The Flipflopi
Кения
Добавлен 31 окт 2016
The Flipflopi Project is about inspiring positive change to support the global movement campaigning against single-use plastic. Supported by UNEP’s Clean Seas initiative, we completed our inaugural expedition along the East African Coast, from Lamu in Kenya to Zanzibar in Jan/Feb 2019, covering 500km over two weeks in the world’s first dhow made entirely from ten tonnes of waste plastic and covered in 30,000 flipflops - “The Flipflopi”. The Flipflopi is a world first and has captured global attention. We now plan to build a dhow twice this size, that is capable of sailing across the Indian Ocean, from Kenya to Cape Town.

Protecting our mangrove forests
In Siyu village, on Pate Island, part of the Lamu archipelago which is home to over 60% of Kenya's mangroves, the community and Flipflopi have come together to restore the ecosystem thanks to support from CMA CGM.
Siyu dates back to the 15th century and was once a thriving kingdom but now remains neglected. Our macrolitter study showed that some mangrove hotspots in this region receive up to 15 tonnes of plastic waste annually. This enormous build up of plastics is threatening this critical ecosystem and we are finding an overwhelming amount of waste scattered through the forests.
In less than twelve months, we’ve removed 30 tons of waste from the mangroves and replanted almost 9000 seedlin...

Join us and support our work as a Flipflopi patron ♥️ www.patreon.com/theflipflopi One of the last but most important steps before bringing a boat onto the water: SEALING. The common/traditional technique is with "kalafati" (cotton material) that is stuffed in between the planks. The new technique we're piloting on our recycled plastic boats: PLASTIC WELDING. This is quite a process, especially...

We’re half way through our one year pilot project in partnership with CMA CGM Group. It’s been an incredible journey removing 20 tonnes of plastics from the remote Siyu village and helping to restore Lamu’s mangrove forests together with over 150 community members in engaged in clean-ups and household waste collection. Plastics from this remote village, which would typically end up in the ocean...

How we built the world's first recycled plastic sailing dhow
Innovative thinking, the world needs more.
Great experiment but material quality is your problem. Hope that is rectified and your boat is a leader in boat construction.
Great innovation. More experimentation is needed on construction, traditional boat building methods need improvement.
Well done and a brilliant cause. I am working with a former colleague from the University to help you all. Great stuff. Paul
Shallow parabola has low focus? I don't think so. The deeper it is the lower the focus.
porosity sometimes are good things, just look at plastic foam structure your third plastic actually remind me of structure of human bone lightweight yet very strong anyway great works i hope you succeed
Bothers of precius plastic, hi reclicling BOPP-5
Thd ribs and frame are way more dense and heavier than wood, therefore you must reduce the thickness of every one.
9:13 Most traditional sailing boats and cargo ships had ballast stone in the bottom and cargo is loaded loaded evenly and as low in the hull as possible so this never happens.
I haved watch it so many times by now, we can't wait to start building ours. Thank you so much for the inspiration ! 💙⛵️🙏
We are ready to start our Flipflopi sailing boat models now! ⛵️💙
No más plásticos de un sólo uso. Si a más veleros Flipflopi navegando por el mundo 🌎
You guys inspired us, you can be sure of that. Thank you for that! 🙏
We hope to be able to replicate here in Chiloé, Chile sometime soon. Keep up the good work!
Good project
Bravo equipo!!!....esa si es una buena tripulación. Excelente trabajo..... y el maestro Ali es el primero en saltar abordo 😂❤😊.
Team work.... congratulation guys, this is awesome 🎉

I love it 💓, this will be the biggest expedition ever ❤.... the whole world is watching, may the Allah give us more strength to prove it to the world that every slight smart thinking can work❤
Votes of thanks to Flip flopi for standing up to beat the pollution made by plastic, I know it's challenging but it's good to prevent too, I'm fully in support of this❤✊🔥🙏

You do this for the whole world. Bravo!
When people take the responsibility in their own hands on a local level - it’s democracy. Please keep on taking care of our planet.
We wish we can help you build from here. Hope to start ours soon. Keep it up 👌
Great learning by experience....keep up the sails!!! ⛵️
Excellent initiative, keep on growing! 🌱
Wow super action from you !! But *CGM CGM* ..... Big boat mafia, linked with Macron's facist corrupted governement....
Hope you didn't pay much for that plasma cutting? Old mate controlling the height was unique but the cut's were terrible.. Although, can't expect a perfect job from from a homemade 'plasma table'. He was obviously, looking at the ground clamp, using a very cheap plasma torch..? Table was built well though besides the ability to control the height.

Design idea: (actually, two, which will depend on your system design intent) 1) The focal point will tend to spot heat, so instead of projecting directly onto the rib form, create a larger outer round tube onto which the focal area will project, with the form tube placed inside of, and offset away from the focal point, and interstitial void filled with oil, so the oil will be directly heated by the focal point, and distribute the heat uniformly across the inner form tube, basically a tube within a tube with the center tube open at the ends. 2) Perhaps even better, use only the focal point tube, without an inner tube, filled with oil, themostatically circulated via hydraulic hose to an insulated reservoir tank, from which hoses distribute the heated oil to 'jacket' of the mold, which would allow you to create any shape you want, or just heat beams for softening for bending, 'remotely'. This way your 'parts' need not be positioned at the focus, but perhaps on a table or the ground. You would have to allow for a bit of expansion in the system, but a coil of 19mm copper tubing is cheap on Amazon. That way you use your reflector 'thing' to heat the oil, transfer the oil to mold with a 'jacket', and you could have a huge, long reflector, and direct the heat where you need it, via the oil, while upping your overall thermal mass.
Great video thanks for sharing

Great job, very inspiring !😊
Very colorful ! 🎉

🎉 Much success! It is something that I was looking for if the plastic could melt with the sun and I already found you that it is possible! I will also make my design to share it from Mexico!
También estoy en eso. De reciclar plástico de la forma más ecológica ,es una buena idea utilizar energía solar. Sería genial compartir ideas del diseño, saludos de peru
The things are hiding only potato😂😂😂eating!
Plastic is by it's maturenot a rigid material so how Re you going to avoid creep changing the shape of your vessel. This is a serious problem in wooden vessels so it may be a problem here as well.
Cool!
Decarbonation, mobility, efficient project, cheers from France
What is the name of the reflecting thing you use for making parabolic mirror
I also would like to know the brand name of the self adhesive reflective material and where you got it...
Muy buen trabajo.....felicidades !!! 🤩
Jippie! 🥳
This is a great technique. Congrats !
1 in 5 fish has plastic in their guts Solution let’s make all the boats from plastic and get the number to 2 in 5 Imagine if every shipwreck was a plastic boat Then we have the minister for tourism in 1 of your vids explaining how his dirty plastic filled country will be fixed if the lodges don’t use plastic because yea it’s the tourists fault all the plastic in every back ally and street and beach that’s all the tourists that btw spend almost 0 time away from the lodge. How many tourists is Kenya having 50billion a year ? Liberal whites saving the planet😢 help us all we are doomed and channels like this have good intentions but make all the problems so much worse.
What temperature do you use for the welding?
How many tons of glue does the 60tonnes of plastic need to form this ship?
We don't use any glue to form the plastic for the boatbuilding. So that's 0 tonnes :) Or did you mean something else?
