Documenting an era of indie music (2001-2009). Three new episodes every month!
The story of the Futureheads' heart-stopping 'Hounds of Love' cover
The Futureheads are an art rock band from Sunderland in the UK who many 2000s-heads remember fondly for their classic cover of 'Hounds of Love' by Kate Bush. It was voted best single of 2005 by the NME and still stands up today as an essential gem of the era.
In this video I get into why they decided to cover such a famous song, the troubled making of their brilliant debut album with Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill, what the band think of 'Hounds of Love' today and why they will never cover a Kate Bush song again.
I heartily recommend going to see the Futureheads live when they tour England next year. They are coming to London, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham. It will be ace!

Wild Beasts were the last band that mattered
Просмотров 56128 дней назад
Wild Beasts are my favourite band of all time, so this one was difficult to put together as it wasn't easy to find the right words. The four piece from Cumbria dabbled in theatrical art rock and luxurious synth pop, releasing five classic albums before splitting up in 2018. If you loved them, you really loved them. They were just one of those bands. In this video I make the argument that Wild B...
A wild tour of Japan almost broke The Libertines
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Месяц назад
#thelibertines #petedoherty #japan Japan in the spring of 2003 was the Libertines' first-ever tour outside of Europe and it almost ended in catastrophe. In this video I get into an infamous on-stage bust up in Sapporo, why Pete risked it all to smuggle hard drugs into the country, late nights in the bright neon-soaked lights of Tokyo and why the band have never toured Japan since 2003.

The Datsuns rocked
Просмотров 5384 месяца назад
I've been spinning the debut Datsuns album a lot lately and I forgot how much it kicked ass. I'll fight anyone who doesn't think Lady, MFer from Hell, In Love, Sittin' Pretty and of course Harmonic Generator were some of the best rock songs of the decade. They fell out of my orbit after 2002 so it's been enjoyable to be reacquainted with them after so long. That debut is super tight with not a ...

What did I miss? What’s your favourite album from that golden year? Can it really be 20 years ago? 😱 #thelibertines #thecribs #franzferdinand
Were Modest Mouse one hit wonders?
Просмотров 1985 месяцев назад
#modestmouse #documentary #musicdocumentary In this video, I ask if it's fair to consider Modest Mouse the era's best one-hit wonder, why Isaac Brock's turbulent upbringing influenced Float On's lyrics, how the song catapulted them from cult indie darlings to mainstream success and why it remains a positive anthem amongst the doom and gloom that we are all experiencing in 2024. It's also the fi...
Why 'The Suburbs' is Arcade Fire's best album
Просмотров 5856 месяцев назад
Arcade Fire's third album 'The Suburbs' came off the back of two indie rock beasts in 'Funeral' and 'Neon Bible'. When it was released in 2010 it took a while to settle in but it eventually revealed itself to be a thoughtful record that rewarded repeated listens. In this video, I explore how Win Butler and Regine Chassagne's childhood in the 'burbs inspired the album's strong theme, how songs l...
Cut Copy were the cosmic time travellers of the 2000s
Просмотров 7896 месяцев назад
I was a massive fan of the Australian band Cut Copy and they were like a musical gateway drug for me into a world of electronic music! From 2006 until 2009 I wore my Cut Copy t-shirt so much that it was full of holes and definitely no longer sparkling white by the time it reluctantly went in the bin. Their debut album 'Bright Like Neon Love' takes me back to a special time in my life and I stil...

