Brain Drain w/ Connor McCann
США
Добавлен 4 июн 2021
As a graffiti writer in San Francisco during the 90s, I experienced a lot. I met a lot of good people, made some great memories and most important of all, I got up. These are my stories from the world of graff, past and present.
San Francisco Graffiti In The 90's: Bus Drivers & Beef (With Bus Drivers)
In my last installment of my San Francisco Graffiti In The 90s series, I discussed the life of a Bus Hopper. Central to this experience was dealing with bus drivers and while I touched on them briefly, I felt there was more to say. In this episode, I discuss the culture of San Francisco in the 90s that many bus drivers came from, dealing with drivers of different lines and how a friend and I found ourselves beefing with a bus driver.

San Francisco Graffiti: Bus Hopping In The 90s
Просмотров 10 тыс.Год назад
In a previous video on the Brain Drain channel, I discussed the graffiti scene in San Francisco in the mid to late 90s, which was a golden era for writers and art. However, I feel that there is one part of this story and era that has been touched on less than others, and that is the bus hopping scene of the time. And who better to tell that story then someone who used to bus hop themselves? Thi...

In this video, host Connor McCann, in a deconstructed approach, discusses life in the Bernal Heights and Mission Districts of San Francisco in the 1990s, as well as his connections to and participation in the elements of Hip Hop, particularly graffiti. Connor discusses the landscape, the writers, the crews and the desire to bomb. This is the first in a collection of videos on the topic, with mo...
Nice video, brought me back, It's a good thing to see the appreciation of graff in the 90's, one luv!! ATACKONE KGM CREW
Much love 🙏🏻
As a Peninsula kid who used to love to go to the city in the mid 90's to cop doses and Indo in GG park all I got to say is fuck the Guardian Angels.
Hey when will you make more videos
I post on tiktok 4 to 5 times a week
Yooo man I just came over from you TikTok’s if you can you should try and do more of these longer videos I love the longer videos but much love man!!!
Yea I remember tagging in the 90s, there were some great tagging crew battles back then, like AHB vs SWT was a crazy battle. Especially when both crews ended up on the same bus. 38 Geary bus
Oh shit I remember battling ACB too daymn lots of memories NeVeR1 AHB RCM ABF shoutout to everyone Forreal, the beef was real back then but it’s game recognize game and we end up being Koo with a lot of the other side
shake, mirez, robo, attak, myk, jul, tom mosh, so many overlooked street writers from the early to mid 90s and thats not even getting into the bus hoppers
I remember a bus driver kicking everyone out except for the "taggers"..@ Silver and Mission..and decided to take us straight to YGC. (44 bus) 😂..we had to break the emergency door release to get off as bus was moving. I dont blame the "hero" bus driver. We were wild.
Damn! I wonder if dude had been waiting to do that to some writers and yall were the ones 😅
Man..thank you for memory lane..and bringing up how shit really was in the SCO
You're welcome 🙏🏻
Hell yeah...boom box in back of the bus was mandatory..lol
Alot of taggers became gang bangers too
Man..was bus hopping in 94-99..FLT..MCA crew. Scribers, streakers, minis..on panels, outside the window on side of bus. Hit the 44 Oshoughnessy, then the 48 Quintata, the the 14 or 49 back up to outer Mission...sometimes hit thr 24 Divis...or stay on..and hit the 52 Excelsior..then the 15 third or 49
Tagged in an apple store elevator today and one of the workers tried to press me
What happened after?
@@braindrainconnor i just dipped
@@braindrainconnor it was in a big ass mall too so they had mad security and i wasnt tryna get arrested over one tag
Great video. Keep posting more SF graff videos. 🔥
Thank you 🙏🏻 I got some more coming soon on here
Its rare to see people doing walkdowns on the new muni busses these days. I still do it though i dont care.
This shit was so accurate. I didn’t hear a single fib.
Appreciate it 🙏🏻
I'm a SD Writer and it's crazy I know a Muni Bus Driver who's a Writer lol y'all know who it is??
Tbh there's a few ex writers who drive busses now 🤷🏻♂️
"Tom Mosh" "twist" "Ruby" "Spoo" and so many more, 91 to 97 SF. Good times, was living in north beach going to SFAI back then.
