2022 NCHC Frozen Faceoff Recap and 2022 NCAA Mens Hockey Tournament Bracket Picks
Good chance CC comes to Lawson undefeated in a few weeks. They have Air Force 2X and then Arizona State. That could be a big weekend in Kalamazoo for early pairwise help. We have to get ready to play a tough Omaha team next week on the road though first.
That would be fun.
Im looking forward to see what Lemyre will do in Brown and Gold. I have a feeling he will be an impact player just like Colangelo and Costantini were last year. Fersch just develops these guys and in the right system, they can thrive. Lemyre wasnt an every night guy for Denver but when he was in the lineup, seems like he made an impact, even scoring a huge goal in the FF. I think he will do really well with us, cant wait to see him play. Plus, hes from Montreal, and the last guy we had from Montreal turned out pretty good.
I agree, felt like he wants to prove something to Denver and thinks WMU is give him the ice time and coaches to do it. Ferch and the guys are doing something right and guys around college are noticing.
You kept a steady pace👍
I think were gonna see a lot of mixed classmen lines, like freshman with seniors, juniors and freshman, etc. The freshman coming in I would imagine will see ice time right away plus our transfers. Im not too worried anymore, when we feel like we have a big drop off, another line comes in and dominates. We dont replace anymore, we reload.
Those are my thoughts on it too. The coaching staff has done a great job over that last few seasons doing just that. I am hoping we can get some defensive help to go along with those great offenses if late though. Blue line play as been a weakness.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs Yeah we need offensive defenseman, but we need defenseman that play defense as well. That cost us SOO many goals last two seasons, stupid breakdowns. Im hoping these defenseman we brought in will be more stay at home D.
They don't have to necessarily be stay at home D but there needs to be defensive awareness.
Wally is such a beauty, he is your definition of a team player and what a captain should be, I just hate he played in a bad bronco era, imagine if he played now, would be amazing.
He would be on another level if he had gotten to play even a few years later. The thing that stands out the most is to a point he had individual success, but its not about that for him. He wanted success as a team cause it keeps the team together forever.
I really really appreciate that... thank you
Great episode. I wish I could have been live last night to ask him, why is your radio guy (CC) such a tool? LOL some of the things that guy says on air during games is quite questionable......
Might have to keep track of that for the next time Nick is on.
As long as Umass doesnt beat BC, WMU will likely stay around #12 PWR which avoids us being a 4 seed and having to play likely Boston U or even the committee forcing us to play North Dakota or Denver in a NCAA tourney due to NCHC having so many teams in this year. Also, you guys hit the nail on the head, the officiating in the NCHC dictates outcomes more than I have ever seen since watching WMU hockey since 2006. It is absolutely pathetic! The commissioner is clueless, how does anyone that even remotely understand sports cannot see how much NCHC officiating dictates outcomes of games, its unbelievable!! She just makes the stupid excuse "oh this isnt their full time job", yeah? and?!!
I am over hearing that argument for refs. Yeah this podcast isn't my full time job either. Hell I pay out a decent amount of money to do it, but I put time into it to learn the game, to watch the games, to look up stats, make arguments, and the numerous other things because I like hockey and find time to do it. There is no reason a red couldn't review the rule book or watch films or do online training. There is no reason it should feel like they don't know the game.
It's laughable that Miami wants to leave the conference, where do they think they could go and be competitive? I mean they couldnt even sweep bottom feeder atlantic hockey teams (Mercyhurst and Niagara). Even in the CCHA they would probably be like mid to lower. This weekend is huge, I really hope the team that beat Denver and Omaha soundly shows up, we need to get two wins, I hope that happens, but it will probably end in a split. I dont think we've ever swept SCSU in SC. Anyways, I hope you have a blast at the games!!
The closest WMU has come to sweeping in St. Cloud is a Shootout W and Reg W in the 2013-2014 season. WMU and SCSU have split 5 series in St. Cloud. Miami has just been a bad team the last few years. They feel like that mid 2000s WMU team. Just can't get anything going. A culture change is probably that only thing that turns that team around.
I just want to see us come out and respond like we did the weekend when we played Denver at home. That effort saturday against Miami was just brutal, Miami gave us every opportunity to tie / win that game on saturday and we did nothing. We seem to play well vs Duluth at Lawson over the years, but if this team wants to win the penrose, they have to win two this weekend and just look at last saturday's loss as a fluke. Duluth is going to play WMU extermely tough and Sandlin will look to make it a one goal ish type game, he knows they cant beat us in a shootout type 5-4 game, its just not happening. We get up a few goals on them, they wont come back.
