E28 TURBO BUILD (7): Fitting Intercooler
In this video, I finish up all of the intake side of things, including coolant hoses, vacuum hoses, and electrical connectors under the intake manifold.
Then install turbo manifold gaskets for final assembly. I received my Mishimoto intercooler and start cutting the radiator support to mount it in front of the radiator.

Don’t expect a response but I’ve got a issue where my rpm reads double for some reason
@@That0lde36 how do you have the rpm set up? I used an injector signal, then tell the WOT box it is a 6 cyl engine
@@Loudassbmwso I have it set for pin 5 right now I had it set on pin 6 like you did but what’s going on is it’ll read double rpm when I read with it set to injector signal
Switching pins didn’t solve my issue either
I should also mention when the car isn’t running it does in fact say zero 😂
Number of cylinders set correctly ?

@@mrb2349 probably, he wasn’t parking though 😂
@@Loudassbmw I know but it is supposed to brake when it detects obstacles in low-speed maneuvers. My Audi SQ5 has it, slams on the brake if you get too close to an obstacle.
@@mrb2349 maybe he bypassed it by trying to continue to back up
@@Loudassbmw quite possible, there must be an override if you insist. I'm not gonna try with my car lol
What engine arms are you using ? Custom ? Or a mix of different bmw arms
@@VintageAtl i built custom arms. I Wouk have used the ones sold by e28goodies but I am using a 6 speed gearbox so the engine sits more forward than usual
nice video, did you have to use a new crank bolt or reuse the old one? I read on the manual you have to replace bolt everytime
@@amirlandarani8196 I re-used mine and I was able to get to 300ft lb. Didn’t feel it stretch. Do it at your own risk, if the bolt breaks it would be a nightmare

Today kids we learn about proper throttle control. Throttle contol helps stop surges causing the float of the valve causing the keepers to float right out of the spring. The bouncing of the throttle is the issue. Imagine throwing a ball and someone puts a board in your way. You can handle the first throw but when you are doing that times 10 your arm will fail.
I can tell you these engines can handle lots of rev limiter. I would have to say I blame myself for this failure as I drove the engine with the cam timing out of sync for about a year. Plenty of revving throughout and I’m sure that caused some valve float, the keepers didn’t actually fall out. The top retainer cracked in half which made the keepers useless of course. Got the head opened and found the retainer in two pieces and other ones had cracks ready to break as well
Hi! I'm looking into swapping my m20 (520i, Europe, manual) e28 with a m54b30 and the same transmission you're using. I was wondering how it all mounted up (trans mount, bell housing, flywheel & clutch combo), do to happen to have this documented anywhere? Thanks in advance!
If u are using 6 speed you will need to build the mounts. I have my engine mounted a little further forward than the stock m20 was since the transmission would hit the tunnel. Stock clutch from whatever car the trans came from.
Thanks for the quick elaborate response! I see, did you have to make custom engine mounts to be able to move it further forward? I’m thinking about buying the ones from e28goodies, but won’t if they don’t fit with this trans. Were there no issues with regards to the clutch arm/fork/mechanism? Almost seems too good to be true to be bolt-on :).
@@apple95FTW yeah I built my own custom mounts. I chose to build my own because I needed to build the transmission mount anyways. I positioned the engine up enough for the oil pan to be level with the bottom of the subframe, and moved it back as much as I could without cutting the body. It is very tricky getting everything in position and keeping it in position as you mock up the mounts. If you can afford to try the engine mounts from e28 goodies I would just to give you something to go based off of. Who knows, the trans might fit as I’ve seen two different six speeds (one is a lot smaller). Also if you go with building your own keep in mind the driveshaft needs to point exactly to the center support bearing to prevent the driveshaft flex disk from failing prematurely
@@apple95FTW also, I couldn’t believe it would be simple plug and play for the clutch. I used e46 zhp flywheel conversion/ clutch kit. I even reused the stock e28 5 speed slave cylinder and have had no issues. Clutch completely disengages when pressed and feels OEM
@@Loudassbmw amazing job! And sounds quite doable. I think I'll order the mounts just for template purposes (or maybe even to be modified). Keeping everything in position will be a hassle. This is my first ever engine swap, and I'm trying to prepare everything as good as possible. The two trans sizes still share the same type nr? I've got my eyes on one from a 130i (e87), hopefully that's the right size. e46 ZPH stuff is hard to come by here, I do have a stock flywheel from a 330i e46, that might work. In any way, thanks for all the information so far! I'm planning on starting the project this spring, just finished all bodywork and suspension, should be a good base for the swap now. I've added you on instagram, will send you some pics/statusupdates/questions if you're interested.

Hey I know it's been a few months since you uploaded this video but I have questions, what gearbox and clutch setup did you use to 6 speed swap the m52 (I blew my 5 speed and want to go 6 speed but I'm not sure). Thanks
Gearbox and clutch kit from a 2005 530i. The hardest part of the swap is making sure you have a driveshaft that could be shortened to work in your chassis. The e60 driveshaft won’t work at all since it uses a CV rear joint
any picture of the mount you used with your m52 setup ?
