Adventures in Drone Flying
Добавлен 11 фев 2019
This channel will be about my journey in learning to fly quadcopter drones, becoming FAA 107 certified, and working towards being able to do commercial drone work (videography, photogrammetry, survey, sensor data collection, etc.). Previously, as a hobby, I flew small scale gas and electric RC airplanes and gliders and became interested in drones about 7 years ago.
I will be bring examples of my flying which incorporates video and sound editing as well as cool technical aspects of drone flying.

HS700 Follow Me
Demonstration of the "Follow Me" mode of my Holystone HS700 drone. From the smartphone app, once activiated, the drone will follow you, a short distance away, where ever you go. If youmove toward the drone, it will fly backwards to maintain the distance between you and itself.

This video shows results of my test to fly my Holystone HS700 drone just at beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and fly it back using first person view (FPV). It was a very clear hot day. My drone is black and that color is a little of a disadvantage identifying at a distance. Others have flown their HS700 much further than what I did, but I wasn't sure what lay ahead of the drone and didn't wa...

I apologize to my subscribers for not posting for a while. The previous year was crazy enough but this year has been even crazier. This short video is a testament to the great strength and build quality of Holystone drones. During a gold prospecting trip to Quartzsite, AZ, I accidentally crashed my HS700 drone. Damage was minimally and drone still flies and functions normally.

