Comparing Different Kinds of Wood Stain (UK Products!)
In today's video, I'm comparing Water, Oil and Gel based wood stains! I wanted to see how different types of wood stain perform on soft and hard wood, as well as trying gel stain, a product we don't have easily available in the UK.

Transforming an old Victorian chair into a stunning accent chair!
Would any of these work on varnish?
Hi, they all should! One of the layers was a thick polythene varnish so expect similar results.
Best comparison on RUclips. Better than the American bloggers who I'm not sure I can trust to be totally honest as to the results and how easy they are to use.
Thank you, that’s very kind of you! So many of the US products aren’t available in the UK and Europe so I thought a deep dive of UK products would be useful!
Thank you
You're welcome!
I either had the same exact dresser, or one very similar, and of course it’s made better than anything today, but that’s not saying much… it had light, flimsy wood, and the whole thing feels like the legs are gonna give out whenever you try to roll it (it’s basically the furniture equivalent of “a watermelon on stilts”)
Sometimes even older well built pieces can fall apart! It could be that the joins need fixing or reinforcing.
Thanks this video was informative and clear look forward to another video like this would be good using other products like .paint preditor heavy duty .spear and Jackson paint stripper .bartolin tx10 .polycell paint stripper maximum strength .bio strip 20 all purpose .langlow strip and lift . Crown strp max professional strength All the product listed above can be found on amazon uk Loom forward to sone more content like this 👏
So Paint Predator Heavy duty, Langlow strip and lift, TX10, and Bio Strip 20 are all the same as the B&Q Diall. The Polycell Max strength is in the video at 00:07:11. Crown STRP max professional strength is the same as Jenolite. The only one with a different formulation to anything in the video is the Spear and Jackson paint stripper. It has a chemical in common with Diall, but with a couple of additions so I may give it a go.
I am hoping that some of these "winners" are sold in the US, but if not, I can do as you suggested and look up the ingredients list and find its twin here in the states. Thank you for doing the hard work for me, but can we keep this between us, my husband hates when I use his pristine work shop for one of my projects, so having the right stripper and getting it done quickly, the only thing left in his shop will be a slight odor as he has an exhaust fan system. I will never tell him what stripper I used unless he begs. He is competitive about everything.
great vid ! thank you ! most helpful
Thank you!
wow fantastic
Thank you!
Thank you so much, this is really helpful 🙏
You're very welcome!
Nice. What Linda paints are these?
They’re a mixture of Rustoleum furniture paint and Craig & Rose.
@departmentofreinvention thank you so much!
Thank you so much for doing this just what I was looking for....Is it possible to do one with the names of the stripper under each test patch? Thanks, brilliant video and fab channel!
I’ll write up a blog post with them and post a link ☺️
Thank you
Just found your page. I've been looking for someone from the uk to follow for ages. 😄 This piece is stunning 😍, thank you so much for sharing your work. Looking forward to catching up on all your content
That’s really sweet of you to say! I’ve definitely not found so many UK accounts in the furniture upcycling/restoration area! If there’s any videos or topics in particular you’d like to see, do let me know!
There's a reason these liquid strippers are called wallet strippers, and that's because on older layers of paint they don't work. 4 hours and litre of nitromors and a tiny two foot square area of door has been stripped of just one layer of paint. Save your money and your time and just use a blowtorch or a heatgun, there might be a case for using the liquid around glass which might crack in heat, but after the evil people in power forced companies to stop using chemicals which work they are no longer worth buying.
They’re definitely not as effective as they used to be. For wood work or walls, something like Kling Strip or Peel Away can definitely be more effective.
In the final shot when viewing the stripped wood don't forget to label them but it seems the aerosols are the best way forward.
Great video; very informative. Hard to believe how expensive all of these strippers are. I see it in my local shop too and the raw materials are really cheap.
Thank you! Yeah some of them are unbelievably expensive
Such a brilliant video! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely stunning!
Thank you so much!
A useful video. Many thanks
You’re welcome!
At 16.40, what is the paint stripper you use for stripping that particular piece off. I know you've done a lot of hard work but is there anyway you can do maybe a screenshot and add each square and what stripper was used when you put it in the middle of the square so we can see which paint went to which square? I have permanent chemo brain and trying to keep up with this video I got very lost
Hi! If you look in the video description, 16:40 is the Hycote paint stripper ☺️
This is perfect! So helpful and exactly what I needed. Thank you for taking the time, effort and expense, so we dont have to! Much appreciated 😊
You’re very welcome! It’s something I was curious about so I thought I should share the knowledge!
Geez!! Thanks a million! 👌🏻
Which one of these would be ideal for removing oil paint on a concrete wall ??🙏🏾
None of them! Try either Peelaway or Klingstrip for removing wall paint.
Thanks for the very helpful video. Lovely to see your expert work and see the super result. Inspired me to think of tackling a similar precious family chair :)
Thanks so much! You should give it a go!
