Marshall Valvestate Head Repair
A new customer brought this by not too long ago. I don't usually work on solid state electronics but I told him I would try my best. Then, I immediately found the issue! I guess I shouldn't sell myself short. In any case, I was able to fix the amp and the customer seemed happy with how it turned out!

JCM 900 Pot Replacement Part 1
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.7 лет назад
For all guitar and tube amp repair/mod needs, contact Mike at Ballinger Amplification. Serving northern Illinois and south eastern Wisconsin. www.ballingeramps.com This JCM 900 had a bad pot controlling the channel A gain. Tried cleaning, didn't help, so it's time to replace it! This is just the removal. Amp is owned by Josh Sukowski of Dead By Friday. Music by Dead By Friday.
Would uou recomend putting some potting around the caps so they dont move under vibration.
Potting? Like a resin? I'm not sure I've heard the term before. I typically use silicone. OR if it's really that much of an issue, they sell mounting brackets. however that would require drilling holes into the chassis to mount said brackets. But they definitely don't let the capacitors move at all.
Nice video, i like those fender amps a lot, i dream one day ill be able to get a blackface twin reverb
Thanks! I prefer The black face Bassman myself but the old twin reverbs are also amazing. Appreciate the compliment!
If only you were closer! If you're in the Plainfield area you're welcome to come and try out anything I currently got on the bench or in my collection😆💕
Where in Chicago are you? I need an amp tech lol
So I’m not in the city itself. I live in the far north suburbs. Kinda by Six Flags. My website and Facebook have my business info if you’d like to set something up! ballingeramplification.com
I HAVE 0NE 0F THESE, THE 0D2 CHANNEL CRUSHES F0R TIGHT SATURATED M0DERN METAL, STATIC-X AND PR0NG USED THESE...
Nice! I have a small practice amp Combo version of the Valvestate. I can definitely see these amps pulling of that crazy high gain sound.
Yup that’s pretty much what it’s doing. Although I never tried to take out the tube and play the amp. I own one of these as well. It’s the combo version of this. I use it as a practice amp now. I did notice that when I changed the tube in mine it didn’t sound any different. In my view, these are just normal solid state amps with a gimmick.
I used to have that model….the tube is being used as a diode. You can even remove it from the circuit and the tone doesn’t change
They also have notorious issues with bad solder joints cracking. Same as all the JCM 800-900 amps. My little practice one needed to be fixed so many times eventually I just changed a bunch of stuff so it would stop happening. Like using wired pots rather than the ones that mount directly to PCB.
If you have twitter or instagram hit me up in my DMs. I actually have a good story about this one but I don’t wanna share it publicly. @Mikeballingerx on twitter Actionmike2077 or Ballingeramplification for Instagram
You may be thinking about the earlier 8100 valvestate which the vs100 replaced...the tube in the 8100 only works on the od channel, whereas the tube even works on the clean channel on these vs100's...I replaced the stock ecc83 in mine with an older groove tubes 7025 and saw a big improvement in both tone and background noise
It's always nice to come across another Amp tech channel. All I need now is a qualified amp tech near Greenville, NC. Beautiful Twin, and I enjoyed your video with a couple of exceptions. I don't enjoy background music or fast forward segments. But then, I'm a retired old fart. Best wishes.
Thank you! I hope you're able to find a good tech in your area soon.
Any reason you did not replace the white eletrolytic pre amp cathode bi pass caps? They usually get replaced when restoring these older amps. Really made a difference in a few of my amps.
Hey! Yeah good question and good eye! I recommended it to the customer. I recommended many more things actually. I usually replace several more caps than what’s shown. However the customer wasn’t willing to have that additional work done. So with this amp, I stuck to exactly what he saw as important. And considering he initially only brought it in for the reverb problem, I’m glad he listened to my advice for the rest of the work. Particularly with that scary power cord.
@@ballingeramplification1872 That makes total sense. You can only do what they are willing to allow and or pay for. Lucky for me I don’t currently have to worry about customers, just me restoring my own amps or my brothers. I really gave the works to my brothers 1967 Dual Showman, it totally needed it too. I posted a video on the Dual Showman and plan to post a few more of the amps I am currently working on. I currently just finished up a 1968 Super Reverb and am almost done overhauling a 1976 Twin Reverb. Also nice shout out to Colleen of Fazio in your video. I am a fan of hers as well.
@@Zelleram55 oh that sounds rad! Yeah as of right now I don’t mind my customers. They pay the bills lol. But I’m slowly gathering a vintage collection to refurbish myself. I’ll check out your videos. Yeah Colleen is the best! I found her channel a while back, and then We met last year. She helped me out a ton on this one when I got lost in the schematics.
"Promosm" 🎶
Those 900’s are known for pot replacement, it’s a thing.
yeah, it's a real pain.
Nice! I have a plan to buy this 10-way Freeway switch for SSS Strat. I have tried Dan Armstrong mod and love the sound of single-coil pickups in series. BTW, does your guitar hum in series mode? My guitar hums in series mode if my bare feet contact the ground, otherwise not. My guitar is shielded so it does not hum in standard Strat wiring. Thanks for the video!
Would you please post dimensions of the 10-way switch? Thanks a lot.
@@nhchau Hey this is Mike, answering from my personal account! So this isn’t my guitar but while I had it, it only hummed a little on the “normal” bridge pickup setting. As far as dimensions, I’d have to look for the client records to see what they ordered (he brought me that switch I didn’t order it myself) BUT I do know it has to be the dimensions of a standard Stratocaster switch because it fit perfectly. In fact that client had me do the same modification to a American stratacaster, and that one dropped in just as easily! Hope that helps. Mike-Ballinger Amplification
PRO TIP for board mounted components......snip the pot off from the three terminals. Then you can easily remove each pin one by one. Works so much better and has less potential of overheating the board.
I've actually adopted this method since the video was posted! thanks! I was kinda just starting out back then. i knew enough to not get shocked but the experience I've had since then has been SO helpful. Thanks for your feedback!
@@ballingeramplification1872 That is awesome to hear, man!
Late to the party here but just a question - I have a JCM 900 4500 (50 dual reverb) - at times, my gain/volume can drop by a fair bit (specifically in channel B) and putting pressure on one of the tone knobs resolves this - could this potentially be a faulty pot somewhere?
im so sorry im not so active on this channel! I just started using it again. Usually gain and volume drop is due to the tubes starting to go bad. the tone knob thing is interesting though. that makes me think there are some bad solder joints somewhere but honestly its hard to know without seeing inside.
I need to remove the amp at a marshall jcm 900 COMBO. After removing the 4 upper screws I can’t do it. Any suggestion? Thanks a lot ( nachoworldguitar@gmail.com)
Man I really do like a fine tuned 900. What could be better in your opinion?
only a modded JCM 800 hahaha. I love how the 800 sounds over the 900. But i tend to tweak them depending on the exact model.
Nice vid but you should really use solder braid to desolder as it reduces the chance of burning off the traces..
Gerrit Koerselman What Size pot? 50k or 100k? Please help me
Which amp model, there are 3 JCM 900 models (MKIII, SL-X and DR) and they have different pots/values
