Tour of Folkestone Harbour at sunset on Suzuki RM 80

Somebody riding a Suzuki RM 80 on a lovely summer's Friday evening in Folkestone, Kent.
Ain't got no gas in it
The 89 model was a big jump in performance
I have a 87 in the same colour, got when I was 25 drow with my mate who had a GSR-1100 Now I'm 50 and my mate have a MV Augusta Dragster, But I keeped my FZR GREAT bike. You always need to hear the fuel pumpe relay clik before it will start. ;)
Rode one, 89-90, until it was stolen. Great bike, and no slouch, even by today's R1 standard. Been there, doing that.
I agree. Mine is a year 90. Same model as 89. Too heavy for twisted roads but super powerful on a good highway. Best of all is... Highest quality!
Lack of proper preparation including fuel system and electrical system . Sure way to damage the starter motor . My FZR 250 3LN1 ( my little lady ) would never go into such disrepair . Mine was overhauled before use and twice a year does track days . My 3LN1 looks magnificent royal blue and gold and is LOVED . The 1000 in this video seens to have carburettor problems , a bit rough and likely would drop out at higher rpm and not get to the 11k limiter .
I think it was the fireblade that killed off the fzr . I love the look of the FZR 1000 the sound handling beautiful bike wish i could have one. I used to own a FZ750 sport's but unfortunately it was stolen in 1990 never to be seen again another beautiful motorcycle.
I bought one recently in bits and nearly got the engine rebuilt. I cant wait to get it running now!
Nice video, I've got an opportunity to restore one myself.
Tit!
Idle circuit in carbs will most likely be blocked with crap, hence crank no start.
First the engine was grey and after a minute it is a black one ???? So youre cheating man
While I had the fairings off, I gave the engine a quick lash of spray paint to cover the bare metal chipped areas.
I hear the dove in the back ground calling.
I've got a 1979 cb900 that I'm doing its had a gsxr750 engine fitted in to it the wiring was all over the place now its warmer I can get it sorted going to make a fun ride when its finished
Nice find. If I found it I would've had to pay top dollar because there would be no way for me to hide how much i wanted the bike. I enjoyed watching your video.
My son is like you. I never take him when I need to haggle. He has no poker face in these situations. Lol
I have 1 here in philippines its my dads bike,
I had the FZR-R Vanes and Hines edition. Wasn't fast but it always ran well.
get some fairings on it and restore it properly .... basically you got a "streetfighter dog" and you have done nothing to it lol .... WTF
Fairings are in the shed. This is exactly how I want it for now, prefer the naked street fighter look!
Hi. In part 2 subject you mentioned how to start without engine damage, unless I missed that im sure you didn't mention it as yet...
Apologies I forgot to include that part. I added a shot of 2 stroke oil into each cylinder through the spark plug hole first, to weep/bed into the rings for a while to ensure it was nicely free before attempting to turn over.
@@kevinchalmers8361 ah, thanks for that Kevin. Makes sense to let it soak at least overnight or a day or two to loosen up rings and free it. Hows your fzr running after all that
What happened to your bike?
what happened to your bike as MOT check says its not on the road
Took the bodywork of the one i just bought to have a look for any obvious problems, and found the wiring to be both hilarious and depressing. No idea what a previous owner was trying to achieve but the bodgery is everywhere, a wired in (badly) manual switch for the cooling fan, a giant blue box from god knows what wired in (very badly) as a relay for the headlights, bits of an aftermarket alarm and radar detector, the list is endless. :-(
Ive never seen an 87/88 FZR Genesis that has managed to keep its engine paint on, (apart from the odd minter) the finish on these bikes is cheap :-(
Yamahas of this period dont seem to have the quality of the other makes, my 86 Suzuki GSX-R1100 just seems better built in general, the engine paint always falls of these early Yams but the finish on GSX-R engines is very tough, i guess with all that new tech in the engine and frame they had to save money somewhere :-)
Wish my FZR that i just bought looked like this. I did in the Digital photos that i bought it based on :-)) But when it turned up in the van and i got a good look......:-( Still, its a project, no rush.
Ich Liebe das Bike habe 3 Stück davon
NEVER crank a starter more then 5-6 seconds. Allow 15-20 seconds between tries. This guy just killed starter life by 50% MINIMUM.