Thanks so much. Definitely going to do it! Thanks for showing your brilliant job again!
if it isn't capable of messing you up then it isn't a good paint stripper its a paint stripper is supposed to be able to kill ya. As a decorator I can tell you that there all crap and very expensive
Ahaha, you’re not wrong! Just trying to figure out the best of the ones that won’t kill me!
starchem
That’s only available for professional use due to the Methylene Chloride, this video focuses on commercially available paint stripper.
Thanks for this video, it's so helpful! Out of interest, do you think your recommendations would work on the removal of Osmo Polyx oil from engineered wood flooring? I have tried some paint strippers but cannot shift it. Any recommendations would be appreciated!
So Polyx Oil is designed to really soak into wood so it’s quite tough to remove. Your best bet would be to use a wax remover, there’s a few different ones available. Make sure to keep the area ventilated and work with a mask! And test it on a less visible area first.
Thank you so much! I've been trying to solve this problem for a year! I'll look for a wax remover then 🤞
@@JohannaWard-p9m no problem! Using a nylon scrubbing brush will help get it out of the grain too. Some people recommend wire wool, but if the wood is oak it can leave black rust marks.
Very helpful, thank you so much!
You’re welcome!
I've always used Nitromors myself. Works well. However I'll switch it up after this vid
I think NM works well with reapplication, so it’s not a total loss. It’s also really good for detail work.
This is beautiful! How does the video not have more views???
That’s very sweet of you to say! I appreciate the comment ☺️
Very well done. Refreshing! The Shabby Chuc .... is sooooo old. That's not to say all the techniques have expired, just the "looks like splotches of bare wood."
Thank you! I’ve never been a huge fan, I don’t like fake antique look.
Wish more RUclips videos were this clear and helpful. Thank you!! Could you share a picture of each container lined up next to their test strip??
Really enjoyed video. You did a beautiful job. Look forward to more Thanks
Thank you so much!
Thanks for making the video. Im was surprised by paint predator as it gets pretty bad reviews online. I've gone for rhe Home Strip product as even though it wasnt the best in the video it still performed well and seems to be the best for the the environment.
Most of them get bad reviews really! A lot of people compare them to the older paint strippers that had stronger chemicals in them. PP is great for paint stripping a big surface area, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for all paint stripping. And some of the strippers that did badly in the test actually do a great job for other things. Im planning a video about it ☺️
@@departmentofreinvention I'm going to be trying the Home strip today. I'm only stripping lacquer from an oak table so hopefully it will work.
Great video with great info. Thank you for doing all that research for all of our benefit. ❤️ much appreciated. 👏🏻👍🏻
That’s so sweet of you to say! Thank you ❤️
What a beautiful result!
Thank you 💚
Very helpful
Thank you! super helpful. I'm looking to strip the paint off a garden play house for my nephew. Do you on average how many of the paint predator 1L bottles I'd approximately need to buy to do the job? thank you. it is about 5ft x 5ft.
The guidance says 1 litre per square metre for the PP, but I would try scraping it first to see if that loosens the paint.
@@departmentofreinvention Thank you. most helpful. I really appreciate it. I'm just going to buy one litre initially and see how we get on. I've gone by your recommention as per the video so I'm sure it will be a success. Will report back 🤗
Great video and I drew the same conclusion(s) ...
Very gorgeous
💚 thank you!
Looks beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely stunning, I do not have the patience for this level of detailed paint stripping at all. Great idea with the battered edges so you didn't waste the lovely grain!
Aww thanks love! I become hyper focused when it comes to the paint stripping detail!
This looks LOVELY!! Great job rescuing and refinishing it 😍👏🤩
Thank you! Definitely one of the shabbier projects I’ve worked on!
Gorgeous!
Thank you so much!
This is really helpful - thanks for such a great summary of VOCs and the harms as well. Appreciated!
Glad it was helpful! ☺️
What a well researched video- very helpful
Thank you, I’m glad it was helpful!
Predator was the best?
In this test, yes the Fast action Paint Predator was the best.
Thank you for sharing your insights, it was real interesting to see the various results 😊👍 I’ve used Paint Panther and Eco Solutions for ages, but I think I might just give Paint Predator a go!!
Amazing, I’m so glad it was useful! Some paint strippers that didn’t perform as well can be really good for things like detail work, but the Predator was a real surprise!
I have a red Chinese book slide and I cannot get the paint off to repair or clean any advice. I have tried several products
I’m not familiar with a Chinese book slide, what sort of thing is it?
Thank you for doing all of the hard work for me. It's not only saved me time but also reduced the potential disappointment. I recognise all of the strippers you listed and have read the reviews on them. However, there is nothing more informative than actually seeing the process and the results in real time. I've used a heat gun for some of my (dismantled) doors but it's not really an option in an enclosed space when kids are around. So, thank you again.👏👏👏👏
You’re welcome! That was my goal, to make a useful reference video because the market is so flooded and a lot of the stuff isn’t great. So glad it was helpful!
