Observationist Dave
Добавлен 17 июн 2022
Thank you for stopping. I'm Dave, and despite maintaining a 40 hour job outside the home, I still dream of my own homestead. My wife and I bought two acres about 10 years ago and I've spent that time first honing my garden skills, then more recently starting an apiary, and now a small flock of hens. There's plenty I know, and plenty more that I don't. I'll be posting mostly shorts that highlight tips or money/time/effort saving tips that I found or worked through myself. I hope you hang around and enjoy. Thank you again and enjoy.

Two spike bucks trailing one another

The first buck, notice his left antler (a spike in this case) is broken off and ragged. With the rut having just finished, it's likely this happened sparring with a larger buck. An antler breaking off this time of year causes them no pain, but sparring with other bucks certainly can cause other serious injuries. #homestead #deer #whitetaildeer #deerlife #deerhunting

you can throw in a few handfuls of wheat for them to go inside. Happy new year
Yeah sometimes they'll go for oats as well. They weren't ready so I didn't want to push them.

Foxes. We need more Foxes. Cant have enough foxes.
@daunas124 I keep chickens so I'm not sure I agree 100% on that😆
@observationistdave farmers may not like them but I can't resist loving these fluffy little guys
@daunas124 as long as they stay away from my chickens, we are good. I try not to tempt the foxes by leaving the birds out all day long
hi Dave :D
@@Pokynhh3 Hello!
You did a great job ! Mine would have been a whole lot worse..lol ❤
@@cozycottagehomestead I'd like to get an actual video camera instead of my phone, but you know how that goes.
Sorry for the shaky camera. Filming zoomed with just a phone, while avoiding being seen and heard, isn't always the easiest. Hope you enjoy.
Beautiful Doe...Waiting for that Buck ?...happy hunting ❤
@cozycottagehomestead I got a large doe on Tuesday. That means the pressure is off and I am sitting, waiting for something else big, and really just spending some time decompressing in solitude.
The bulk of a whitetail deer's brain is devoted to their olfactory sense. They teust it implicitly. Even so you notice, since she didnt confirm my exact location, she onky sprinteda bit. They know that blindly running can land them in danger as well so she just distanced herself, then went back to browsing
Thanks Dave, speedy recovry.
@ColoradoKrone thank you very much! I'm getting better everyday!
What zone are you and what variety of fig is this?
@@thatguychris5654 Zone 7b, they're Brown Turkey Figs
Is the rooster an Australorp? I inherited one just like that and couldn't positively identify him.
@thatguychris5654 He was gifted to me as well but I do believe he is
Little bit of something is better than nothing at all 👍 Good to see your getting back to it after surgery 😊
@cozycottagehomestead thank you! I need to catch up on so many other creator videos, including yours.
Reminder that sweet potatoes are not members of the nightshade family and the greens can be fed to chickens. White potatoes, along with pepper, tomato, and eggplant greens, cannot be fed to chickens as they are poisonous
Is that a doe? Or just a youngin'? 🦌
@@redfeathersoundstudio Both😊
I noted on the video giving scratch feed at night. To be clear I mean late afternoon or evening for the birds before going in to roost.
Beautiful chicken breeds
@@BIRDS360 thank you so much!
We have a large fox population locally due to wealthy families like the DuPont's importing them for sport, prior to that our peninsula had no fox. Most now are descendant from them.
I didn't know that about them being imported! Interesting.
Oh cool! Which peninsula? Greetings from Denmark!
@redfeathersoundstudio Farmers were very upset about it at the time.
@theblackphoenix2135 Greetings! The Delmarva Peninsula which is bordered on the west by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. We're in the States, Maryland

@087redcore thank you! She's very pretty but def has a sassy attitude all the time 🤣
Wow most beautiful chicken laying egg
Super cute ❤
@AlexJones-vq5dm thank you!
I'm in zone 8, my dumb-butts are still trying to rob each other.
@echthroi9 I'm Zone 7. I found the best way to stop the robbing, bc mine were doing it too several weeks ago, is to reduce entrances and put out an external feeding station. I have several videos showing this with 5 gallon buckets. Once free forage is available they will be far less inclined to fight for someone else's reserves. Good luck!
@@observationistdave I'll give it a shot, thanks!
Just look at that , chickens are the most beautiful creatures In the world , there like deinonychus or velociraptor dinosaur

Hello Dave,
@@KajunHomestead Hello!
I have similar set up.. 1 50 gal plastic drum.. I built the platform out of cinder blocks, filled em in with sand.. no problems yet, fingers crossed
@kennycook-uy8hv I considered cinder block, but I had these big treated pieces in hand. The stand itself has done well this summer, I just didn't put in enough diligence on the underneath. Hopefully this will remedy it.
Big old angry floof.
@raideurng2508 some don't mind you reaching under them, but she is very much against it🤣

I planted Music for the first time this year.😊. Happy to see how we both die come spring.
@ckkentfield this is my first time planting this variety as well
I didn't mention it, but always place twigs, branches, or other floating blocks in a feeder like this to provide space for the bees to land. Simply left in a bucket like this the honeybees will just dive bomb in, resulting in massive deaths from drowning. Matted straw, small wooden blocks, branches, and the like will work well. Take care everyone!
If you're new to planting garlic, I forgot to say they go in the ground pointed side up and flat base down. Take care everyone! Garlic from: Matthew and Carissa (screwed that up on the video😂) LittleWayHomestead.com