For sure. Not meant to run continuously. Big trucks won't let you keep cranking like that. Mine kills the circuit if it gets too hot. Must be a sensor in there
For sitting that long it's better to take it apart from the beginning. No good to turn it with all that sludge in the oil and corroded bearings. Just a lot of unnecessary wear
love the natural backsound. #birdsinging
Best thing you can do after fzr sitting for a while. Turn the ignition on and off until the fuel pump catches up. Then spin it over.
Good hint!
Enjoying the videos man would love to see more.
Prob best of his time
You can't beat the sound and smell of two strokes. I used to visit Folkestone often while doing my job as a coach tour driver, unfortunately staying at the Burstin hotel. I have a road legal Yamaha DT3 250 Enduro in my collection of classic Japanese bikes, I love riding it, it's so much fun.
I can buy one of these for 200 pound.its a H reg.but theses a prob with the starter motor.
The bike sounds great but I would want to restore it to standard condition, it may be difficult to source plastics though.
I’m always actively looking for a cheap set of fairings so it could be reverted back to stock one day if desired. Hard to find though these days as you say!
Great video!
A great buy, the Fzr's are brilliant bikes. I have a small collection of classic Japanese bikes ranging from a 1972 DT3 250 Enduro to a 1990 FJ1200, including a 1991 FZR600, 3HE model, 1994 FZR600R, 2 FZR1000 Genesis 1988. I used to ride a mate's FZR1000 and loved it. I'm currently riding my YZF750R, 1993 model. I need to get my finger out and get one of the 1000's rebuilt. The only disadvantage of the early FZR1000 is the valve shims are a Yamaha only part. And they are 20 valve heads.
I love the Five valve head Yamahas, Ive got a1FN model FZ750 with early FZR 1000 crank and rods in it bumping it up to 888cc, its got WP rear shock and a genuine Yamaha race kit full exhaust, and 17 inch wheels off a YZF Thunderace.
Just took the plunge and bought an 87 FZR 1000, very early build number, 000172. Trouble is there is very few parts for these left here in NZ, consumables are easy to get its body work i need, i bought it without seeing in the flesh, only photos, and its got a set of glass fibre fairings lowers and top, and although they are painted and aren't damaged, they won't do for the restoration im about to start. Compared to my 86 GSX-R 1100G the Yamaha doesn't seem as well made, and seems to have aged much worse all thing considered.
@@uhtred7860 I live in Scotland and find some FZR1000 panels are on Ebay. The hardest OE panel to find is the nose cone. I had to get a damaged one and get it professionally repaired and painted. The main fairing sides are available on Ebay. A few years ago I got a NOS fuel tank, just as well as the original was rotten! I have had the bodywork restored and painted. I have just started on the restoration. I have checked, cleaned and greased the rear suspension. I had the forks rechromed, fitted new seals and bushes. I also renewed the steering head bearings. I find the build quality is not too bad, I have owned many Suzuki bikes, but not the early GSXR. You will eventually find the parts, it took me 3 years to get the correct seat for my DT3 Enduro! Good luck with the restoration.
@@alistairshaw3206 Bit of an update :-) The FZR is now in a million bits and have started buying all the bits i need, which is alot...The bodgery on this bike is epic, and.. because it had fibreglass fairings all the important stuff that is screwed to the inside, like the ducts and the plastic infills that go between the fairing and frame were missing :-( managed to find most of the stuff, in varying condition on ebay, but the price.... :-( Just getting the alloy bits vapour blasted, and the steel subframe and engine frame rails sandblasted and powder coated along with the wheels. Still no nose cone tho. Have decided to join FB just for the FZR and GSX-R groups, so maybe someone on they can help. Hows your one going?
@@uhtred7860 My first bought 1000 was full of bodges, the wiring was melted due to 100w bulbs in both headlights! They had cracked the glass too! It had the worst Kenny Roberts paint job ever. It's still in bits. My other 1000 is a rolling chassis with rebuilt suspension and brakes, I'm a coach tour driver and am too busy at the moment, so it's on hold. The engine was badly painted, I need to respray it and check the valve clearances. There was a black nose cone on Ebay, but they wanted £200 for it. I need to clear out my shed before I put the Genesis in to finish it during the winter, when I'm not so busy.
