Restoring The WORST Cowboy Skillet Ever?!
Просмотров 1 тыс.Год назад
Come along with me as I take on the challenge of restoring a difficult vintage cowboy skillet that's seen better days. This Deluxe #44 skillet is caked in years of built up gunk and rust UNDER SPRAY PAINT, that will take some serious elbow grease to remove. In this restoration video, I'll show you my process for getting this skillet back to a usable cooking condition. First, I tackle the thick ...

Wanted this to be a short but the vertical formatting is terrible. Anyway, picked myself up a 40lb black hunter longbow with the goal of being good enough to hunt next year. Runs about 43lbs with my draw and I’m able to hit the cardboard box most of the time from 20-30 yards. Looking forward to getting better. Leave what your setup is in the comments!

Joker Campero VS Morakniv Bushcraft Review
You have those Lunas adjustments way wrong.
I’m trying to use my apartment to practice and learn so when I get my spot I’ll be ready
Great idea! I’m finally a homeowner and some skills are brought over on a larger scale and now some new ones! One of the things I wish I did more was gardening on my balcony so I’d be more ready for my yard.
@ that’s what I’m doing trying to garden in raised beds and work on 0 waste cooking, as well as learning how to can
Joker poker
Homer Simpson drives a Canyonero
All you had to do was put the pan in a camp fire and in 20 minutes it would of burned off all the paint, wash it and put oil on it, done in 45 minutes.
@@brianwright8600 yep. Learned that about two days later. Two days too late haha. I have a house now though with a primitive firepit in the backyard for next time :)
use old pill bottels for water proof stuff

Ummm....... you have a co2 alarm right?
@@commonsense.1014 yes but I’m not worried about it because I’m not in an enclosed space like a car but rather my whole house with open windows
Wow dude excellent video! You should produce a movie with this subject
Thanks! Definitely want to get more content on this channel. I have another RUclips Adam Prout that was the focus this past year but I’m going to be doing more this year on here!
Omg im 8 months late. You clean it off like cast iron. That is NOT spray paint, thats AGE, YEARS OF COOKING!!! Just a can of real YELLOW CAP EASY OFF, sprayed well, & a plastic bag well covered. Repeat as necessary. NO PAINT STRIPPER friend. After all cleaned off, soak in a vinegar & water solution & like brand new. Good luck friend.

Use the sizing cutouts on their website don't just buy a size. I'm a 10.5 in most shoes and a 9 in z-trek
Nice video man
Thanks!
What bow is that?
Black Hunter!
Very cool channel! You are just all kinds of interesting. Love the zoolander joke lol
What's the little grate you use to put your pot on? I need one for my backpack about this size
It came with the stove. Can’t recall the brand but I got it on Amazon a couple years back. They should all have a similar size and breakdown setup. 🎉
A little more done than I like. Next time I won’t have em over the coals directly
I wouldn’t put a stove and its fuel in an INCH bag. I’d put that in a BOB. Put stuff in your INCH kit that doesn’t need resupplied. Put a hobo stove in your kit instead. Wood is an abundant fuel source.
Nice review. I’m curious about the Z-trails and Z-treks and how you can walk over a round rock and not slip. I received both types and find that the middle of the sole and the entire toe part and even part of the sole under the ball of the feet are a non-grippy plastic type of material. I’m trying to decide if I keep them because I’m really concerned about using them on trails with rocks and boulders, and even more so if they’re slick with rain or dew. I’d like to find sandals I can use in my canoe and on the portages and often I’d be going over boulders and rocks, and dirt and mud. Interested in your thoughts on this.
Hey @denise check out this video I did in them in the treacherous Appalachian like environment, They did amazing on rocks. The only weakness they have is getting wet. Your feet slide out of them once they're wet! ruclips.net/video/4_pz0N3Svg0/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Isn’t that fire to big? So it could damage the tent? With the sparks? 😬😬
I believe the Tentipis have flame retardant materials because they're designed to have a fire inside them. I have since sold it but it was never a problem for me :)
Keep up the work ❤
🙏
I’m getting my Campero and my Nomad tomorrow 😊they might be good, but beautiful, for sure..
