I decided to become a doctor even though it was never my passion and this is my experience so far
so many of you have followed along my journey through medical school for nearly two years now. You've seen the ups and downs, highs and lows as well as the little pieces of advice that I've been able to squeeze from my experience. But none of you really know the full story, my story as it relates to medicine. I've hinted at it a couple of times but today I'm sitting down to walk you through the entire journey if you care. I owe it to you guys as my subscribers and supporters and most importantly, I owe it to myself to be honest.
After this, I will not be mentioning this topic for a while because I am trying really hard to separate my identity from medicine. I am more than what I study and ...

So happy I watched this video today. I’m so proud of you, Daniella! Your journey is truly amazing because you walked this journey through every inch, discovered your passion and made it a place you could navigate life and while still on this same journey, you discovered more of who you are. Continue to build with God because He is the creator of our destiny (Jeremiah 1:5) and He will continually guide and lead you through every step of this life journey. You got this! ❤

Take me as a big Sister. Do MBA and go into administrative roles in healthcare? 😊 Or MBA in HR and become an HR in health or related fields? I know a doctor who became a top administrator in the health field. Apply for jobs everywhere. Nigeria and outside Nigeria. You can even do PhD in Public Administration and become commissioner of health or minister of health? You can start your MBA online now. NOUN? Best of success. 😊

This is so relatable. When I am in surrounded by others in my field, I realise just how differently I feel about the topic compared with them. At conferences, my peers are so excited to discuss new findings and I don't share that enthusiasm. For a while I thought it was imposter syndrome, but I think it is just that I may not be in the correct field for myself.

Your Mom would understand. The skills we get as Drs is transferable. What is more important for her is that you are successful. You have learned hardwork, focus ,logical and critical thinking and problem solving. Burnouts are like the snake changing their skin or the eagle shedding its beak. Trust the spirit of God, He would lead you aright. We know in part and see in part.

Thanks, Daniella, for this lovely video. As a 5th year medical student, I share the same sentiment with you especially about the health care system and how bad it is, overall, I think every medical student in Africa face this issue and we hope that by the time we become house officers' things change. Personally, I had always wanted to become a doctor, in grade 11 I developed passion for computer engineering, told my mother and all hell broke loose, she was calling every family member to convince me to do medicine and eventually I gave in , took the wassce exam and applied for medical school and the rest is history currently I am exhausted being in medical school, but this is where I want to be and what I love doing. I think the exhaustion comes from being in school for so long, and the hope I have is that the health care system will change with our generation. I truly wish you the very best on your journey and one thing is for sure, it will get better and you will be fine.

12:33 that’s a bitter pill you’ll have to swallow…hard coz it’ll not be easy, I’ll tell you from experience 14:07 very very toxic work environment in general that’s the exact same reason why I have a lot resentment towards healthcare . It is ABSOLUTELY nothing like “house” or “greys anatomy” or even the foreign articles and video resources on RUclips about how much a doctor makes or foreign medical vlogs. It’s really the ghetto out here and that was a big culture shock for me🥲😂 16:45 that’s very true😂 another good thing about it is that it’s an easier means to JAPA but that’s literally all there is to it 19:44 I have been shouting this so much. The knowledge of career options is just tooo narrow 20:34 1000% you must have realllly thought this video through.👏👏👏 I really hope it gets pushed out to the right person out there most likely someone fresh out of secondary school in Nigeria so that they can either avoid it or be well equipped to going further into it and i’m definitely going to subscribe to follow along in your journey. Well done👍

  • @vee-uch

omg…Everything you said is what I’m currently experiencing. I have had a verrrryyy veryyyy similar experience and I’m still in it coz yes I’m done with medical school but I still HAVE to do the “hidden course” 😪 and it’s not just the housejob and the NYSC coz if you are not careful and resolute in your decision to stop after those 2 you might give into the pressure of residency and choosing a specialty😂….it never ends…but I have decided to at least finish up the extra 2years so I can have an active certificate (license) as compensation for the 8yrs I spent in med school coz there’s not much I can do about it than to face the consequences of my choice and take responsibility for it. The only difference between your story and mine is that I’d always been saying I wanted to be a doctor right from childhood so you can imagine how much of a disappointment and shock it is to my parents

Wow i am 17 and i relate to tour story a lot. I have eays wanted to be a doctor because when i was younger i was in the hospital all the time and I just wanted to do what the healthcare workers did. My dad was an engineer and my mom was a nurse so i was drawn towards biomedical engineering but the schools i wanted to go to did not offer that. So now i am left having to choose while also realizing how toxic the healthcare field is.
