Ravel: Jeux D'eau
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 года назад
Music at 4:12 Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) composed Jeux D'eau in 1901, while he was still a student of Gabriel Faure. In the piece, one can hear Ravel exploring the sounds of Impressionism and finding his voice through his harmonies and approach to the color that the piano can achieve. This awareness of color and sound helps to bring the idea of "playing water" to life. On top of the score, Ravel...
Weaver: Romances for Oboe and Piano
Просмотров 2533 года назад
I first had the pleasure of performing Robert Schumann’s Romanzen, Op. 94 with Izumi Sakamoto in the spring of 2018. Immediately after hearing her performance of the work I wanted to set out on composing a set of my own romances for Izumi, loosely based on the work of Robert Schumann. Thanks to the support of New England Chamber Players, it was finally possible to bring this new work to life....

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote the four pieces of Klavierstücke, Op. 119 in 1892 and 1893 alongside of other sets for solo piano including Op. 116, 117, and 118. Before this time, Brahms returned to a life in composition after hearing Richard Mühlfeld, a clarinetist, that inspired him to write a number of great works involving the clarinet. This renewed energy for Brahms led to some of his g...
Webern - Variations for Piano, Op. 27 (Thomas Weaver, piano)
Просмотров 2403 года назад
Anton Webern (1883-1945) wrote his Variations for Piano during 1935 and 1936. A member of the Second Viennese School, along with Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, Webern spent most of his life writing in an atonal style and exploring the possibilities of twelve-tone serial composition. In this piece, in addition to his use of rows, Webern creates symmetrical structures to help construct phrases...

Просмотров 8994 года назад
Robert Schumann (1810-1856) wrote his famous song "Widmung" or "Dedication" in 1840 as a part of the set Myrthen, Op. 25. The composer evokes thoughts of his beloved, the brilliant pianist and composer Clara Wieck-Schumann (1819-1896) through his music and the use of Friedrich Rückert's (1788-1866) text. The text for the poem can be found below. In his music, Schumann takes care to highlight pa...

Alexander Arutiunian (1920-2012) wrote his Polyphonic Sonata while studying with Genrikh Litinsky in Moscow. Litinsky believed strict counterpoint to be the "alpha and omega" of polyphony. Arutiunian's skill as a contrapuntal composer is showcased throughout this exciting sonata. I. Lento - Invenzia 2:48 The first movement, after the dramatic introduction is an Invention, clearly drawing its in...