So question when doing all that stuff with your cook and drink stuff do you have the ability to clean it properly so you don’t get sick? CANTENBURY is a fake survivalist. Making punk wood char excretes certain gases that will line your canteen that can become toxic. It doesn’t matter on the amount of water. Try using a 64 ounce canteen with your so called pathfinder set up instead a water bladder, if your concerned about weight. Now you can carry the sos bars. What CANTENBURY does not teach is that your winter and summer has to be one set up for bugout purposes!!! When the SHTF situation occurs you don’t know how long your going to be out there, so both summer and winter gear has to be pack. You can use a dolly system to carry the rest behind you. He’s doing something that military personnel are trained to utilize and said he fake his military stuff…, so do you believe a person who fake his stuff on national TV? And still faking his stuff by taking our old FSM manuals and teaching survival.., most of those manuals are designed for different regions and not your location. Just some FYI SEMPER FI
99.999999% of all Mora reviews have them coming out of the package sharp as the devil. In fact, yours is the only review I've ever seen that claimed otherwise. But, looking at your display of carving, it looks like even your Joker is kinda dull. Something wrong with this picture. Plus, the Mora Bushcraft has a version (about $10-more) that has the ferro-rod, and a diamond sharpener mounted on the sheath. Otherwise, the Joker does appear a fine knife though.
I'm assuming that you have (or will have) a BOL (Bug out location) or two to go to! You should also consider hiding/burying small caches for resupply: food, medical supplies, etc. I didn't catch whether you were planning to carry a firearm or not. If you are I would suggest that you consider a .22LR rifle like a Ruger 10/22. With BX25 magazines and a 500 round brick of rounds this should last you a potentially very long time. You are much more likely to see/harvest small game as any larger game such as deer (even a 60 pound dressed white tail) is a lot of meat and unless you have the experience, time and storage area to properly process it most of it will go to waste or to the scavengers! Anyone who thinks that .22LR is not good enough for self-defense has never been shot by a .22LR (or three) or probably anything! I would add more food to your INCH bag because unless your BOL is pretty close you will need the calories. I like jerky but adding nut and fruit trail mix will give you more energy! Personally, I would replace the hammock with a small tent (micro-climate) and add a sleeping bag because sleep is very important both physically and mentally and I roll around a lot in my sleep. I would add some all-metal mouse and rat traps to your hunting tin as rodents (including squirrels) are usually plentiful in the woods! A little peanut butter makes good bait! A very good fire starter (even with damp twigs) is a tea light candle with a half of a cotton ball melted into it; they will burn about 30 minutes with a 3" flame. Placing one under a suspended tin can will help take the chill off a really cold night!
JFYI, you do not need a 100% wool blanket or spend a lot of money, an 80/20 or 70/30 5-6lbs (even if it was as low as 50/50 would be fine) I bought from Swiss Link brand back when they still had the slightly heavier weight blankets and they were about $40, I bought two , a classic Charcoal 80/20 5lb and a heavy weight swiss army replica 6lb 70/30...don't let anyone tell you they have to be 100% or $200 or else they wont work.
Hello Sir, Two years in, are you still using the campero? I have some issues with joker quality
I am not! I use a couple of Mora's and Matt Grahams Condor Primitive Bush Mondo. The only reason I stopped is because I can sharpen Mora'sscandi grind on my wet stone fine, but ruined the Jokers edge because it's convex.
I recently purchased the Campero with the olive wood handle. Razor sharp. Fit and finish not perfect on the handle. Some glue remnants in the liners and tang is not seamless like my Lynx. mine also does not say by J Sabater on the blade. What do you make of that?
I received a Monteñero with no J. Sabatier either on the blade. What is that all about too???
