Hi! I’m Jasmin in the United States and I've been sculpting headwear for over three decades. I also upcycle reclaimed wool sweaters into hats and clothing.
In this channel, I show you how I make sculptural hats to decorate and protect the cranium in the form of cloches, helmets, and other fun shapes from the eco friendly materials of fish leather, handwoven straws, wool felt and upcycled wool. I also share tips, techniques and hacks to make your live with hats easier and more fun.
Kat Von D, Erykah Badu, Neil Young, and Tom Waits have bought my hats. Also, Bjork and Nick Cave have one!
I also teach millinery workshops. I taught millinery in the fashion department as an adjunct professor in New York City at the Parsons School of Design for 3 1/2 years.

Anti-moth your sweaters! #mothprevention
I always freeze vintage wool sweaters that I get from thrift stores or online for one to two weeks before washing or dry cleaning and you should too. Why? Because it’s the eggs/larvae laid by female moths, not the tiny flying crittters that cause the damage. The heartbreaking holes you find in your precious cashmere, merino, and lambswool sweaters are devastating.

Perfect glasses!
Thank you! Glad you like them.
Cool hats. Does the fabric have much stretch?
Thank you! Yes it has a lot of stretch but you can felt it in hot water and then it has less stretch. Are you familiar with boiled wool?
Perfect!
Thank you so much! Glad you like them.
Wow, seems you make handmade leather bags. Do you have a shopping website ?
Hi! No, I’m just learning how to make bags. I’m actually a milliner, someone who designs and makes women’s hats. I do have a website for that business. Thanks for being interested!
So cute. Thank you. ☺️
You’re welcome 😊Christine!
The bells remind me of ones I heard at Mont St Michel. Sounds and smells are so evocative. It’s getting colder here in Colorado so I’ll start wearing my cool red hat you made🥳❤️
@@jennytreanor9465 yay! Great to hear you’ll be wearing your red hat soon! I need to go there. I’ve never been. I’ve been doing a lot of audio recordings here, too. I wish more people would record just sound. It’s evocative, like you say!
Thanks! Italy is on our bucket list and definitely Florence!!
You are welcome, Jenny! I was on my way to the Ferragamo museum to see shoes and clothes but got too tired and turned around. I probably should’ve taken a taxi or Uber (taxis work under Uber also).
Yoooo this some “keeping old ways alive” type shit, sick as hellll 🤙
@@MrMochi-nl1zb Thank you so much! Exactly. Natural ingredients!
I’m inspired! What finest place to learn about leather production could there be ?and you’re applying that new knowledge to the handling of fish skin. Thanks for sharing, very interesting!
@@annabelsmart5305 Thanks so much! Yes, Italy is the number one leader in leather production, in my opinion. Thanks for commenting 💕
People want to see how they look. Why don't you try them on or show someone wearing them.
I have been wanting to make that video! Actually, if you check my playlist, you’ll see other pieces that I’m wearing. Thanks for reminding me to make a new video. It will have to wait though. They are all in storage in San Francisco and I am studying in Italy for two months.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for commenting. I’m in Italy now, learning how to make bags!
You can’t beat raw talent, visionary experimentation and ability to deliver!
Thanks so much. I feel like it was my students who has this!
I was in shock when I read the topic! How could you feel like a fraud for doing what you were born to do? Is it the teaching aspect of it that was homogeneous with your purpose? It can't be the qualification aspect because I know that you are more than qualified!
Not to be a victim, but I think it was from parents who constantly compared me to my peers. That can really eat at your self confidence.
Brava! Degrees don’t qualify us - talent, hard work, insight and courage are what is required 🎉
Ah thanks Jenny! I agree 😘💋
You are absolutely worthy!!!
Ahhh Thanks Paula!
#bosslady
Love the hat! Not only do the antenna add an interesting visual detail, they are actually awesome for contacting my people!😅
Thank you! I’m so glad we are in the same mindset. 🧑🚀
You could intentionally give it an uneven tan too!
That’s true! Thanks!
I like to the side as well 😊
Thank you! ☺️
Love this space!
@@mahiraasad7949 Isn’t it amazing?
That’s awesome! Great job! I’ve found The Sewing Doc Academy very helpful as well. Love seeing when they help others out. The community is awesome, too!
Thank you so much! I wish I had offered to buy the machine from the makerspace. The manager ended up buying it.
I hope that brushing fish scales helped with settling for the journey ahead ❤
You are so sweet! Thank you. Yes I just booked my one week Venice accommodation ! I love how you comment consistently on my posts. Do we know each other? 😘
@@JzMillinery your content is irresistible! How not to comment :) Glad to hear your plans are coming together. My worst travel anxiety comes when I’ve not yet made any plans 🩷
@@annabelsmart5305 Ahh that is one of the sweetest compliments ever on my youtube channel. Thank you!