Two words "Tom Mosh" if you know that then you were there, i was and "Spoo" was seen. Ride that 30 Stockton down to market, grab the 38 geary and out to ft funston, then walk it down GG park to the McDonald's on end of haightful st. Then ride back down to van ness, grab another up and around back to north beach.
30 Seconds used to let us tag once we got to Top of the Hill. We used to tag him up too! He was mad chill. We always respected his bus when we stepped on because you knew you could throw up the best tags once we reached Daly City.
Uh...no Graff. Boring.
Lights would turn off 30 seconds
Yup I remember 30 back in the day . there was also another. Driver called UFA that let you hit up the bus.
What would UFA do?
@@braindrainconnor exactly
Great stuff dude, I am 50 now and way less into taggers as I just see them all as peasants wrecking everything they're allowed to be near but love yer explanation of our lives as feral littles. good job
I would like to touch on the subject now, there were multiple muni buses like the ones that were around in the 90s that were saved for historic preservation. Thease buses are unfortenetly stored outside and people have graffiteied them beyond recognition. Please if you know thease buses, there are 5 and stored outside, please tell people not to graffiti them further. Thease buses are buses that have been saved to operate in muni's historic fleet and 3 were active historic buses that until they were graffitied were operated in special service commerating muni's first articulated buses, By all means tag regular city buses, we can afford to clean that, but thease buses dont have any money given to them and we can't afford to improve it, please guys dont tag historic vehicles, the rest are fine, us here at the muni shops dont really mind that, its easy to clean, but the historic fleet dosent have any money to be cleaned. Thanks for reading this
CLOUT ONE RTMOB COPYRIGHT 1989
I heard 30 Seconds passed away recently. I never ran into him on Muni, but I ran into him a few times at various events around the city. I always felt like he may have been a writer when he was off the clock.
Acts df

Thanks for sharing your perspective. You have a real talent for speaking on a topic, both scripted and off the cuff. I wish you had more graff videos.
I appreciate it 🤝🏻 I have been focusing on Tiktok the last year and I have maybe 50 graff videos on there you can check out
Wow classic history of 90s My husband cleaned muni graffiti at balboa station ty nu subbie
Shout out to your husband, that's a tough job
That ain't beef bro we whooped on bus drivers that's beef
Man 30 seconds did not pass away that's my guy Jaime do ur homework b4 saying shit like this we bus hopped in the late 80s early 90s u said 98....98 I was on my way to the pen...so I don't know to many writers from that era
That’s right he’s not gone he’s alive and well still livin wild though
Man some of yall wouldn't even dare jump on the 14 cuz yall know yall was getting fapoa with the quikness!! Dfunk cr!!
I forgot to mention big VictorVonTwompski that dude was a maniac on Muni hittin full trains…..and another dude that been Rockin Muni forever is Walker KCM he keeps it lit. Track and Prayer HBK still doin their thang big in the city. Good to see young Afroe TdF back him and Redek used to kill the 14s with tags on the top of the electric lines. PHINE and LAFER BST also killed muni had shots on every bus in the fleet in 2003. DEKO and Tips FBS, HEARock and NADE GB also big on Muni.
Shout out to all those folks you named, there's some very familiar names there. Especially Afroe TDF who was up like crazy, Nade who is a friend of the guy I talk about in the beefing with bus drivers video and Prayr, who i was tagging with when I first got my start and just talked to last week. There was nothing like those times
S/O to THA KLICK! Big homie SV1 Sick Vandal, Floe TK, RIP Graf and Seer TK, both those dudes went from bushoppin to moving big weight True Kingpins. MENT TK was one of the original big timers aka Browski…..Schooled a bunch of the youngsters from tagging, banging and slanging. Much respect to my OGs who paved the way CHIEF and Skew ICP…Task TDF HTS, Hear1 KCM, AXIS and FORM ARMobb…LAKE PE, Roler YDV, SuF TDFlock, Leaf TDF, Mayhem, Proof151, TASE Tdk, CASK 640! RIP Jeezy JADE, Archogg GBP, SEER, FEARdog, GRAF, BUCK50, SPESH, ORFN, and so many others we lost along the way.
