Watch "Class A" Asphalt Roofing Shingles Burn Like Napalm
Feel secure against fire thanks to the "class A" rating on your asphalt shingle roof?
Consider: how can asphalt, metal and concrete slab roofs all have the same fire rating, "Class A"?
Very good question. To get a class A rating, the roof material has to resist for 10 minutes a burning brand of 24" 1 x 4"s nailed together at right angles into a 24 x 24" square.
What this this video shows is what happens a few minutes later.
Worse, the rating does not account for the weak point of the assembly. Note that the resistance of asphalt roofing depends on the sand glued to the top. The overhang at the bottom of the roof exposes an inch or so of the unprotected underbelly of the roofing over the lea...

Trying to Outrun a Firestorm (Paradise, CA, Camp Fire Evacuation Compilation)
Просмотров 6025 лет назад
Terrifying video of chaotic evacuation of Paradise, CA in Camp Fire, as responders, roads, communications, and residents were all overwhelmed. First responders found not a wall of flames, but a horizontal blizzard of ember cast flying far overhead, starting spot fires well behind them. Firestorms are scaling up faster than evacuation capacity can keep up; the entire town of 27,000 was 90% destr...

Adobe Building vs Debris Flow
Просмотров 4475 лет назад
An adobe building resists the January 20, 2017 debris flow near El Capitan on the Gaviota Coast, as a wooden building floats by. The high water was about 2-3' higher than in the video. The adobe building had driftwood on the roof and feet of mud inside and out afterwards, but did not dissolve and is still standing.
Firestorm vs Monolithic Adobe (cob) Wall-fire safety test

Watch a truckload of firewood inflamed by two big fans burn for four hours against a cob wall, followed by thermal shock from a fire hose. 2200± lbs of firewood, fire temp of 1200-1800°F for four hours, hot side wall temp up to 1200°, cool side stays around 61°F. The average heat flux is approximately 26,000 btu/hr*ft2 or 20 kW/m2, the peak flux around 4 times that. A scoping test to buttress a...

Not really relevent. Wonder what happens if you hit a metal roof with an oxyacetylene torch. Issue I see with metal roofs are cavity under metal creating a trap for embers and a wind tunnel. Has to be really a tight assembly with no gap or voids. Otherwise, the metal roofs are worse in wildfires than class A shingles.

People I have a cob house and the powers that be dont want you building with this material because then there no need for their loans and taxes. I built my home for 20K and most of that cost was concrete on the inside floor and counter. This idea that you need a stick framed house for it to be a good home needs to go away. 80%+ around the world still live in earthen structures. Get your hands dirty.

So I am trying to understand what the bricked structure shown on camera is doing for you... Would it be correct to say that it directs the flow and sets the overflow point? And perhaps serves as a leaf mulch harvesting device in smaller rainfall events? Edit: Just realized what that amount of water would do to your soil if let loose without an overflow control like this... Damn! Hahah, that would just erode out whatever you have growing there. So I now assume it is to pacify the water, take out its umph before letting it overflow more calmly into other areas.

I would love to know your opinion on a system that is put together in a classic fashion but with primo materials, my idea is a metal roof over thick rock wool exterior insulation and instead of plywood use a concrete board or exterior drywall type noncombustible sheathing oh and over metal studs

Thanks for this video, is there any more showing the other 3 walls and their differences? I'm planning to build my own earthen house in GT early next year and I'm having a hard time finding any resources on proper earthquake resistance. Most example houses/builds I'm finding are simply monolithic cob or compressed earth in some form.

I live in Tucson and have been stumbling my way towards water harvesting proficiency. Based on Art's work I am doing the following: 1) redoing ALL of my previous installs to make them pressurized systems, and 2) doing installs that would otherwise not be feasible without the pressure and the ease of delivery utilizing green back valves. Thanks Art. Shawn www.AquaVetsAZ.com
