    This whole album was gold. I received it as a gift in 1996 or thereabouts. Cued it up on my ride home from work today. Turned a head or two that's for sure.

    Good work guys. I can't wait to start learning brass. But, for some reason it feels as if it requires lots of air to blow. Due to my conditions, I'm not sure how much air I would need to succeed with each one.

    @sbachm And you took up trumpet playing...Great. I often wonder why this kind of music sounds so sublime and profound, not like, well, how to call it..."less attractive" sounds of the so-called brass band music. Is this because of the chords they use?

    • @sbachm
      @sbachm 3 года назад

      Why this kind of music sounds so sublime and profound? Good question, but difficult to answer. Partly the beautiful harmony of the period, and the use of counterpoint, but I think in a way, it is like Mozart. Outward displays of emotion not being the objective (and perhaps somewhat frowned upon in those periods), yet their genius has it behind a thin screen of formality and elegance which many of us can easily penetrate. For me, listening to these tracks, it's like the composer's hand is reach across the centuries to pull my heart out. These days I play in various groupings, such as Concert Band, but I would really love to play some of this music again before I cash in my chips.

      @@sbachm Thanks for letting me know your notion. The idea of an actual player must be reasonable. Do you mean the chords by “beautiful harmony”? I thought the secret to the sound might exist in the brass instruments’ echo in the chamber or hall they are played, and I tried to find the clue. I listened to these tunes carefully, but it seems they have not much echo. Anyhow, they indeed evoke an elegant atmosphere of the courts. But I don’t understand the small number of view counts! Is it not popular or not known much today?

      @@LudwigvonDrake Hello Ludwig. Well, yes, of course the modern brass instruments and the acoustic of where ever this was recorded certainly enhances this music, but it would sound fantastic with most ensembles. For example, this could be played on a set of Viols, or recorders, but I'm biased.....brass is best. I recall playing through baroque trumpet tunes in a church when in my teens, accompanied by my Dad on the organ. The sound is fantastic and flatters the soloist. Now, you queried the "low" number of hits and comments. Well, this recording was really, really early in the period in which renaissance music became popular played on modern instruments, and of course The PJBE pretty much cornered the market for many years, and yes, they were staggeringly good. However for me, this record is part of my childhood and there is something about the naivety of the recording methodology used which makes this quite unique for me. I saw the PJBE once on the Southbank and Michael Laird was just electrifying. At one point, during maybe the Battle Suite one of the trumpet players (can't recall his name), sneaked up to the back of the hall, and then suddenly he blasted out his part, and it was like a javelin of fire shooting across our heads. PJBE were also my heroes....as you can probably guess. Their recording of the Pretorius suite was another major inspiration.

    Per my comment on one of the other tracks, they are also familiar to me since I was a kid. This record was one of the main reasons I took up Trumpet playing.....which I have just recently returned to. The significance of Maurice Andre playing on this was of course lost on me as a kid, but I now realize that this record is a gem in part because of his playing. I had the pleasure of playing some of these tunes while I was at college in London.
