Welcome to my channel. I'm an amateur classical musician with a passion for late 19th century romantic guitar music, and especially the music of Spain. I create many of my own arrangements, and often arrange pieces as duets. On occasion I throw in some piano or bass, or play another genre, or compose something. The need to communicate with others during the COVID era lock-down fired-up my passion for music again and now there's no turning back. I also enjoy the technical and other creative aspects of recording and making music videos. Enjoy!
Julia Florida (Agustín Barrios)
Paraguayan virtuoso and composer Agustín Barrios dedicated this lovely piece to his pupil, Julia "Florida" Martinez de Rodriguez, niece of his friend Francisco Salazar. "Florida" means "flowery" in Spanish.
The guitar part was recorded in my loft using my 1998 David Daily CD/IN, and two AKG C451B microphones in an AB configuration 26 inches from the sound board.
Thanks to Will Fraser for his camera work, the use of his rose garden for the video shoot, and his help with the production.

The Four Seasons: Winter II. Largo (Antonio Vivaldo, 1720)
Просмотров 519Месяц назад
Marilyn and I were listening to chamber music performance of Four Seasons at a church in Venice, Italy on vacation when it occurred to me that the second movement of Winter would work well as an arrangement for guitar and cello, and that it’d be nice to release it for the Winter solstice around the holiday. I put together an arrangement the day we got home from vacation and worked with Kaitlyn ...

Rumores De La Caleta (Albéniz)
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.11 месяцев назад
The title translates to "whispers from the beach" and is a form of Malagueña composed for the piano but the piece was certainly inspired by flamenco guitar music. I recorded this using a mid-side technique with mics I built from kits I purchased from Microphone-Parts: a 12-251 tube condenser (mid) and an S3-87 FET condenser (side). You can see the two mics positioned about 14" from the bridge o...
Cadiz (Albéniz)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Cadiz is named for a seaside city in southern Spain and was composed for the piano by Albéniz sometime between 1882-1889. The subtitle is Saeta, which is a type of mornful religious song. Here I have reinterpreted the piece to convey the joy and adventure that I feel when I spend a day by the sea. We incorporated video footage from seaside locations around California. Here is the score in PDF: ...

Homenaje A Tárrega (Joaquín Turina)
Просмотров 585Год назад
This flamenco piece was written in the 1930's, in honor of the "father of classical guitar", Francisco Tárrega. The print that appears behind me is "El Jaleo" by John Singer Sargent and was painted in the 1890's after the artist toured Spain and Morocco. I recorded and shot the video in my loft using my 2004 Stephen Hill SP/CY and two hand-built 12-251 tube mics in mid-side, 14 inches from the ...
The Story of the Kalendar Prince (Rimsky-Korsakov)

I hope you enjoy my guitar interpretation of this tale! In this story, the king plans to behead Scheherazade the next morning, believing that she will betray him. Learning of this plan, Scheherazade kept the king awake by telling him a fantastic story that lasted through the night. He delayed the execution night after night as she continued to awe him with tales. At the end of 1001 nights Scheh...

Spanish Dance No. 5 (Granados)
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 года назад
This tone poem was composed for piano in 1890 and has become an important piece in the classical guitar repertoire. It is deceptively tricky to play given the numerous time signature changes and the composer's free interpretation of the rhythm and tempo. I have attempted to strike a balance between providing my own interpretation, and respecting the composition. I shot the rose sequences at the...

Thank you!
Outstanding as always. Keep them coming.
Thanks so much, I've got several Spanish style solo pieces in the works
fantastic playing, and recording. came here to hear how the MicParts tube mic sounded on guitar, stayed for the interpretation 🖖
I really appreciate the comment and I'm so glad you liked it. On the one hand, there are sections that I could have played a bit cleaner, but on the other hand, I was really connecting emotionally and just went with it, glad I did. And the 12-251 tube mic sounds terrific on guitar. Drop me a line if you ever want to correspond about recording brienalkire at protonmail dot com

@@BrienAlkireMusic sure! You are very talented!
Amazing!
Bravo!
Thanks, Kit! Hope you're planning some great dives out there!
Really beautiful, Brien. Are you using a non-standard tuning? I thought I saw you strum some open strings.
@@RobertAGuffey Thank you very much! It is a drop-D, so tuning is DADGBE. The last chord is DAD, but I believe the F# harmonic is still sustaining so it definitely sounds like a D-major chord.
Beautiful arrangement and sensitive performance from both of you. I love the pacing and the open spaces. --Robert Guffey
Thank you my friend!

This is so beautiful, Brien. Thank you for sending this to me as well.
Bravo! The break in tone at the end does move joyful :)
Thank you my friend, much appreciated!
Wow! 02:00 onwards sounds very eastern !
Exactly. The composer (Rimsky-Korsakov) was inspired by 1001 Arabian Nights. And I think the Spanish guitar with its Moorish influence adds to that. Thanks!
So great!!
Thanks my friend. Looking forward to the next movement of the Morel.
This is so beautiful!
Thank you my friend! Nothing makes me happier than hearing those words!
Nice! I love Piazzolla!
