Lack of proper preparation including fuel system and electrical system . Sure way to damage the starter motor . My FZR 250 3LN1 ( my little lady ) would never go into such disrepair . Mine was overhauled before use and twice a year does track days . My 3LN1 looks magnificent royal blue and gold and is LOVED . The 1000 in this video seens to have carburettor problems , a bit rough and likely would drop out at higher rpm and not get to the 11k limiter .

Took the bodywork of the one i just bought to have a look for any obvious problems, and found the wiring to be both hilarious and depressing. No idea what a previous owner was trying to achieve but the bodgery is everywhere, a wired in (badly) manual switch for the cooling fan, a giant blue box from god knows what wired in (very badly) as a relay for the headlights, bits of an aftermarket alarm and radar detector, the list is endless. :-(

Yamahas of this period dont seem to have the quality of the other makes, my 86 Suzuki GSX-R1100 just seems better built in general, the engine paint always falls of these early Yams but the finish on GSX-R engines is very tough, i guess with all that new tech in the engine and frame they had to save money somewhere :-)

A great buy, the Fzr's are brilliant bikes. I have a small collection of classic Japanese bikes ranging from a 1972 DT3 250 Enduro to a 1990 FJ1200, including a 1991 FZR600, 3HE model, 1994 FZR600R, 2 FZR1000 Genesis 1988. I used to ride a mate's FZR1000 and loved it. I'm currently riding my YZF750R, 1993 model. I need to get my finger out and get one of the 1000's rebuilt. The only disadvantage of the early FZR1000 is the valve shims are a Yamaha only part. And they are 20 valve heads.

Just took the plunge and bought an 87 FZR 1000, very early build number, 000172. Trouble is there is very few parts for these left here in NZ, consumables are easy to get its body work i need, i bought it without seeing in the flesh, only photos, and its got a set of glass fibre fairings lowers and top, and although they are painted and aren't damaged, they won't do for the restoration im about to start. Compared to my 86 GSX-R 1100G the Yamaha doesn't seem as well made, and seems to have aged much worse all thing considered.

@@uhtred7860 I live in Scotland and find some FZR1000 panels are on Ebay. The hardest OE panel to find is the nose cone. I had to get a damaged one and get it professionally repaired and painted. The main fairing sides are available on Ebay. A few years ago I got a NOS fuel tank, just as well as the original was rotten! I have had the bodywork restored and painted. I have just started on the restoration. I have checked, cleaned and greased the rear suspension. I had the forks rechromed, fitted new seals and bushes. I also renewed the steering head bearings. I find the build quality is not too bad, I have owned many Suzuki bikes, but not the early GSXR. You will eventually find the parts, it took me 3 years to get the correct seat for my DT3 Enduro! Good luck with the restoration.
