Test driving the awesome new Roland VAD 706. Powered by the new TD-50X module and the vast potential of the Prismatic Sound Engine, the VAD 706 also features the new VH-14D digital hi-hat (the first of it's kind), 16" and 18" cymbals, Acoustic Design shells (including a 22" Kick), and comes in four beautiful finishes. Miles Gibbons with Tush 2018

Laying down some disco grooves with Tush at the Sunday Social dance party.
We should have ours in about two months
Great playing. How do you get the kits to change automatically while playing?
I’m sending a MIDI PC command from Ableton. You can also program the head and rim of a pad, or a footswitch, to change kits.
Buying mine Tomorrow after testing at the store! Great hi hat feeling finally!
gnar
killer playing
I really appreciate the balance in your mix, excellent ears~feeling.
Nice playing Miles. Very clean!
TIGHT!
Amazing!!
Ughhhhh I want to start a metal band with you!
Getting mine in a month and this vid made me excited for it! loved your custom settings and the way you showed the changes!
Sounds muffled af, is that on your end or is that the sounds?
I’d disagree. Check some of the videos without music. You’re probably hearing less drums because of the mix with the tracks.
I just stumbled on this demo. Great drumming! Obviously amazing kit too! :)
Thanks!
That kit looks amazing, great playing as well!
How does this kit respond to playing with brushes?
It’s got dedicated samples with brush sounds and a Brush Switch mode that allows for sweeps. The tracking is pretty good. Apparently it’s even better with nylon brushes, but I don’t have any of those to test it with.
Why not mount the toms on the bass?!?!?!
There are no Tom mounts on the bass drum so you can’t. I feel like that might create some cross-talk problems, what with three shells vibrating in tandem. Plus, most high-end kits eschew the bass drum mount so you see more of each drum.
Also, if you mount the toms on the bass drum, you are almost always guaranteed to get a large gap between the toms which is just uncomfortable to play. At least for me
APA ITU NUX?????
Awesome sound to awesome playing. I plan to upgrade my TD-50 to the X version after Roland figures how to import my trigger and eq settings I have labored over.
I need that fourth Tom
Lots of room for more drums/cymbals... there’s a 4th Tom input, and 4 more Auxiliary inputs too.
@@milesgibbons9287 True. I was hoping they’d offer it for so much $$
Great job
Great playing man. Kit sounds sweet too! 👍🏻
Thanks Jules!
Jeez, when you bought that kit Roland should of paid YOU.
Dude. Yes.
excellent video sounds everything
👍👍👍🔥
Closed my eyes and it's just so hard to tell from the real thing now. I think these electric drums still don't have the toms right yet however, but it will get there soon.
what do you think of the new VH 14 ?
I love it... they are thinner than a VH-10/11/12/13. The thinness, combined with full sized top and bottom pads, makes these the best feeling electronic hi-hats I’ve tried. The triggering is great too... higher open/closed resolution, greater sensitivity and positional sensing have all contributed to a noticeable increase in tonal variation, nuance and subtlety. The 50X sounds are optimized for the VH-14D too, so they are also a factor.
Great demonstration and playing man! Can't wait to put my hands on the new hihats
great demonstration. thank you
i wish they made two floor toms, one rack tom configuration.
No reason you can't put that together! The VAD shells, module and hardware are all available as separate components.
@@milesgibbons9287 I know but I don't want to be forced to buy the extra floor tom
@@kushking420 for the moment, then, it seems you are at an impasse ha ha. Maybe more configurations will roll out eventually.
These drums look and sound fantastic, but the $10,500 CAD price point is absolutely wild. As long as Roland continue to release the previous VAD line then I have no complaints, although it'd be nice if we could get some newer more consumer friendly options sooner than later.
The VAD line runs parallel to the traditional V-Drums line... like V-Drums, the VAD kits are available at several tiers/price-points. The 306, 503 and 506 configurations are all fairly new, and are not being replaced by this one. I’m also confident at some point we’ll see other configurations come out to.
@@milesgibbons9287 hey thanks for the reply, I also wanted to add that the Roland TD-50KV2 isn't much cheaper than the VAD706, there's only a $500 difference. I see no reason to purchase a TD-50KV2 for $500 less if all Roland is going to do is add in an extra floor tom pad. I understand it comes with the rack and additional hardware, but the price point doesn't seem enticing enough given the comparisons between the two models. If they offered the standard V-Drum KV2 with a TD-27 or something along those lines, I think it would be much better.
