bruh the ambulance was in slow lane going slower than normal traffick it is normal to move to fast lane to pass and he did a safe lane change with turning light activated you know as well as I do there are way more unsafe drivers out there that state trooper did not have to stop him
@@jasonwtheis5921 So you're telling me those red flashing lights are not emergency lights. Also, I feel like the ambulance did have its lights on (not sure emergency), but still, that officer had no clue what he was talking about. :/
@@ResonatingPhantom the lights weren't flashing, the way daytime lights on a car work is they flicker fast enough to look like a steady light on camera it looks like it's flashing
Mr. Theis, go with Tapit Trice for the win and rhyme.
That's my standard! This car, a Subaru Forester, doesn't automatically triple-flash like most cars of the last decade or two, and it's a bit finicky about flashing if you don't fully engage it, so the "click" is a full engage of the signal, but I typically have it held between my fingers, so the release is gentle enough that you cannot hear it in the video. If there's one thing this car is not, it's quiet at highway speeds! Between the road noise and the audio book, there is no chance of hearing just the flasher.
Good video Thank you Record police Get a dashcam use a cell phone

Yes, that's fine! I apologize for the delayed reply. "Fairbanks, Alaska; the temperature was around -5F and roads were normal ("Fairbanks slick"). My son was driving with my daughter and stopped to turn left at the intersection. A small pickup (Ford Ranger) pulled up to the left turn on the opposite side. Traffic was light this morning, and the pickup could have easily completed the turn before the approaching vehicles were a concern, but he instead slowly entered and crossed the intersection just in time to cause a serious collision with a telecommunications work van. Neither vehicle had passengers, and the Ranger contained a dog in the cab. Nobody appeared to have any serious injuries."