Great bike miss mine
This was the last bike my dad had before he passed away
80s bikes were the best I loved the rd 350f of late 80s and the fzs and fzrs.
私はFZR1000に33年、乗り続けてます👍
My first road bike man I loved it sold it daughter was on her way 🏍️😭
Nice video dude! 🤙🏾⚡
Bro I got the fzr 600 “92”.....where the hell can you get parts for it
Dealer will stock or can order far more than you probably think. Look online for forums and recommendations for good aftermarket suppliers too.
600 was the only one with a steel frame I think. I always wondered why. I snagged my 1000 cheaper than most of the 600's near me too.
Did you even change the oil in it after it sat for 16 years before starting it ?
He said he did
I hope so! 😕
You could have simply primed the carbs when you had the airbox off it an it would have fired up as long as nothing major was wrong with it. do you know what I mean by priming the carbs ?
Care to explain?
Especially on downdraft ones like that. You can pour a bit of gas in like on a car. Even some quick start but I don't like that stuff personally. Seen some blown up engines before from loading up on that stuff then suddenly a spark and boom!!
@@conradpaul6100 pour a little gas right in the carb and then crank. Careful of backfires though. Can spit gas and fire out so be prepared and don't have your face right in there.
@@mikeholland1031 nah, that's not the issue. My bike doesn't have spark on cylinder 2 and 3.1 and 4 is fine tho. But the spark on cylinder 2 and 3 comes and go... Veery weird
@@conradpaul6100 Sounds like a coil issue, the coils fire 2 cylinders each, one coil fires cylinder 1 & 4 and the other 2 & 3, I would get that coil tested and/or make sure all the connections are good.
Why ruin the starter ? You go through the bike first then once you know everything is done you hit the starter button and it starts ! If you was caught doing that in the bike shop i worked in you was kicking stones up the road !
Steve Lamperta the bike had fresh oil in before attempting to start. I’m no mechanic, just something I am interested in, kinda learnt about some things at the same time and it worked. Nothing broke. Lucky I don’t, or have any intention of working in a bike shop then! That’s not my trade. Bikes are just a hobby on the side for me.
Hahaha I would never leave my bike in your shop if you think the starter is ruined after that 😂
Had an '88...very fun bike.
Nice bike mate!
nice video picking up a 1987 fzr1000 in a few days (im in australia) not alot of videos off these showing anything on youtube
Great, bulletproof bikes. I'm sure you won't have many problems at all. Sadly I sold this a few months ago, but I know the new owner and its gone to a good home. Yes theres loads of information about the EXUP models, very little about the Genesis, I suppose they only made them for 2 years though. Hope your project goes well, i'd be intrigued to see it!
@@kevinchalmers8361 yea i hope so too if i find anything wierd i need help with and cant find info on i may give you a pm on youtube ahahah the one ive got only has 38000km on it rebuilt at 27000 with papers ffirst owner was a mechanic second owner has had it for 10 years rode it 4 times a year then got too old too ride and is selling it so i really got it for a steal
Hows the parts situation for these over in Australia? Just bought one here in NZ and need some things.
Brilliant best of luck ride safe mate lovely ol' girl 👍
Well done mate I've been feckin around with old bike's for years and all the basic pre fireing up procedure is spot on,, I seen one on eBay oh no,,, I'm 55 now and happy with my little 25 year old diversion 600 🤪
Thanks for the comment, I love nothing more than to pick up old unloved bikes and bring them back to life! I have done a few more since this, I should have made some videos but due to my lack of stable workshop space at the moment, its been difficult. I will be buying another bike project in 2 weeks though, so I will update on here with what I end up getting, and the progress. I am looking at getting a 600 next, mainly because they are cheaper! The 1000 was a lovely machine but the extra weight, made it feel almost indifferent to a 600. I'm sure thats different on more modern bikes where 1000's weight basically the same as a 600!
@@kevinchalmers8361 Brilliant looking forward to your next project indeed old 1000cc bikes are hefty lumps I had a GS1000g and it let you know if it wasn't happy in the bends 🤪
My friends mom has 1 in her garage I may buy for $1000 with a bunch of really nice old cars including a lamborghini miura
Going to be a great bike when all done.