For what it's worth, if you need to get paint off of steel/iron like this it's so much easier to use a sand/bead/media blaster instead. Quick work. Your local welding shop you have one and probably wont charge much for something this small.
Definitely needed more power right off the bat for sure. wishing I had gone in with power tools right away. I did see a cool video today where the guy coated it in paint stripper and then put it in the fire after 15 mins. Seemed to crackle right off and he washed it with baking soda and water and it was as good as new. Of course he had his own fire pit in his backyard.
I can just imagine what a welding shop would charge to media blast an old pan. “Yeah you’re lookin’ at 2-3 hours, at a base rate of $160. Plus we gotta order in special media cause it’s not the type of metal we work with day to day. It’s gonna be $569, we’ll have it ready by the spring, hopefully.
I mean if that's how they're gonna be they don't need your money. Sorry you've had bad experiences. My local place would probably do it for under 50. They also run theirs on large stuff at least 5 times a month so doing 3-4 minutes on a pan is nothing to them.@@patusher77
Not sure what metal is but when i clean cast iron pans, I heat them up super hot with a torch or a fire, once it cools its easy to sand off rust or whatever may have been on it, then soap and water, then oil and heat. cool looking pan you got there.
For sure. Similar process with Cowboy Skillets normally but they are steel. This one was extra tough because of the spray paint binding with the rust. Eventually got it figured out though. Fun! These are super lightweight. Like a tin pretty much. Really good to chuck on coals on the ground. Super light to strap to your backpack. Collectors items for sure. People restore these from antique shops and resell on Etsy for like 50-75 bucks.
I made the mistake of hitting my with a sink of room temp water right out of the fire thinking the rapid shrinking would knock the century of rust off. Damn pan split in half with a comical lighting bolt pattern.
@@FeedMeSalt dang! haha
100% burn it off. Never put chemicals on anything you're going to be cooking on.
@@timfrye9147 Yup for sure. I have a camp trip this weekend and its going into the fire to get any last bits off
I had a pair of the Xero sandals and was in camp standing on slightly uneven ground and the next thing I know is that the strap snapped off of one of the sandals. It was a really new pair. I asked myself what the heck would have happened if I was running in them. I love Xero shoes and boots but lost all confidence in the sandals. The strap attachment point on the souls of the sandals seems awful weak.
Better be in good shape that bag is heavy
Thanks for the comparison as i was eyeballing a campero, and already have a bushcraft black which is my favorite knife
Joker Campero > Mora Bushcraft
I own many Jokers and a couple moras. Moras are solid tools but the jokers just come more complete with more premium materials. Way better sheath, full tang, huge range of knife designs that will suit anyone’s needs, nice steel and heat treat. Can’t go wrong with either of these companies at the end of the day. For super tight budgets there is nothing wrong with a mora companion
Good video! The Billy can and Pathfinder bottle looked ENORMOUS for some reason until you picked them up. 😂
Great video don’t hear many using the water ways. It was the old byways and train routs can care more gear less effort. My plan is by canoe 🛶 same thing really.
Awesome. I would love one of those ultralight canoes from Swift or somewhere but dang, so expensive.
@@EverydayDudeSurvival yeah I was looking at them too for backcountry camping but wow $4,000 to over $5,000 just can’t justify it 🥲 at this point
If you write to Mora online they will possibly send you a new knife as all of them are usually razor sharp. Or maybe that paper was very thin. The Mora sheaths can be heated and remolded simply to fit better if coming loose. Hot water or hairdryer.
nice shot!
i really like how my Joker Campero but My Morakniv Bushcraft just seems to cut finer out of the box
It was the opposite for me, but now it seems like I enjoy the Bushcraft black better. Much easier to maintain and sharpen.
@EverydayDudeSurvival Update!! I enjoy my Joker Campero, it's my favorite knife so far..Out of the Campero, Morakniv, a Custom and a Kershaw.