Omg! I want to work there!!!!!!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have more textile makerspaces in the USA?
Wow what a gorgeous.....enjoy making beautiful things you are sooo lucky!!!!
I was so lucky to attend the residency last year. Anyone can attend. Check out their website
Wonderful space
I know! I kind of want to go back just for the Textile makerspace, not the residency program. Thanks for commenting!
Tail up on your ?left side - perfect!although the diagonal placement was -wow
Thanks so much! Now to decide what to line and bind it with.
That’s beautiful!
Thank you so much, Paula! I will take it off of the block today and make a new video!
Is there a shortage of straw hats?
Hmm there is a problem in Ecuador with their fine handwoven (panama) toquilla straw blanks that milliners and hatters use to make their hand blocked hats. No one wants to weave it anymore because computer jobs in the big cities pay way more. It’s so sad for our industry.
How cuteeee
Thanks!
You're in San Diego!?????
@beautoxxbeautoxx San Francisco has an ‘Ocean Beach’ also!
But what is she going to do with the feathers
I actually originally had that revealed in the video but edited it out! Thanks for asking. I’m going to try to gold leaf the feathers with faux gold foil from the Mona Lisa brand and then make fascinators out of them!
You should post a video of how you apply the gold leaf, and let us see how they turn out!
@wearrebel7759 it didn’t work but I bought ‘rub and buff’ and it did! Have you heard of it, Georgia?
❤❤❤❤❤
@@judoforlife I agree! Icelandic horses are lovely. Thanks
Violets and Lupins, plucky pioneers
How about excess moitsure and pealing leather?
Hmm why is there excess moisture? Mold will grow on the leather if you store it in plastic, for sure. Peeling leather may be because it is low quality. Honestly the best place to research this is the internet. I don’t know the answers to your questions.
But seriously, that thing is like your body double!😅
Ha ha thanks so much. I need to make the wooden base flat though. It’s wobbly! More reason to find a makerspace that I love! They must have a robust textile room!
Oh, Jasmin! I'm so happy to see that you found your twin!
Thanks! It will be easier to make clothing for myself now and also take photos of my clothing for sale!
Cool! 👌
@@wearrebel7759 Thanks so much! Have you tried it yet?
So cute and creative!
You are so kind. Love you!
Thank you so much for your video. I loved your process of creating ART from interesting stuff! It works!
Thank you for your compliment! It spurs me to continue.
Thanks for sharing, but can silica gel crystals prevent that?
I really doubt it. Storage in plastic suffocates leathers and wools. I need to research this.
I always wonder what onion skin would look like!
Dyed ? It smells wonderful while boiling the skins. Reminds me of French onion soup. 🇫🇷
😂
that's him!
@@birdthompson indeed! Miss him everyday.
big love
Thank you! I hope to visit France this Fall! Hope we can meet up.
This was beautifully put together and so incredibly touching. The love and creativity your father passed to you echos through this video into my heart and through out the universe, eternally. 💙💙💙
ahh so sweet. Thank you so much! You bring tears to my eyes. Thanks for commenting, fellow traveler! ❤️
What a beautiful record of your papa. ❤
Thank you so much! I shared it with his family as well. Need to make one for my mother, also. She died last July 2023
@JzMillinery that would be wonderful to make one of your mother, too. I’m so sorry to hear of your recent loss. You’ve inspired me to think about putting something together gradually for my parents, even if only a couple of folders. What I really loved was the soundtrack of your father calling you and how it developed. Sound, especially the sound of voice, evokes another sense of a person and their meaning in your life. I love how your father was using a sewing machine and engaged with your work.
@annabelsmart5305 do it! Make some videos also of your parents. I wanted to put a video in of him sewing, but I couldn’t make it work with the Adobe Premier Rush software. I wish I had backed up an external hard drive that failed. Otherwise, I would have even more material! 😘
@@JzMillinery somewhere you have those visuals in your memory :) precious times. Thank you for reminding me about failing hardware, I must open a neglected external drive soon and do something with it.
Yellow and orange will look good too
Oh! Great idea. Thanks!
reddish pink, pinky red
Red is my choice! Thank you!
Will give it a go 🎉
Let me know how it turns out! There are other videos where I show how to drape.
Brilliant
Thanks! ❤
😂
Thanks for finding it humorous
Show us how to make one ❤
I need to do that! Thanks for reminding me. There is one video on my channel of me making a turquoise blue dress, but very quickly. You could always watch it at a slower speed.