@@jaydoode15 TD-50KV2 and VAD 706 are not competitive products. For some people, the feel and aesthetic of acoustic style shells are worth the price jump (and getting only three toms). For other people, the shell style is not a priority, so getting an extra drum for less money makes sense. For what it’s worth, the 50KV2 doesn’t come with “extra” hardware. The VAD comes with cymbal/Tom stands, and a module stand. In both cases, you need to supply hi-hat and snare stands, a throne, and a pedal. These are brand new products. Generally, new technology is released with a new product like this, and then eventually gets ported into other configurations. The TD-27 is still fairly new too, so it wouldn’t surprise me if a configuration with the VH-14D and upgraded “traditional” pads is released eventually (seeing as the 27 is only packaged in the TD-27KV, and VAD 503/506 configurations).
@@jaydoode15 For me, the acoustic shells offer no benefit at all (they're a burden actually since they take up more space in my practice space), and I'd rather have the extra floor tom and lower price tag.
@@DarrenX9 the rack for the KV2 looks massive. I think if you could fit the TD-50KV2 in your practice studio, then you could most likely fit a VAD706. The main difference aside from the shell sizes is that the KV2 comes with a big rack while the VAD has cymbal mounts and a real floor tom + a 22" bass drum. While the two models aren't competitive I still think Roland could make the KV2 much cheaper.
Great video! Thanks for the comprehensive overview. I got two questions if you have the time: 1) How do blast beats sound on this kit in terms of hit detection? 2) Does it come with double bass pedals? If not, are they compatible with any and all double bass pedals? Thanks!
I’m not great at blast beats... more of a Deftones guy. That said, I just tried some blast beats, and the kit response was great. Zero latency and accurate dynamic reproduction. You can set the triggers to respond more naturally, or you can bump up the sensitivity so they give you super consistent big sounds (even if you aren’t perfect in your execution). This drum kit doesn’t come with a bass drum pedal, but any single or double pedal will work. The bass drum is an acoustic shell, with a regular hoop, just muffled and with built-in electronics. Literally any pedal will work.
@@milesgibbons9287 amazing. Thanks so much for the quick response.
Finally a review video of someone who really knows how to play! Awesome, thanks for this!
Great playing man. Super cool you already have it/got to play it. Any chance you could put up a demo of any more of the jazz kits? Would love to hear the combo setting/higher tuned kits. Thanks!
Will see if I can get around to this... busy couple of weeks ahead.
It looks such like an acoustic kit, how did you get it early? Great playing
Thanks, seems everyone else that is doing RUclips VAD-706 videos is just regurgitating Roland's propaganda. They leave out the overview of the pricing and pricing of all the options. The in-depth explanation of how your existing custom TD-50 kits or any that are being sold for the existing TD-50 will not work with the TD-50X or the TD-50 with the new upgrade. 🤔 But, here we have so quality examples of what the sounds are with great paying!
This is the best video I have seen so far, for the sounds I am looking for.
Thanks for sharing this video. Roland should send you a royalty check.
how do you like the hi hat ?
I love it! The thinner pad feels great, very comfy to play. The positional sensing and higher pressure and open/close resolutions give you really deep tonal variety.
@@milesgibbons9287 Thanks for the reply. My wallet is scared now. :D
Hell of a kit! Congrats!
Solid playing and versatility.
Thanks greatly!
Agreed, really fun playing here
How about VH14 playability? It seems not to be way better than VH13? What about open close transition (not sounds) comparison to the previous versions?
I think it feels, triggers and sounds great - it's definitely an improvement. The pads are thinner, so they have a little more give and feel more natural than the VH-10\11\13. The triggering is awesome too... the open\close response is definitely improved. Greater resolution in that regard, and positional sensing, means that there is a much higher level of tonal variance you can get from these hats.
@@milesgibbons9287 Thanks! Can I ask you a little detail about the new software (X)? Is it possible now to isolate some sound only in the phones output? I would like to send only ride and hi hat to phones just to have two addittional "direct outs"! If I can send only them only to phone output (panning Ride full Left and Hi Hat full Right...for example) using an Y cable I could have two more direct outs!
@@milesgibbons9287 Unfortunately in the original TD50 you can't exclude sounds from the phones...if you go to the phones/master output menu you can't exclude sounds from the phones output! Amb/MFX123/Song/Click/Mixin also you can't exclude from the phones output....at least on TD50! If you can I never found how to do it?!
@@marcogiusfredi6552 ah yes, that is correct. Just verified: same situation with the TD-50X
@@milesgibbons9287 That's really a shame! A simply software update and we could have two more outputs!
Hey man, great vid and playing! what software do you use to mix audio and video together?
Cheers! Ableton to sync, then iMovie. Very simple.
That's awesome Miles!
