Kamae or Waza?
Просмотров 593Год назад
Often in our efforts to find meaning in the movements of kata we can ascribe techniques where they may not have been intended. I don't think that that is necessarily a bad outcome if the techniques work. When I was in the Marines we used to say that if something was stupid but it worked then it wasn't stupid. Well stupid is too strong of a word for this, but I think the meaning is clear. If we ...
気を付け (Kiotsuke) Attention - Some thoughts on paying attention
Просмотров 224Год назад
In last evening’s class after bowing in with the familiar commands 気を付け (kiotsuke) attention and 礼 (rei) bow (or show respect), I asked the students to think about the command for attention. In many ways it can be like a close order drill command, like a platoon leader brining a platoon to the position of attention, but it can also mean literally pay attention. I asked them to not only pay atte...
Importance of Femur Alignment in Nekko Ashi Dachi
Просмотров 251Год назад
A slight misalignment of the femur in the cat stance will undermine the stability of the rest of the body. We see this with an example from Pinan Yondan. Also, as noted in some online discussion, I probably should have moved her foot in instead of moving her knee out. The back foot should be at about a 45 degree angle. After I adjusted her knee that angle was probably too wide for the stance.

Exercise for hanzadachi when recovering from injury
Просмотров 3672 года назад
Many people struggle with the hanzadachi. This is the one leg bent and one leg straight in a crouch stance seen in the Sakugawa kata as well as a few other kata. It requires good balance, range of motion, and strength. I am dealing with a problem in my right hip, so this stance has become a challenge for me. I developed a simple method for training this stance using a bo held between two traini...
Learn from Feeling
Просмотров 2532 года назад
A quick discussion of how to use drills to correct perceptions of movement in kata. Feeling the technique is one of the best ways to learn it. Here we show a drill for the movement in Kusanku Sho (or Kankusho for mainland systems) where we rotate our hands inside of the opponent's hands.
Beware the Handles

When blocking with certain weapons, it pays to be aware of a danger that a handle or a spike could be pushed back into your head if you don't have a good position.

Sparring at the Sanda Taikai in Tokyo 2005
Просмотров 812 года назад
The Sanda Taikai was a friendly event which featured open bouts with various rules all which allowed full contact. We attended it a few years in a row and developed some good rapport with the other groups in the area. I fought four times that day, winning three of the four bouts. The last one was with a guy who was 20. I was 39 at the time and my conditioning was not on par with his. The video ...

That's Minowa Katsuhiko to Kinjo Masakazu lineage version, isn't it? A pointer is second 9, where the left hand is in Hiki-te, instead of at the right arm. Also, the okutsu sideways posture at the very end.

Thanks Tim, nice conversation....I think the purpose of kata is widely misunderstood due to many reasons, but a big reason, I believe, is because folk want to have kata explained to them, rather than discover for themselves, through practice and mindful training, what a kata has to offer. The rise in popularity of 'bunkai' teachers reflects the fall in skill and understanding of karateka. People in general are happy to settle for 'knowing about' karate rather than 'knowing' it. The first is an external event that takes only a short amount of time to achieve, the second stems from inside and takes a whole lot longer. So many now believe that making karate their own is the same thing as making their own karate...without understanding the difference their karate continues to be of little practical use.

Hi Matt, no this is on a 90 Degree orientation as I understand that stance uses, it is more like 45 Degrees. Maybe the camera angle made it look like 90 or maybe I was overly focused on the alignment of the femur and the foot and missed the level of precision for the foot orientation at that 45 Degrees and caused some confusion. Anyway, it is a slightly different stance.
