Hi, I'm Jess.
Welcome to my booktube channel and my little online reading spot.
Here you'll find all of the conventional booktube content that we've all come to know and love (book hauls, tbrs, reviews and recommendations, rants and reading vlogs) but mostly, this is the place that I share my reading experiences.
I am interested in challenging myself and others to have conversations about stories and ideas. My desire is to take people beyond the star rating systems we use for books and, instead, share their passion for reading by talking about the books they've enjoyed and, sometimes, those they haven't. So please, join in the conversation!
I'm so happy you're here, thank you for spending this time with me.
xo Jess.

Invisible Man | Ralph Ellison's Groundbreaking Novel

Ralph Ellison's debut novel Invisible Man explores the complex themes of racial justice, racial identity, and the search for one's authentic self. It does all of this with great artistic integrity and ingenuity that was truly groundbreaking in its time. In this video I take a deep dive into the main themes and surrealist approach to the narrative. I also give a bit of background on Ellison's li...

Booktube Prize 2024 | The Fiction Semifinals
Great analysis, thank you! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
How about a gift for me? Forget my uncle! 😂
Such fun with the Readalongs! ❤
That was fun!😁For anyone who likes books about books, try illustrator/author, Jane Mount. Her books make excellent gifts but you’ll want to keep them for yourself. I love her illustrations that accompany the text. I recommend “Bibliophile: An Illustrated Miscellany” (Chronicle Books, 2018) but they’re all good. Caution: You’ll go down a biblio rabbit hole with this one, and your TBR will go mental.📚
This is great! My day of birth is the 16th and I wasn't looking forward to looking through different books to find one ending in a 6. I will read Council of Dolls which my library has. Thanks! Team Nutcracker also!
Hi Jess! Where can we get it? On their website? Any other place in Canada?
@@julieg_quebec-julesselivre8641 They are harder to find here but I found this one: takenotestore.ca/products/hobonichi-2025-planner-weeks-mega-bow-tie
Havent read it since undergrad school (meaning: Ive forgottwn it!) but Ill be buddy reading it again next year. Thanks for this (altho I think that _Ulysses_ is The Greatest novel of all-time 😊)
You have some really great choices on your TBR. I especially love Becky Chambers. I don’t think Remember December will be an event this year partly because Ann Novella was the mastermind behind it and she hadn’t made a video in some time. 😔
I think Ariel put the first question in because she is also a serial book starter, I think she calls it charcuterie board reading, or something like that in her podcast, because she likes to read a little bit of this and a little bit of that😅
Love the festive vibe! 🎄 Of the books you showed: I read Empusium in October; read Orbital too (audiobook); read Hitchhiker's Guide a long time ago and think it's essential reading (otherwise, how would you know to always bring a towel, or what the answer is to "the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything"?) I'm in line for the audiobook Fingersmith (the cockney accent in the sample sounded fun), hope Libby delivers it in December! Visit from the Goon Squad is in my tbr. Maybe that can be my recommended read for December 🦌
Both you and Nola look in the seasonal spirit! I love your enthusiasm for this readathon. 🎄
I really do enjoy doing it each year!
I enjoyed watching Nola select a book for you, and think Nola should be a judge for major prizes such as the Giller, Booker, etc.🐶
Lol - too funny!
I DNFed Martyr! and glad to hear your opinions- to confirm that it wasn't for me😊. Also reading a little luck right now and fully agree with you! Thank you for your videos ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your comment here and for watching my channel! I am a terrible DNF'er so I probably would still have finished Martyr! but it was ultimately such a disappointment...
@stalkingkafka thank you! I used to finish everything I picked up, then I realized that I am doing the book disservice if I am not enjoying it anyway. I tell myself that it isn't for me, right now. I can pick it up again if I want to try in future... and leave it at that. I don't like violence, so I have hard time with books depicting it personally. Thank you- I really enjoy your channel 😊
You have really convinced me to read Doppelganger. Great review.
It's very good!
