Hi Ms Gering. Great video! I am just getting started with pastels using Grumbacher Watercolor paper 300gsm and practicing with Faber-Castell Creative Studio mini pastel sticks 72 pack. I am going to order Blick Artists' Soft pastel sets soon, maybe the 140 set (80 1/2 sticks and 60 full sticks) to see which colors I'll need the most for my project. My question is, what are the drawbacks of using 300gsm watercolor paper cold press with pastels. I'm guessing that since I am brand new beginner, I won't know the difference between quality regarding my lack of experience and there actually being a problem with the paper I'm using... Thank you!
Thank you for the video, that was fantastic!
I am so glad to hear you liked it. Thank you very much!
@@artbyrachelgering Hi Rachel. Is this also a forum for Q&A? Such as, what is your opinion on Faber-Castell Goldfaber Studio Soft Pastels - 72 pack? (I'm very new! I've read or heard that Faber-Castell is very consistent of colors across their products, and their 72-pack soft pastel sticks is only $20-$25... so I thought to start there.) Thank you!
Oh, I don't mean to assume you have time to answer specific questions like this, is why I'm asking if it's alright. If you don't, I totally understand..
Hi! I am always happy to answer any questions. Faber-Castell is a great place to start. The colors are rich, and on the right paper they are very blend able. They are on the harder side of the pastel family, but they still work great.
@@artbyrachelgering Hi Rachel! I was wondering if you have painted with pastel sticks like watercolors? Is it possible wet pastels are a little transparent when water is added, yet remain more lightfast than regular watercolor paints? Oh, and wishing you a wonderful 2025!
I wish I was as talented as you.
Practice makes perfect!
Question: can I draw on top of a dry watercolor wash with watercolor pencils? If yes, can I apply water along the pencil lines and would it reactivate the wash, messy, etc? thank you!
Excellent question! You can absolutely draw on top of dry watercolor washes with actually any type of pencil including watercolor pencils. Now some watercolors will reactivate with water and lift off the surface again. However, not all of them. For example, if you use ultramarine blue as a wash, it most likely will not come up when water is reapplied. Any washes that reactivate will only slightly come up, so most of the time they won’t create any kind of muddiness. Let me know if that helps!
Hi Ms Gering. I really enjoy your videos. Your presentation is great, easy to follow, and I am learning a lot. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I love teaching!
I discovered your channel today and I'm really learning a lot, thank you!
I’m so glad you found my channel! I have many more videos to come! Hopefully this week I will get to post some full length follow along tutorials as well!
Nice video! Questions, so when any two complementary colors are mixed the result is brown? yet, white and black make gray? And, mixing all colors or the primary colors results in black? How is white color produced/made? Ty.
Good questions: So, if pure pigments existed, when two complement mix they would actually turn a neutral gray. Unfortunately pure pigments don't exist so it that is why you get some sort of brown. You can make black by mixing colors together, but it won't be pure black. It will either be warm almost black (reddish), or cool almost black (blueish). The science behind it just states that all of the primary colors mixed together absorbs all the wave lengths of light giving us black. White paint is made out of one of two types of pigment: Zinc oxide or Titanium Dioxide. These pigments are mixed with a binder, like linseed oil, and that turns them into paint. White pigment scatters light in all directions which our eyes perceive as white.
this is a great video. thank you!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️

I sure could use advice on a problem I discovered with a water color that was in storage.
I'd be happy to help. What is the problem?
@@artbyrachelgering I have some mounting tape stuck on the front side of the picture in 2 locations.
@@maryvanryn2504 Oh boy, I hate when that happens. Here's my tips and tricks: I find using a high heat hairdryer a great way to loosen the adhesive. It may take several pass to loosen fully. Then with fingers or tweezers gently pull up the edges. Just be careful as it can make the paper and tape extremely hot. If that doesn't work, I have used a straight hardware razor blade (you can get from any hardware store, some craft store, or amazon), and I gently work my way around the edges of the tape. It's a kind of scraping motion. Just note that this can bring up some of the paper. However, you can also use the hairdryer first, and then the blade second. I have heard of people using water, but I would avoid this if you can, as it can remove or damage the image. I truly hope this helps, and if you need any more help don't hesitate to reach out again!
@@artbyrachelgering Thank you. I'll try the hair dryer and let you know how it works.
I have to be at the airport for you 😊

Game changer!
@@clairtralles4300 right?!?☺️
So when the rags are dry after letting them stay flat and dry in a safe metal container, they are then safe to throw in regular trash? That’s the part I'm confused about.
Great question!! Yes, once they are full dry you can throw them away in a regular trash can.☺️
Beautiful! 🤩
Thank you very much ❤️😁
Bro needs more subs. I can’t believe that this beautiful art is not being seen!😊
Awe thanks!! I love it when people find my art ☺️!!
Love your work! Got your RUclips channel from your Aunt!!! ❤
Awe thank you!!! ❤️
Incredible depth!!
Thank you!! ❤️ my favorite thing about painting is making it look like a real space. And with landscapes, it’s all about depth!
Hello, I just used the gum tape for the first time. The board I used was made out of plastic and it curved as the paper started to dry. What kind of word are you using? Thank you.
Hi, thank you so much for reaching out! I use a Styrofoam board called a gator board. Gator boards are extremely rigid and handles water really well. The only downside is they can be a little bit pricey. An alternative, is to stretch paper on glass. Just know that the drying time might be longer.
Nice😊😊😊😊❤🎉
Thank you very much ❤️😁❤️
That should go in a museum
Awe thank you very much ❤️
Could...could you do a Bob Ross like video? The painting hit my soul
I am hoping to in the near future!! I love teaching art, so keep your eyes peeled. I am hoping to post it in April☺️

Bob Ross would be proud 😅😅
Thank you!!! He inspired me to start painting when I was little 🥰
@artbyrachelgering Bob was also a marketing genius... you know that for every painting done on TV there were a total of 3 done....1 to develop the idea, 1 to complete a finished sample and the 1 done live on the show ..... Bob kept every one of the paintings... a legacy for his family
@@gryphonstudio1969 wow that is amazing. I did not know that!!
