I have the opposite problem……I spend hours thinking about a pattern, shopping for the right yarn and colors, then spend hours and hours making it……I give it to them………….and never see it again! Years later I asked one girl friends NOW adult child about it and she said a week after I gave it to her she gave it to a friend to take back with her across the country and drop it off at goodwill! 😔😔. She didn’t like it and didn’t take it to our goodwill for fear someone else would buy it and I might see them with it one day. I NEVER made anything for anyone again. (BTW…..that had happened one time before that one as well. I made a queen size blanket for the end of their bed…..I didn’t know she viewed crochet and knitted items as “cheap”….poor people’s stuff. 😔😔)

I said $500 for a king size blanket and the lady had the nerve to say I was crazy. When I told her how much the yard cost, my time and how many hours it would take she still thought I was being unreasonable. I asked her how much she thought she should pay, she said $40.

I’m a X-ray, ct and ultrasound tech and I work Fri sat and sun nights. Like 6p-8a and I’m off mon - thurs. In my personal experience doing this shift since COVID shortages, it gets harder to flip. My age may be a factor in this. I’m much older than you. But I hope you find a happy medium and can enjoy L&D rotation.

I had a guy offer me $50 for a queen sized handmade quilt! I couldn't believe it. Heck, there was way more than $100 in fabric, batting & thread, and like you were talking about- labor! I'll bet I had dozens of hours @ minimum $25/hr! People don't realize what handmade entails.

I find it soooo hard to charge a “reasonable “ price…. A sweater like tht I wud want to charge $800-But end up price cutting at $200-$300😢…. I’ve even charged $100 for a sweater jacket just so I dnt loose the sale😢

Damn right! Your time is the most valuable commodity you have and you only have a finite amount of it. Charge people what you are worth!!

This is true for many artists, not just fiber artists. Because it appears to be easier for the artists/craftsmen , their work is undervalued. Also under appreciated is the countless hours and even years of experience and learning necessary to achieve the ultimate product.