I'm also interested in a The Books of Jacob readalong.
You know I love your videos and book suggestions, but my favorite part of this video was when Nola came out and considered you. 😂 What a personality he has. ❤
I love looking at beautiful stationery.
I feel like I need to be more intentional about including nonfiction in my reading life. You've intrigued me with many of your options. 🌹
Patrick Radden Keefe is an excellent author. I did enjoy Orwell’s Roses. Lots of great books for you to choose from!
Better late than never! 😅 Hobbies that aren’t books?! I didn’t know those existed 😂 jk it’s cool that you have other stuff you’re getting into. The Coast Road is excellent, so I hope you manage to finish it!
I have volunteered to judge The Booktube Prize after missing a couple of years. Gemma gave me the fomo. I am looking forward to discovering some books, as I have been out of the reading loop. I have All Fours on my radar, but I want to get to some books I own. I get distracted by Everand and my library apps. Enjoy your reading.
I really hope you get to the Becky Chambers, her books are soul food. I’m also keen to try empusium and the most. They sound like a bit of me.
I think I could be up for a Books of Jacob readalong - just don't make the schedule too short; I already seem to be overcommitting to readalongs/buddy reads for next year, but I've found I really enjoy them, so if it's a book I've been wanting to get to anyway... My copy of The Empusium is in the mail; I'm also hoping to get to that one before the end of the year. I'm feeling like I should've joined you for East of Eden - I was scheduled to read it this month with another group but it seems like it's gone defunct - and I feel like I've got so much to discuss! I'm not on Voxer and had hesitated to join yet.another.platform, but there's now a couple of group reads there that are tempting me, so it might be time to bite the bullet... Biography of X was one of my favorite books last year! And definitely read Becky Chambers - I think she'd be the perfect comfort read right now.
Nola was excited by your jazz hands greeting 🙌yet frustrated by having been born with less expressive paws. 🐾Hence the barking and squeaky toy reactions.😆
I am really curious to know what you thought about the ending of God of the Woods - did you find it realistic?
I just ordered my copy!
I want to read “Doppelganger” but after reading “Code Dependent,” and after the US election, I fear I’m not up for it yet.
I get it, but when/if you do, she does end her book on a hopeful note. She's very good.
Thank you for hosting the Martyr! readalong. A Little Luck was outstanding. I'm currently in a reading group that is reading all of Claudia Piñeiro's books (that have been translated into English). Some will be rereads, but I'm excited to dig deeper into her. I still need to get to Doppelgänger.
Thanks so much for participating! I am keen to read more Piñeiro as well, she is an incredible writer.
@@stalkingkafka If you get to Time of the Flies (her most recent that came out in August, I think), you should know that it's a sequel to All Yours which was published several years ago. I don't think you could read Time of the Flies as a stand alone and get the full impact.
Doppelganger has been on my TBR for ages. I should get to it soon. You had such interesting thoughts on it! Thank you!
It's very good!
The Moonstone readalong was lovely. Thank you for hosting. Doppelganger was so thought-provoking.
Aw...it was such a pleasure, very enjoyable for me too! 🥰
I always enjoy your videos and reading East of Eden as part of your group read was a reading highlight of the year, but this video has catapulted me out of a reading slump, although read what interests you should have been obvious. Thank you so much.
I enjoyed Unreconciled a lot on audio! It was unexpected and highly compelling.
🌹
🌹💙From Quebec City ! 😊
I also loved Say Nothing! I am such a fan of Patrick Radden Keefe. He has a way of making nonfiction really engaging. Please read Empire of Pain. You will love it! These Precious Days was really nice. How to Say Babylon was an amazing memoir! I can't wait to hear what you think of it. It has both an amazing story and incredible writing.
Nice video. Path - "Margaret Hamilton From Cleveland ohio to the Land of Oz " about her journey from kindergarten teacher to the Wicked Witch!
