Love the Pixies - I’ve seen them 5 times since 1991...they can be very good live but in general, they’re the kind of band that plays their songs almost exactly the same every night. Kim Shattuck was the type of musician that added charisma to every live performance. She gave them a spark and you can see in this video, she is totally in the moment, for the entire song, absolutely beaming & inspired-smiling the whole time. This is the best *live* version of “where is my mind?” that I’ve ever heard. The audience didn’t want it to end! Charles said “she’s a West Coast extrovert and we’re East Coast introverts” -I get his point, but have you seen the Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers play bass with The Pixies at Echoplex, 2013? (see YT video of Vamos + Where is My Mind) but talk about “West Coast Extroverts”!) -It’s great, extremely visceral, and cool to see. Good for them to at least try it. It works on the song vamos, but Flea bouncing around on “Mind” was inappropriate. (Kim S. knew how to serve the tone of the song appropriately & at least she sang the background harmony -Flea did not) Kim said she did a stage-dive one time and they admonished her for that, saying “the Pixies don’t do that” ...(Jeeze, ‘lighten up, Francis” sounds like a corporate job!). They should’ve lightened up because she had great energy & genuine spark! She might have been a little different from them but that’s what made her great & they benefitted from her -they could use a little spontaneity -it’s just too bad. In my opinion, they made a big mistake in firing her -but that gave her impetus to get back to The Muffs and make two more albums before she tragically got sick with ALS, passing away 10/2/19. My respect for this fat fuck has hit an all-time low. Kim was the best thing that could have happened for him and his tiny band. I'm glad he kicked her out. (Actually, he had his lawyer phone her because his balls are so small). We got some more great Muffs music out of Kimmy before she passed. I'll miss you forever, Kim. :)
