    Good choice on seed. Italian needs to be cut a minimum of 4 times. If the ground gets wet, the crop suffers big time and we find if the ground gets damaged during cutting etc, it doesn’t seem to recover. You need to be prepared to reseed it every 5yrs. We are moving away from Italian as the weather is getting to a stage now that Italian is not suitable. Good video by the way. What heavy roller did you buy btw?

    • @ActionAgri
      @ActionAgri 2 месяца назад

      Yeah I have heard that , the thing I was worried about was if we got a year like last year and it got waterlogged it wouldn’t recover, that’s interesting you are going back to tried and tested mixtures then. We bought a second hand 36 inch Watson roller really well made although I regret not at least half filling it with water to roll the reseed..

    What a load of crap Milk is soon going to pure poison, dairy men are that greedy and ahead of themselves they can't wait the time for nitrogen to leave the grass and mowing grass with mower lifting slurry from lines left with dribble bar after the last time it was cut.. sooner milk goes back to 16 pence the better, it might educate a lot of farmers

    We went this weekend as the contractor was fully booked last week but the crop was shocking heavy. In the space of a week I never seen grass grow like it. Leaving it that extra week has been a bonus but we are lucky that the weather played ball as another week or more, it would have been a disaster for grass quality. Massive stress relief when you get that pit covered.

    I am impressed with your attitude and drive, I agree with almost everything that you said, I started young too again due to circumstances but I am probably older than your father now. I agree about robots, we also spent a lot of time looking seriously at them as an option but decided to go with a new 16 unit instead basically for the exact same reasons as you ( cost, flexibility and just having the job done and over with twice a day) . I know nothing about poultry but I do agree that it’s important to not have all your eggs ( pun intended) in the one basket. Over a lifetime of farming I have made many mistakes and have plenty of regrets but I have never regretted buying any of the land that I have bought, if you get an opportunity to buy land take it would be my advice to any young farmer out there because if you own land you will get twice as much production out of it than any rented ground and I have rented and still do a lot of land.

    • @ActionAgri
      @ActionAgri 3 месяца назад

      I agree 100% your own land will always be more productive than rented land ( you are better looking at it than looking for it ) I think there is a place for both systems eg if you have business outside of farming maybe a robot is a better way to go because of the flexibility but I am convinced that if your home full time milking parlour is the best way to go!

    Enjoying the channel Just in keeping the cows in part, are you not doubling you’re production costs by being inside all the time ? Silage costs twice what grazed grass does and then you have all the slurry to deal with.

    • @ActionAgri
      @ActionAgri 3 месяца назад

      Thanks glad your enjoying it so far ! I actually find cows easier managed inside and also have less work than grazing ,eg slurry all the time sowing, topping shifting fences , the extra costs are being offset by the extra milk and we are seeing better fertility because of the consistency of the diet and overall better condition of the cows.

    I put in a robot last year after thirty years milking in a parlour and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough milking in a parlour fourteen times a week is pure hardship and misery especially if the weather is bad like at the moment ya have no live at all milking in a parlour

      Let’s just say if ya gave me a million euro or pound I wouldn’t go back some thinks are more important than money life is too short to spend it down in a pit under cows when you don’t have to.i have a de Laval robot and getting the second put in in January first one costs 150 thousand second one cost 100 thousand they run off solar panels on the shed and service kit package is 5 thousand a year which is similar to the cost of a 20 unit parlour there’s nothing to hide it’s all good mate I can tell by your message your stressed out milking in a parlour and you have my sincere sympathy as I done it for thirty years especially in this weather

    • @mikeysky8917
      @mikeysky8917 4 месяца назад

      @@eamonnoneill1340 Not stressed at all. We need 4 robots and I can never get the figures to compare. We have a 20pt and it’s a lot less than £5k a year in maintenance. Only figure I got was from a man with 2 Lely’s and his electric bill was £11k a quarter and that was from his wife. Biggest issue with robots I have is the changing every 10yrs at most with some changing after 6yrs.

    • @eamonnoneill1340
      @eamonnoneill1340 4 месяца назад

      The big think i took from that message is WE which means you must have more that just yourself working on the farm but if you were on your own doing everything you wouldn’t be long about getting robots then it’s all just about labour and labour cost at least a robot is reliable as in will work seven days a week 24 hours a day were as people don’t want to work seven days a week anymore so then your fucked when they want a day off every week

    • @tomflynn5745
      @tomflynn5745 4 месяца назад

      @@mikeysky8917good straight questions there. I've a 24 unit parlour in 10 years and I'd say including liners every year and a service every few years it hasn't cost much more than 5k in total. The service charge for robots I've been reliably told also goes up as the robot ages. Hard to get straight answers alright. Yes probably a better way of life but a big cost is there that doesn't get told.

    One issue with the lagoon, we were informed at a meeting last year to stay clear of a lagoon because in the next few years you will have to roof it or cover it of some sort or face a brutal penalty. We were advised to stick to an above ground store with a roof which ticks all boxes for ammonia control. That was from a guy who will be putting forward the evidence and recommendations for ammonia control in NI. Brutal times to come.

    • @ActionAgri

      What you can get for the lagoon is a “floating cover “ which should cover you

    • @mikeysky8917
      @mikeysky8917 5 месяцев назад

      @@ActionAgri Yes it was mentioned but the guy said there was issues with them. I don’t think they will be happy with any slurry storage unless you can separate the urine from the dung and store independently. Whatever happens, it costs farmers thousands. I have learnt to watch what building developments happens at Greenmount as they always do things first.

    • @ActionAgri

      My advise to the people in charge of regulating farmers is be careful, we can see what has happened in Europe with French and German farmers, farmers can only take so much we need to realise that we have power if we work as a collective at the end of the day it’s us that feed people,not the processors or supermarkets I think people forget that sometimes.