I listened to Sinead O'Connor's autobiography earlier this year, read by her. While it moved me and left me feeling even more respect for her, I think the book you have is probably a better book to get a sense of her life and legacy. In her autobiography she skipped many parts of her life and glossed over other important events. The audio was hard to listen to as her voice was mumbling, gravely, monotone, tired and sad. It made me sad listening. While she talked about some important people in her life, mostly her kids, the rest seemed to be more rambling and reminiscing about just whatever she remembered or wanted to actually talk about, some of which wasn't of much interest to be honest. I think she wrote it after her son died and a year or so before she did as well. It felt lost. I felt bad for her and am very happy that other's have lauded the authenticity, courage, commitment and bravery she showed in her life. I would like to read the book you have on her! On another note..How to Say Babylon was beautifully written and well deserving of it's awards. not only is Safiya Sinclair a good poet, but an engaging novelist as well!
I don't know if you know who Kris Kristofferson is, but apparently, he wrote and recorded a song called Sister Sinead in support of Sinéad O' Connor, and it's so awesome. We lost a true treasure this year. She is one I would like to read more about. 🌹
🌹😊
Kimmerer’s audiobook is really pleasant. The author’s intonation added to the narrative. I’m probably not going to fit in much nonfiction this month. 😢
🌹
I may have to leave the country if you don’t enjoy “Superfan.” 😆I also think you’re going to like “How to Say Babylon.” I’ve kicked off Nonfiction November by listening to “Jokes Jokes Jokes: My Very Funny Memoir” by British comedian, Jenny Éclair. This was followed by “We All Shine On: John, Yoko, and Me” by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s friend, Elliot Mintz. I’ll follow this with the upcoming “Cher: The Memoir, Part One.” Cher has so much to say that it requires two volumes! I’m also awaiting the November release of “Songbird: An Intimate Biography of Christine McVie” of Fleetwood Mac fame. I’m besotted by Alan Cumming and recommend his 2014 memoir, “Not My Father’s Son” although “Baggage” is good, too. As you can see, I like memoirs just as much as you do but I’ll read anything that interests me in the nonfiction field.
🌹
Ooh another hobonichi video, I've been using my first hobonichi weeks this year and I'm still kinda finding my footing in it, there has been months that have just stayed blank. But now I'm kind of getting back in to it and finding joy in decorating and updating it. And I got a new one for next year aswell. I love the cloth cover you have for your day free a6, that looks so cute alltogether! I actually really like the yellow inside, I think with the books in it it just has this pop of yellow around the border, so it doesn't seem to be too overwhelming.
@@marcellainthemargins aw…thanks! I do love it 😍.

Hi who is the author of Three? I don't think you mentioned it, and I can't find it by the title alone. Thanks for your insights.
www.amazon.ca/Three-intricate-thriller-deception-identities/dp/1529400090
Just so you know, I don't know if it was intentional, but in the first 1 min of the video, the music is a bit too loud and I couldn't hear what you said. :) Wish you well & i subscribed 2 you!
Thanks for the note - I forgot to adjust the levels this time, and thanks for being a subscriber! 🥰
This was such a fun video. I’m going to get to No Exit this winter. It’s on my shelves.
This was fun, Jess! Rather than spooky season books, I’m only reading cozy books from now until the U.S. election is over. Even though I’m not American, I’m stressed out by it all. Nonetheless, I’ve made note of a few titles.
I am very scared of the real world too! 😱
Ooh I hope you enjoy the second half of North and South as much as the first half! My favourite Victorian novel! I'm just finishing Crying in H Mart and gosh it's been a punch in the gut - it's taken me a while to read because I find it so rough to read. Definitely been crying!
Happy to see "Frankenstein" in your rankings.A few days ago Book Chat with Pat posted about it, and today I posted my own views. It's a true classic.
Honestly, Frankenstein is THE BEST!!
I love these. I usually have 3 going at a time. An ebook, an audiobook and a physical book. I have also used audiobooks to help with texts that have diffcult names/places to pronounce to help me understand and get through it a bit easier.