I can't do anything in between my toes. But I also cannot run much. I used to give barefoot 95% if the time. Then I moved to the city and my feet are wrecked!
i carry a state map with 4 topo maps dont know shtf is gonna hit . i carry vaseline . multi use burns fire chap skin etc . first aid kit have added nail clippers Q tips . food 3 oatmeal packages 2-3 tuna or chicken packages 3-4 mre s main course canteen cup for cooking etc . fishing kit small caliber rifle for small game small bottle of foot powder . 35+ years camping/hiking etc had no use for fix blade knife axe/hacket cooking pot dont carry anymore . dont have a bug out location dont know where shtf going to hit 5 tent stakes for shelter ideas
I like the round tin snare kit idea.
Nice video. I’ve been wearing Xero shoes forever, and theZ-Trail has been my go to sandal for running, and trail running for a few years. I started with the original Z-Trail, wore those out and am about to retire my second pair, which are the 2nd edition, with a sturdier strap. I’ve run up to 19 miles on technical, gnarly trails (Shawangunk Ridge Trail, Breakneck point, Bear Mountain areas in NYS.) and did 14 miles in a continual downpour which was rough. The tread isn’t as sturdy on wet rocks and mud as I’d like (but it’s more a speed issue. If I’m going slow and easy, they’re fine.). They have lasted about a year, they are still decent, but that little layer of foam has compressed, and bombing down the ski slopes at full speed now tenderizes my feet. The grey treads aren’t really durable. For some reason, they’re softer material than the black part of the tread and have worn out. And I do have to occasionally adjust them on long, hard runs, I usually like them a little loose, but have to tighten them on the downhills.. They’re still ok for shorter, or slower runs, and I do also wear them for road running, which tears apart the treads. While I have not tried the Z-trek sandals, I do have a pair of Jessie sandals what I wear for everyday out and about. They are similar depth sole as the Z-trek, and I have done track workouts in them. Talk about instant feedback on bad form! But as I’m training for ultras, on the same technical ankle-breakers, I have purchased a pair of Luna Middle Bear sandals and will see how badly the strap between the toes bothers me. Again, thanks for the comparisons.
This is an awesome comment!!! I sound exactly the same. I’ve only had the Z Trails a few weeks but have used them a lot in pavement and hard surfaces and the foam tread has taken a real battering, I’m really disappointed so just going to use them for trail now. And again, just like you, I’m going to get some Lunas to tackle ultramarathons in as I just need/want that extra cushioning under my feet.
Thank you for the review. I'm still trying to decide which sandal to buy. I'll probably go with the Xero. ❤
I’m very pleased with them to this day. The Luna’s are very well made but a bit too clunky for me and I hate the toe saw! Lol
That's so funny. Toe saw. Never quite thought of it like that. I have a Xero boot. I love them. Still can't decide between the z and the aqua sandal.
So a year later what’s your opinion now ? Also wondering what knife do you use now?
That is a great question. Very wise person. I do find myself using the mora a lot more than the joker because the scandi grind is far easier for me to sharpen than the convex grind which I’ve managed to make dull. My favorite knife to use now that I’m more versed in using various kinds out in the field is the Matt Graham knife by Condor called primitive bush mondo. It combines my need from a knife, hatchet, and machete all into one knife. It’s an excellent fire starter, chopper, game processor, and carver. It also has a strange grind though so I try to hone it after every use to avoid having to sharpen it and risk dulling it.
@@AdamProut thanks I always like to hear how people progress. Things we think are important actually change when we are outdoors doing stuff. It's usually different then what you first thought. At least thats been what it's like for me. I have a mora Garberg and a 13 coldsteel tanto machete. As far as sharpening I use a harbor freight 1x30 belt grinder. It's like $50 then Amazon has belts for $20 you can even get a leather belt. It was my best investment. Just start on junk knifes. For outdoors Sharpal it's amazing I believe it's $29 right now. At least thats what Amazon just said. This is a sharpener for people just getting started. I think that will help you get to the next level. Have a good one thanks for the reply.