The Og homie AXIS ARM BVD laced me on a ton of sick old bushoppin battles DankMob vs TK….the late homie SEER TDf TK schooled me on hella shit from growing trees to Rockin yards….straight SF history and it’s dope to see the young generation keepin the tradition alive same handstyles from the 90s.
That's what's up And I agree with 100%
Bus Smashin Time! 2000-2006 was another epic time……I remember taggin along w the homies and we got filmed for the BST segment for peice by peice one of my best memories…..RIP Flash/Ryda RIP Doja RIP Arch RIP Seer TDF RIP Feardog TK RIP Graf RIP Jaderoc
That segment for Piece by Piece was really dope and I was hoping they were going to get moreso into bushopping than they did, but it's understandable. RIP to everyone you named. Definitely remember seeing Dojah, Seer and Graf up a lot. Remember that TK vs FCK battle especially in the late 90s
Yea PbyP had so much to cover hard to cram it all in two hours…..there was a few bushopper videos that came out after like “Always Juicy” from AJmob that was similar to the BST segment and same circle of kids in that generation. There’s a few others on RUclips from the younger kids.
@@AG-is5vv Right on, I'm gonna check them out. I don't really post on here much right now, but I post about SF Graff in the 90s every week on TikTok, with a focus on bus hopping
Hey, do you have any pictures or videos of your tags or anything?
Posted a one flow today on tiktok
@@braindrainconnor thank you
You went to Wallenberg? Rip mR Matranga ! great video by the way !
Yeah I was there 97-99 and damn, RIP Mr. Matranga, I hadn't heard he passed 😞
Oh, "LATE NIIGHTS"!
Irish guys from the sunset. Better known as "THE BROS", "THE PODS" OR "THE SUNSET BOYS"... L😂L cause YES! THATS WHAT THEY DID. GET DRUNK AND PUNCH PEOPLE FOR NO REASON. raid keggers and steal the keg, mob on people etc... Not it. Fk em. 😂
"BACK DOOR!"
Yo... Talking about drivers... I finally met UB40 years later and guess what? That fool is a MUNI BUS DRIVER!
Lmao that's what's up! Used to see UB40 running all the time in the 90s and he's definitely not the only ex tagger to put on the muni jacket later in life. I know someone currently who fits that description 😅
Yo, as an 80s writer who youll see talking about the birth of the one flow in the book history of american graffiti and also in piece by piece (OH, ON HOME TURF TOO. LOL)... Ill agree, the 90S WERE the golden era of bus hopping. I remember seeing busses from my car in the mid 90s thinking "DEAMN, LOOK WHAT WE STARTED!" And yeah, you pretty much nailed it. Respect to C STREET! I grew up in the mission and then the Richmond. My lines were the 14, the 38, the 43 and 44. Props. This was good!
Yo I appreciate this a lot 🙏🏻 Much respect back and respect especially for laying down the culture that I came to love at a pivotal time in the city's history. I'm glad I could do the time and the topic justice as it was so special to me and many others
LOVE wathcing your vids while sketching
Thank you, I appreciate it 🙏🏻
Could you do a video on tie or orfn if you knew them??
Rest in Peace to both Tie One and ORFN, but sadly I never got to meet them. Used to see them up like crazy though
Stories are great we appreciate the knowledge bro
Thank you man, that means a lot to 🙏🏻
J - Church! Grew up on 29th. 80's Baby
That's what's up, grew up a couple of blocks from you
@@braindrainconnor Nice! I heard you mention holly courts. I was right by Mitchell's Ice cream. Day street was my park. Lots of graffiti at the noe courts before gentrification
@Bullish23 I spent time at Day St Park for sure and if you grew up near Mitchell's then we probably passed each other on the street a bunch of times.
Amen !
🙏🏻
You HAD to hit the yards in the early 90s or you really weren't seen as dope. Bus hopping was a way to hit Muni not in the yards. Yea, it's still called MUNI. I also bombed Masonic yards, so the 43s were crushed. Good video.....BVD crew
Right on, thank you 🤝🏻
Damn, this was a dope video. I'm from the PNW but was always interested in the Frisco/bay area scene, always like bus/one flows too.
Right on John, I appreciate it 🙏🏻