UMD got more bad news. It is looking like it should be WMUs weekend to win. They still have to show up and play their games though.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs well they still have Steeves, who can really be a game changer if you dont shut him down, dont need him scoring this weekend.
Very true. Steeves is the dangerous one on that team. He is for doing his best to keep them in games. WMU has to play the way they did against Denver in that Friday game, but do it all weekend.
Mike’s volume was off on this episode
He was using a different mic and was coming in a bit loud too me I tried to manage it. Might have just been on my end. Turned him down on the wrong setting. Got it fixed for next week.
The big key to this weekend will be capitalizing on the powerplays, Lindenwood takes the 2nd most penalties in the NCAA at nearly 17 mins a game which translates to about 8 penalties, thats bad, probably because they're just not talented enough to hang around so they take slashes, trips, etc. We capitalize on the PP's and net some goals, it will be two blowout games.
Broncos are sitting at .238 on the power play. They have only drawn 42 penalties. If they can play clean and get Lindenwood to committ penalties it could make a big difference. According to my possibly flawed math the Lions are giving up 4.6 goals a game and the Broncos are scoring 3.67 goals a game. This could be a solid stretch of games to get the offense rolling headed into a series with Denver and their nation leading 5.5 goals a game. Keep the defensive play where it's been and take advantage in the offensive zone.
Huge weekend on the road vs a very good CC team to see if this team can bounce back. I am eager to see if we can bounce back. Like you mentioned, SCSU is a good team, but friday's game after the Grainger goal, the team has to find a way to close that one out and at least get the split on the weekend. Had they gotten the split, I wouldnt have felt so disappointed after this weekend but I just feel we are missing that offensive explosiveness that we had the last two years. SCSU locked us down defensively and you know dang right that's what CC is going to do like they did in the NCHC playoffs last year. This will be a tough weekend. I feel like Fersch doesn't know what to do when a team locks us down defensively, it has shown over the last two years. When they lock is down, we almost go into a shell and we dont know what to do.
SCSU hasnt won at Lawson since 2019, we just seem to take care of them at home lately.
And WMU hadn't beaten UNO in Omaha since 2020 until last Friday. WMU has to avoid the box and show up to play both nights.
WMU hasnt won at Omaha since 2019, we need to end that this weekend!! For whatever reason, we NEVER play well at Omaha, we have to win this weekend.
Omaha is an underrated building. It would be nice to turn that around considering WMU is gonna be seeing them a lot more often starting next season.
Phillips was an absolute steal for WMU, he is a game changer. Also, maybe recommend a weekly NCHC power ranking for both you and Mike? That would be cool to see.
His game is incredible. Maybe slightly undersized but uses it to his advantage and finds away to get to the net. I think the power rankings are something we are gonna do moving forward. It was an interesting tangent that popped up.
Bummed I missed this one live because I wanted to chime in as well. I can agree with both of your guy's rankings. #1 thought I have is that Berry continues to use the portal as a bandaid and its not working. I feel like ND will be more around 6th like Mike had them. I think 3-7 will have major shake ups throughout most of the year and teams will continue to shuffle each week. I think that the standings will be super tight and the parity this year will be bigger than ever. I like WMU at #1-2, they just have to win the big games (win games in Denver and Omaha) and prove they belong. Im also eager to see how the lines will shape up this year with WMU.
By the way I love the intro and outro music, its such a banger.
I gave a lot of credit to the way CC closed the season last year. If they can play that way from the jump then I had them finishing better than UND with all of their transitions and the inconsistent play last season. The conference is gonna see a lot of shuffling throughout the standings with the exception being Miami. They seemed to be locked into that 8th seed.
Also, WMU played St. Lawrence in the 2021-2022 season where we absolutely dominated them out there in NY in 2 games.
I think this team could be better than last year, with our experienced d-core, Cam Rowe having a year of NCHC play under his belt, and with our transfers coming in, I feel we could be really strong. Transfers will also play a big role, Colangelo, Phillips (Who helped set up some goals against us in the tourney last year), Constantini and even Cassetti who I think will play a grinder role and get those dirty goals out front with his size. Plus you look at our returners, Grainger, Hillebrand, Wendt, Washe, Schingothye (healthy this year). Winning our out of conference games this year is a MUST, we dont play anyone that is ranked, at least now, we have to take care of those games.
Agreed. The Broncos need to be successful in the nonconference portion of the schedule. Cam really came on strong later in the year hopefully he can start the year strong and get stronger. I think the d can be better than it was last year. My hope for the offense is that it is a little more balanced than what we saw last year. If they can get balanced scoring all season instead of having to rely and depend on one line WMU could be dangerous. The conference feels up for grabs for everyone except Miami.