Any made from glass? Polycarbonate is easy to scratch and blocks almost all UV. Blu-ray?
Thanks. I've got a nice refractor with a poor focuser. I'm in the process on converting it into a spectroscope.
Bonjour j ai un cell Android et la communication se fait pas entre cell et drôle ???
Rubbing the DVD with paper can damage the grating. Simply put it in warm ethanol solution and wait for the dye to dissolve. Notice that the other half with the aluminum you said to discard still acted as a reflective diffraction grating. 5:27
why i cannot detect the satelite gps
I am not sure. After it goes through the start up initialization and you calibrate the drone to make it ready for flight, the number of GPS satellite signals should show up on your controller and viewing device. I will do some research and see if I can come up with a solution.
@STANDARD GABAN - Check your device, i.e. smartphone or tablet and make sure GPS is enabled. My internet research shows this is one problem that can prevent GPS satellites from showing up and the GPS required parts if the app, like Tap Fly, etc. from working.
If I had to listen to this voice too long, I think I would do myself bodily harm ... other than this, the video is not very informative ...
Thank you for your input and thanks for watching anyway.
We're you using the aee as an fpv or no? Really curious because I just bought one and idk if o can use it as an fpv
The AEE camera works a little better than the standard camera for FPV (less lag) on my HS 700D drone, however, even though it is 5 GHz band, IMO it was still too laggy for any fast flying or when you are too near obstructions. Also, as I show in one of my other videos, the wifi range on the AEE camera is much too short, maybe 40-60 yards under my conditions, to make it useful for FPV. I use it to obtain higher quality video stored on the SD card, then download it for video editing. Hope that helps answer your question. Thanks for the comment and watching.
You could have just used a razor blade to split the disk without all that alcohol nonsense
Thanks Devan for watching, the comment, and suggestion. The alcohol is just to remove the DVD dye that can affect the wavelength refraction. Also, I had varying results just trying to split DVDs and CDs with a razor on the edge.
Any updates with your mini spectrometer? Applications on the drone? Did you use the hot lens or remove on your camera? Do share if you used... I've not read about before. Though I recall when working in the lab, i'd get asked if people could use the spectrometers on aircraft and flyby to detect chemicals. Hyperspectral imaging is the better method for doing that or some form of like FTIR microscopy even better. Maybe some other methods too. Interesting though connecting now for use on drones. Thanks for sharing.
@jafinch78 - Unfortunately, I have not been able to work more on experiments with a spectrometer on my drone. You are right, there are already commercially available cameras/spectrometers/spectrophotometers and other sensing equipment. However, these tend to be moderately expensive. My project was more of an amateur attempt and budget operation. I hope to be able to return to woking on this in the near future and will publish new videos when completed. Thank you for your interest.
@@adventuresindroneflying5769 Awesome. I just re-assessed and amazingly found an optical bench for my interferometry projects that I concurrently have with the webcam spectrometer. For drones... I've not thought about much. Hyperspectral imaging more-so I'm aware of... though that's not quite DIY in my plans until I get the simple single spectrometer working. Though you did inspire me to think about. Same goes with ground penetrating RADAR and RDF again as those I've thought about and looked into more with some equipment... though other incidents arising I had to respond to. Would be neat to do sensing, geology and surveys with a drone. With the new licensing requirements... I suppose if was doing drone work, best to plan all the options ahead of time and factor in the design plan. Excellent to see and read about others finding cost effective ways to perform what costs typically significantly more. Keep us posted! Eagerly awaiting. Thanks for the reply and update. Best Regards
@@jafinch78 Sounds like you have some cool projects going as well and I would be interested in your progress. The company I previously worked for was a environmental engineering company and had a small drone program, mainly for geo-surveys, emergency response, and 3D LIDAR mapping. One of our largest clients was the oil and gas industry. A problem they deal with is known as "NORM' (naturally occurring radioactive material) that accumulates in oil and gas processing equipment in the scale build up in piping and can result in dangerous levels of radiation exposure to workers. Back then, workers had to conduct NORM surveys of the equipment using a meter near the equipment and any that exceeded limits had to have restricted access and warning signs. I researched the idea to attach a small alpha-Beta-Gamma detector to a drone and use it to safely conduct the the NORM surveys. I had everything figured out, but couldn't get the company to buy into it unfortunately. Good luck on your projects, take care for now.
If you cut the dvd underwater it doesn’t crack that much
Thanks Jkl Imper, that's a great suggestion and I hadn't heard or seen that posted from anyone else, I will give it a try when I get back to some of the diffraction and spectrometer experiments I want to do.
alcohol 91 or more is ok?
Yes, but be aware, that the alcohol is flammable. Ork in well ventilated area and no open flames. Also wear gloves to prevent the alcohol causing the CD/DVD dye from absorbing into your skin.
And more questions I want to know that temperature of hot water.
@@mpchannel783 To be honest, I didnt measure the temperature of the water, but water from the hot water faucet is what I used.
@@adventuresindroneflying5769 CD ok I can see spectrum light but DVD I can't see I do it same.
@@mpchannel783 the DVD has a clear polycarbonate section that has no grooves to make a spectrum and another section that has the grooves to make diffraction grating and spectrum. Check both sections for correct one. Publiclab.org is a good website for more info about it. Check it out here: publiclab.org/notes/MrBumper/01-11-2015/preparing-a-dvd-r-to-act-as-a-diffraction-grating Hope that helps.
I like how you added details about the stuff you were filming. Very cool!
Thanks! Nicole, I try, lol
Can I use body spray instead of alcohol
I am not sure, I have not tried that but WiKi does list alcohol as potentially one of the ingredients in body sprays: Some common ingredients found in body spray include: butane, isobutane, propane, alcohol, parfum. Body spray - Wikipedia I guess try it, let me know how it works for you and thanks for watching the video.
Can you I dont know
No sale lo mismo
Gerardo - I believe the Ophelia GPS App has changed since I created this video, so features may work different than the version I showed.
@Kool Aid Victor You have to have internet access to your device (cell phone or tablet) to be able to see Google maps GPS or use program path functions. Unfortunately my cell phone and tablet don't have internet unless I am close to a wifi hotspot, so I can't use those functions on my HS700. Hope this helps.
@Kool Aid Victor When I use my tablet and connect to my HS700 drone via wifi, when connecting it says "Checking for Internet access". I would try leaving you phone or device data active, go into wifi and connect to the drone and see if you get same message as I mention above and see if it says it has internet access.
@Kool Aid Victor When I have troubles like that, I turn everything off, turn on device, put battery back in drone, then, turn on transmitter, wait to see signal on transmitter, then connect device wifi to drone and that procedure usually corrects any issues. Then I calibrate the GPS of the drone till lights are green and red.
@Kool Aid Victor I'm not sure about that phone but it should work. I will try and do some research on it and report back. Sorry you are having trouble, hopeful it can be resolved.
Great Vid Bud.
Thanks, hope you got something useful out of it.
What Was Your Range With The FPV?
With the camera that came with the Holy Stone HS 700, the spec range is listed as 400 meters. But with the AEE camera, I didn't test the full range, only about 100 yards since that is the limit of the area I can fly out. Maybe at some pint I will test out what the max range is.
Thanks
🤣 very creative video, thanks for the review!!
Thanks Dom, I try, lol. Did one video completely in Spanish and I don't speak a work of it, thank God for translators.
Very nice Art...exciting! Good job,you know you are getting good when crows try to mate with your drone.
Lol, thanks Verne