That is record is a quality LP top to bottom...
💯. I think it's got better with age too.
Favours for Favours is their best track.
Good shout
class video as usual, and this song just has that perfect early indie feel and sound. I love Kate Bush, but this is better than the original.
Cheers mate.
There's a really good, detailed account from someone who was there and witnessed it unfold on the website Everything2, can't link on here of course but easily found if you Google 'Everything2 Leeds festival riots'. This person says it started with a bunch of people just mindlessly setting fire to things, then it escalated when the riot police showed up and started baton charging, beating and arresting random people who were just standing nearby. Also apparently there were nasty riots in 2000 and 2001 and the festival was lucky to still be held at Temple Newsam in 2002.
Decent Days and Nights is a personal favorite of mine as I heard it while playing Burnout Revenge years back, though Hounds of Love is a strikingly beautiful track in of itself
Yes mate, Decent Days and Nights is a classic too!
Great video, and a spot on analysis. I really liked their first two LP's at the time, and I must go back and revisit their subsequent releases. 'Autumn Shade'- in all it's parts - is one of my favourite songs of all time, but especially Part I from 'Highly Evolved', and Part II from Winning Days'. The song 'Winning Days' itself really helped me overcome a severe bout of depression in 2004/05, which I will always credit Craig for unknowingly helping me with. I'm really glad that things improved for him, and he is able to continue making records and playing shows when he is up to it. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for the kind words mate. Good to hear the Vines helped you back then!
Somewhere Across Forever is pop perfection. The vocal harmonies, the sense of loss and longing. It's a hearbreaking and beautiful song --that also rocks. I thank the stars for this song. It's perfect. Hauntingly catchy. I love this song.
Agreed, awesome song!
One of the first songs he wrote for Is This It ? It was at least the sixth. Soma, Trying Your Luck, New York City Cops and Alone Together were writen first, and he wrote the Modern Age and Last Nite followed it.
great video, love the factory gigs, do you know any japanese bands that sound similar to the libertines/any post punk revival band?
Thanks mate. You know what I'm stumped there, I love a lot of Japanese music but more on the electronic end. If there was a Japanese Libertines I'd love to hear em!
Every single week during the early 00s the NME were saying that every 2 bit band was the new Nirvana! Rediculous
The Chats are The Vines babies
The Chats are cool, but they aren't nearly as diverse and unique as the Vines
@ still cool though
@@arnoldsilva1111 Agreed
"sapacaixa do agreste"
They had one good song
Which song?
@@indiesleaze Get Free. I've listened to a couple of their albums but it's the only song that stands out.
@@liamw93 Each to their own, I guess. 'Winning Days' and 'Autumn Shade' are just a couple of other bangers... maybe you should listen again with fresh ears.
Paul Morrissey ?!
Thanks 😊
they might have been rich kids , but they earned every step they took ‘
Agreed. Their parents weren't writing those songs either!
no they weren't and that last gig was pitiful
low standards you need to get out the house more often. singer with a misplaced jesus complex.
Outrageous take 😆
Fantastic! Pls make more Pete Doherty vids
I've loved this band for many years, great shout
They were magic.
they're an example of right person wrong time
That Hammersmith gig, still what I'd call the best gig I've ever been to. Sang my ruddy heart out during the encore. Seminal stuff.
You know it 😉
I remember in the beginning when people were shocked at their song "Assembly". I heard it and just knew they were onto something. They more they kept at their music, the more love they received. Now, that members are doing their own thing, they want Wild Beasts back.
I would love them to get back together but their solo stuff is magic too.
I got into them too late. Amazing music.
What is your favourite album?
@@indiesleaze Two Dancers. The first time I heard All the kings men, I thought the singer was strange when he hit the falsetto, but damn, there was something so interesting about their sound.
Just bought my tickets for Osaka today!
Nice one, they were fantastic in the UK a few months ago.
They made one great and one very good album but sadly they never really Evolved (pun intended) beyond that sound and that was there downfall (along with Craig’s metal health falling apart ) and you are correct to call NME out who seemingly loved Craig completely spiralling out of control and at times seem to encourage it
Yeah those articles have not aged well, thanks for watching mate.
Craig's 'metal' health wasn't so much a problem. His asperger's syndrome was, though. "-)
the vines are an amazing band, each of their record has great tacks, their first two records are pure gold, but also their latest release. Even Melodia which is the worst has some good tunes. Craig continued to write music, his side project white shadows from 10 years ago is nice as well. I think the issue is fame, we should be able to enojy music without putting people on a pedestal or putting so much pressure on them, I am sorry I might never be able to hear them live but I am happy they keep on releasing new music
You are spot on. I wasn't aware of Craig's side project so will check it out now.
whyy doyouu speaklikeee thisss?
It's ma voice!
From my Zume player and Midnight Club LA is where I heard of this band. Zume player had their music video Let's Make Love For The Death Up Above pre installed and MCLA had the track The Rat Is Dead on its tracklist. Man time flies by, that was almost 20 years ago.

Stupid cringy song why the fuck they have to play with interpol

This was dope to watch! Thank you. (:
Metal zone is one of my all time favorite songs. the Vines are one of the best bands of all time in my opinion.
Living in difficult. Interpol offers relief at times. Paul is haunted by the ghost of Ian, but aren't we all.
Hurstville… affluent😂 wrong!
I'm just adding Can't Stand Me Now, You're My Waterloo, East Of Eden and Beg Steal Or Borrow but otherwise you're on point
East of Eden is a great shout!
Absolutely obsessed with this band. Great video! Their music is so emotional for me
Still one of the best albums I’ve ever heard
I agree!
they weren't big in the US. solid group though.
The cover band I play in in the UK (the Home Grown) play Spread Your Love and Whatever Happened to My Rock and Roll, and in most pubs it seems like the songs are not recognised by most folks. But every now and again someone will approach us during a break and say "that is such a great song" or "I've not seen anyone cover BRMC before". So hope is not all lost on music lovers.
Loads of bands from the 2000s loved oasis. The libertines, arctic monkeys, Kasabian…..
Same with Kasabian