Only two games against WMU this year for UMD - Mike thank god, so we dont put the puck in our own net again LOL
Can't say the games between UMD and WMU aren't exciting. Over the first ten years of the NCHC these two teams have had some very memorable ones. It is one of the matchups I most look forward to each season.
I think its pretty clear by now that Miami fans are pretty tired of Bergeron and his losing ways. When I went to the Miami series in March, a lot of fans were booing him when they announced the coaches. I think that if they dont improve this year, I think hes gone and they look for maybe an up-coming major junior coach or grab an assistant coach from another school. I am surprised it has taken Miami this long with their snobbish type of fan base and their program being overall successful to continue to be the basement dweller of the NCHC. The last few years kind of remind of me of when I was at WMU we had some pretty bad years during the Cullhane era.
WMU certainly struggled with Culhane. Blashill turned the program around in one season and Murray ran with it. There where a couple lean years in the NCHC but Ferchweiler has gotten the Broncos going. It certainly feels like something has to change with Miami. They did hang onto Blasi for a little too long before the change to Bergeron. It will be something to keep an eye on. I was expecting a bit more from Bergeron considering what he was able to do with Bowling Green. He got them going in the right direction and they have done a decent job continuing that way.
Luke is such a great guy, hes the perfect example of how hard work gets you where you want to be. Another player kinda like Worrad who didnt have many offers out of juniors and now look at him, he is a top player in the country's best college hockey conference. I think he will have a big year this year! Cant wait!
He has continued to improve his game every season. Wins face-offs and scores big time goals. Definitely on my short list of guys that could have a break out year and put himself in a good spot at a pro contract.
Theo Thrun is the only bronco that has not found a spot yet after leaving WMU, interested to see where he ends up.
Yeah, same. The transfer situation is always interesting. It has changed all of college sports very quickly. It will also be interesting to see how this trend continues as the extra covid year players age out.
Im excited to see what Colangelo can do next year, I think he will have a solid year with us. Should be interesting to see who he will play with, maybe Grainger?
Can wait to see what he does. Grainger or Washe would be my guess as the guys that are gonna center the line he is on. Just depends on how their games match up. The WMU coaching staff has done a great job matching player styles to create some dynamic and productive lines.
I believe Sam would technically be the highest drafted player that WMU has ever had?
From what I can tell once he suits up for the Broncos he will be the highest Draft pick to play for WMU. Mike McCarron was committed to WMU when he was taken 25th overall in 2013. He chose to sign a 3yr elc with MTL rather play at WMU.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs mccaron was a huge bust. He should have played college
We also just landed Matteo Constantini from Nodak
Saw that. Had a solid freshman. Looks like he struggled a little bit last season. Seems like he could be the guy to step into the spot Perbix is giving up. Upside he comes in as junior so could be at WMU for a couple of seasons.
So WMU forwards out: Thrun (Portal), McAllister (Pro Deal?), Gallant (Eligibility), Polin (Pro Deal), Rome (Eligibility), Brooks (Portal), Perbix (Pro Deal? Has another year of eligibility but doubtful he stays when hes a draft pick), Sasson (Pro Deal). Defense: Galambos (Eligibility), Berger (Pro Deal? Has another year but doubtful he returns when hes a draft pick), Fulp (Hearing NYI interest). We are in major rebuilding mode next year, thats alot of people leaving. Interested to see how many freshman they bring in and or portal.
Yeah it is shaping up to be another off season with a high turn over. This season showed this staff can reload and be competitive. Goaltending feels solid unlike last season and that in itself is an improvement.
What a difference a couple weeks makes. We now know Perbix is back in the portal, Galambos and Berger both coming back for another season. Couple solid pick ups form the portal.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs I agree, our D-core and goaltending should be solid, just have to rebuild our scoring and I dont think that will be an issue with our two portal pick ups and what we have coming back, we should be ok.
Wes, you hit the nail on the head on several points. I don't understand the defensive zone issues with this team, simple zone exits, we failed SOOOO much to clear the puck out of our zone the last 3 games, we do this moving forward, we are DONE round 1. We have plenty of solid skill and veteranship on the back end that this should not be happening. Also, its been worrying that our scoring has dried up the last few games with only the Polin line scoring, where has Grainger, Hillebrand, Perbix, Gallant been??? If we want to make a run, we need to have that depth scoring like we've had all the way up until the Miami series. I like you, will cheer for the broncos all day, but I do not have too much confidence we make it out of round 1, but maybe since we are sneaking into the NCAA tourney, this is better than last year where we came in hot? I dont know at this point how to feel..........
