Heroin addiction took Albert Hammond Jr to the brink
Просмотров 21 тыс.16 часов назад
It's been easy to have a soft spot for Albert Hammond Jr over the years as he always seemed the most happy-go-lucky member of the Strokes, but a gnarly addiction to heroin almost cost him his life in the second half of the 2000s. In this video I get into whether he turned to drugs due to the suffocating success of the Strokes, a toxic friendship with Ryan Adams, his lowest point during the maki...
The story of the Futureheads' heart-stopping 'Hounds of Love' cover
Просмотров 547Месяц назад
The Futureheads are an art rock band from Sunderland in the UK who many 2000s-heads remember fondly for their classic cover of 'Hounds of Love' by Kate Bush. It was voted best single of 2005 by the NME and still stands up today as an essential gem of the era. In this video I get into why they decided to cover such a famous song, the troubled making of their brilliant debut album with Gang of Fo...
Wild Beasts were the last band that mattered

Wild Beasts are my favourite band of all time, so this one was difficult to put together as it wasn't easy to find the right words. The four piece from Cumbria dabbled in theatrical art rock and luxurious synth pop, releasing five classic albums before splitting up in 2018. If you loved them, you really loved them. They were just one of those bands. In this video I make the argument that Wild B...
A wild tour of Japan almost broke The Libertines

In this video I get into an infamous on-stage bust up in Sapporo, why Pete risked it all to smuggle hard drugs into the country, late nights in the bright neon-soaked lights of Tokyo and why the band have never toured Japan since 2003.

I get it tho. I was in a band and enjoying playing gigs in my own country, but when my band mates wanted to start playing Europe, I just couldn’t be bothered… quite simply. Travelling around in a van, eating shit food, setting up my drum kit every night, getting sweaty, nowhere to shower, then driving to the next place. Also, it cost a lot of money upfront and we didn’t make much money on the road. On the flipside I had a lovely house, girlfriend, loved sitting on my computer or my sofa and just enjoying my normal life. Going on the road, definitely isn’t for everyone

I don't think this was a "sacking" as such. More of a mutual departure. Touring is fuckin hard. It looks easy because all we see is the hour n half of a performance and we go back home to the missus & kids. Being stuck on a bus with 3 or 4 other lads, farting, shitting with only one toilet boils down to prison mentality. Throw in the odd addiction nightmare and you have a recipe for disaster. He is still doing music and festivals the way he wants it. Good for him. Seems like a really good bloke.

    • @Unfunny_Username_389

Yep. It can get tough very quickly, especially if audiences are small, and cynical. And the only payment you manage to scrounge covers van hire and diesel. Chuck an unappreciative handful of wankers as an audience and the whole enterprise quickly feels like a tough slog. Up and down the M1 at three in the morning, a four pack of out of date Asda lager on the "rider". And that's the good bit. 😆

It’s always good to see him. He’s not Alex Turner to me, he’s just Al’. My mate I went to school with.” A lovely guy. He was as you say almost Zen like and held no bitterness (link in reply below).

Cool concept for a channel. I think you need to work on delivery of the script, and cutting that audio in post. The quality of the sound isn't quite right, but you can fix that for free in Adobe Audio Enhancer. If you can afford a better mic, that would help enormously too. Lastly, don't be afraid to do multiple takes of the script and break it up into small sections. Good luck!

I agree. I think management probably had a big part in the decision and pressured the rest of the members to take agree to it. Reality is that image can play a huge part in the commercial success of a band. But the guy seemed genuine, was a solid bassist and the album he did is timeless. They did him dirty though in my opinion. I can't imagine the pain he felt too, just watching this band blow up into the stratosphere success-wise. Would they have achieved the same success if he was still in the band? Who knows...

These guys can dick around all they like and then when they want to get clean they can just toddle off to some tropical paradise for a couple weeks. Then go live at the second or third home so you are out of the orbit of the users you were hanging around with before. Try doing that when you're on the dole and living on some council estate. Life is just a playground for these people. An H addiction that many would never recover from is merely a speedbump for them. A roll around in the dirt with the peasants, some cheap thrills.