WMU is in an interesting spot right now. They can take the time and maybe get some rest and healthier. Our depth scoring has fallen off a bit and was a big part of our success throughout the year. That needs to return, but not every game can be a shoot out. Defensive play will continue to be a big part going forward.
My picks: WMU, Denver, Omaha and SCSU. For some reason my gut tells me Omaha will break through this weekend and get to Minneapolis.
UND was really more of a spite pick against Omaha. That series is closer to being a toss up. Omaha is a tough team with a solid atmosphere. Most teams seem to struggle playing there, but UND is not one of the them. Gonna be a fun weekend.
26:00 Wes, I tend to agree with you, broncos were outplayed friday night, but a 3-2 game, it probably ends up 4-2 with an EN kinda like saturday night's game, but at least it would have still been a 3-2 game and a chance for WMU to maybe tie it? Idk, it could go either way. I knew as soon as DU popped one goal, it was over and deflate the tires completely. Satrudays game we looked more like we belong but our PP is brutal right now, Berger is more of a loss on the PP than Rome. Not hating on Rome, but we are way deep enough on offense to replace Rome but Berger kind of quarterbacks the PP, I hope hes back for at least NCHC first round.
Berger is definitely missed more, but Rome was a threat to shoot. Until McAllister learns to shoot more often even if it is just to sell the threat the power play will be less effective. I did like having Washe in that first power play because he did a great job staying infront if Chrona.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs I agree, Mcallister has a deadly shot if he just SHOOTS!!!
He does but he is so pass first that guys sit on the pass but he still refuses to shoot. Shooting will open up his passing again and make him more of a threat in the zone.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs If we can finish 2nd, which I think we will, we will get CC and we should be OK to get to Minni. CC is a good team but they cant score goals to save their lives and I dont see us dropping a series to them at home. Then to Minni, its up in the air who we would get, probably SCSU / Omaha, depending on how the standings shape up as we would have the 2 seed so unless Miami beats DU, we get the middle seed match up.
WMU is in a favorable position, but Miami is playing better. They have a solid goaltender in Persson who has shown to be tough to get the puck past. Need a little bit of help from UMD and UND to really secure that 2 spot.
WMU spring break is March 6-10, so lunatics will have to be back in time for the NCHC playoff series, hopefully Lawson is packed and the boys pull it out!!
Unfortunate timing for it to be during playoffs, but good news it will not be this weekend. This is a prime time series.
Huge stretch coming for the broncos. You get 6 out of the next 8 at home, absolutely have to get some wins and take advantage of home ice. I like us to sweep Omaha this weekend and continue the momentum from last weekend. Rowe didnt have the best outing in Omaha and he knows it, if hes better, we absolutely win game 1 and maybe take game 2. We just need to continue to keep winning and see what happens. Is it friday yet?!! Also, if it wasnt for that stupid opening season loss to UAA, we are #7 in pairwise........
Also, hope Grainger is ok, he kills Omaha, need him in the lineup this weekend.
The team in a good spot right now. Everyone is playing well. Now it is just about limiting the mistakes. They did a good job of that on the weekend, but the two big ones ended up in the back of the net. There is still time to get a little higher in all the rankings if they can keep playing the way they have been.
Considering his history against Omaha when things are given away it would definitely be nice to have him out there.
@@77Danny Did I miss something? Is he injured?
@@carlmielock1044 He didnt play saturday nights game. He was on the roster but was a late scratch, so hopefully it was illness and not injury.
Where has WMU freshman Ethan Wolthers gone?!?! Was having a solid few games on that 2nd line before Hillebrand came back from injury. Keep rotating guys in and out of that winger spot on the 4th line but never seen Wolthers get his chance there. Seems like mixing in a smaller, quicker, righty guy could add some variety to the bigger bodied Rome and Washe. Kids a great player and would love to see him out there again.
He hasn't played since the St. Cloud series. Might just be a matchups thing or someone winning a spot in practice. They have done a decent job of mixing in the newer guys and trying to get them some playing time. I don't think we have seen the last of him this season.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs hopefully you’re right. Seems to have a lot of upside and is a fun player to watch
@@carlmielock1044 definitely a fun player to watch when he is on the ice.
CBSSports network needs to change and come to Lawson the following week for the Omaha series, that series has HUGE implications, especially whatever happens after this weekend vs CC.
Every series here on out can effect the playoffs. Last year not much was figured out until the last weekend. I do agree that UNO @ WMU would be a great series for CBSSports network to broadcast.
Also, Ethen Frank and Brandon Bussi were just named to the Atlantic All-star team in the AHL!!! HELL YES!
Yeah just saw that on Twitter. Well deserved for both guys. They are killing it in the AHL this season.
Looking forward to how the broncos respond this weekend in Grand Forks. Usually not a good place for us to win, yes, we've won in there before (Swept in I believe 2018-2019) and sometimes can steal a game or two. It again comes down to goaltending for us, we can certainly score on Nodak as their goaltending is not good. This is the point of the year where we need to turn on the afterburners and start moving up the rankings so we can get an at-large bid. I am also flying to Oxford, OH in March (last regular season weekend series) to watch the broncos play Miami, super pumped!! I am hoping we have something to play for that weekend. Good show as always, I work early mornings so I am usually in bed by the time you guys go live, but I always watch it the next day.
Appreciate you. Trevor was the goal tender for our first possible only sweep in Grand Forks that much I know. He made a great save and we went on a bit of a run that season. At large is nice but it would be nice to get that auto bid for winning the conference tournament. That is down the road. I made that drive down to Oxford once. Flying is probably the right move it was an awful drive through an awful state. It is a nice looking arena but I didn't like there use of the space.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs I live in Houston, TX so flying is really the only option for me LOL I went to WMU from 06-10, but now live in Houston, TX
We were there around the same time I was 07-13. There were some lean years at the beginning of our fandom.
Trevor Gorsuch, a WMU legend. Wish I could have watched live, I would have liked to ask him how WMU lost that first round NCHC series to CC his senior year.........
I believe he brings that up in one of his previous episodes. Hopefully not the lost episode.
Went back and checked. If you go to the 39 minute mark of his first appearance episode titles A XXL Episode he mentions that series.
Hope you guys have fun in Nashville! Hopefully we can pull of a big win against NE, it will probably feel like another NCAA regional game lol. Glad Mike is converting to a Bronco fan this weekend! XD
I am slowly chipping away on his bulldog fan hood. If the offense continues to play the way they have and we can get enough defense we have a shot. Levi is a great goalie and hard to get the puck around.
I wonder what the status is of freshman Samuel Sjolund? Guy is a Stars draft pick and as if we needed more depth on our defense core. This weekend vs SCSU, we need to watch SCSU guys cheating on the big open ice and getting behind our defenseman. Over the years, we get beat on transition goals when our defenseman are out of position and they get breakaways and oddman rushes, we have to cut down on them. Thats usually our flaw at SCSU. I think a split is likely here.
The downside to being a freshman defense coming into WMU is that was were they had a lot of experience coming back and the transfer guys were experienced players as well. It is a good point for the d to be aware when the are jumping up in the offensive zone. Rowe has struggled in some break away type plays. It is gonna be a great match up. The WMU puck possession game is incredible right now. If they can keep that up and avoid penalties it would not be hard to see them picking up important points in the NCHC standings. The scary thing about this team is we have not yet seen their best hockey. Might need it this weekend though.
I have heard that Sjolund can’t play for 40 games due to some NCAA rule. I believe it is because he played in some league overseas which is technically prohibited by the NCAA. If the 40 game rule is true, we won’t see him until about this time next year unfortunately
I am not seeing anything that specificly mentions a number of games. One article I saw did say the season. I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. Honestly he might have had trouble seeing the ice this season anyway. Our blue liners have played well so far this season. This gives him an opportunity to get into comfortable with classes and the college schedule. That I think is sometimes over looked even though the hockey players are generally older there is still an adjustment to be made.
@@GoalHornsandFightSongs agreed. I guess we’ll find out early next year whether or not he is able to play immediately. I’m excited to see him play once he gets that chance.
I was at WMU when JJ played for the broncos, not the biggest guy but man he was gritty and fast. I always enjoyed watching him play.
J.J was a great player, and I am so glad we got the opportunity to talk to him about his career. He is doing a great job helping the team develop and play some great hockey.
WMU has to get better goaltending and stay out of the box. With all we lost, its pretty incredible to see this team still scoring a ton of goals. I think this team can finish in the top 4 of the NCHC this year. It showed this weekend that WMU can play with the best. I really like what I see so far. Gotta take care of business vs Miami this weekend. It's also crazy how many shots we are holding other teams to. I mean they outshot Michigan by 20 shots.
WMU can for sure end up in that top 4 of the NCHC again. Coach Pat said they held Michigan to just 11 shots during 5 on 5 chances in the Saturday game. Their puck control and offensive pressure have been great. Got to sure up that defensive zone and stay out of the box. They have been getting production up and down the line-up. It is hard to beat a team that can roll 4 lines and put pressure on with each of them.
Good interview
