FANTASTIC SAILING - Tobermory to Gigha
We departed Tobermory with high hopes, hoisting the sails as the wind and tides aligned perfectly for our journey.
What followed was an exhilarating sail all the way to Gigha, with the wind reaching up to 27 knots, propelling us swiftly down the Sound of Jura.
The thrill of the journey was briefly interrupted by a finicky headsail furler, but we tackled that issue upon arriving at Ardminish Bay in Gigha. The stunning scenery and the adrenaline rush made it all worthwhile.
We hope you enjoy watching this video as much as we enjoyed the adventure.😁😁

SAILING with dolphins - Tarbert to Tobermory.
Просмотров 338Месяц назад
We left the dock at the Isle of Harris marina at the break of dawn, the first light of morning casting a soft glow over the tranquil waters. As our vessel set course for Tobermory, the initial motoring soon gave way to motorsailing and, finally, to pure sailing under clear, sunlit skies. As we approached Neist Point, the sea came alive with a breathtaking spectacle. Pods of dolphins danced arou...

OVERNIGHT SAILING - Tobermory to Tarbert
Просмотров 3372 месяца назад
At long last, we had a favorable wind forecast and eagerly set off north. The wind held steady throughout the night, allowing us to sail smoothly under the stars. By around 0200hrs, the wind began to wane, and we transitioned to motoring for the final stretch, just as we had anticipated. The passage was fantastic, filled with exhilarating moments of sailing and the beauty of the open sea. As we...
SAILING - Loch Tarbert to Stornoway.

We set off from The Isle of Harris Marina heading north. The intention was to go directly to the Shetland Islands. After a long day of battling against the changing conditions we eventually ran out of wind. Again 😮 The decision was made to go to Stornoway rather than motor North. We headed in and had a great stay at Stornoway Marina. *Thank You to all those who support us in your different ways...
The day we DID NOT sail to Rum!

It all started well but then.... Sailing can be the ultimate test of patience. We’d been stuck in a windless purgatory for what felt like an eternity. The forecast had teased us with promises of perfect sailing weather to sail to Rum or Canna. But, alas, Mother Nature had other ideas and the wind just stopped blowing. Faced with the choice between drifting aimlessly and accepting defeat, we cho...
Loch Spelve to Tobermory - still no wind and a diesel leak!

On another windless day, we begin a quiet journey to Tobermory, the hum of our engine the only sound breaking the silence... well, there was some colourful language when Jon discovered a diesel leak.... Upon arriving in the picturesque harbor of Tobermory, we picked up a vacant mooring buoy. Now we were safely tied up, I turned my attention to the engine and tackled the pesky diesel leak. Armed...

Around the end and headed north...still no wind. it was a long motor all the way to the anchorage at Drumyeon Bay, Gigha. SAILING Millport to Campbeltown - bad hair day!
Просмотров 3934 месяца назад
Sailing from Millport, Isle of Cumbrae to Campbeltown on the Kintyre Peninsula was supposed to be a fairly straightforward passage..... It turned into almost every type of sailing there is, from drifting slowly along in almost zero wind to blasting downwind with reefed sails in 28 knots and then motoring in uncomfortable swells as the wind dropped again. Phew! A 'bad hair day' at sea 🤣😮 It was ...

Hi, What is the setting for the speed sink (between the two stop screws) so that the small spring attached to the arm regulation does not jump out? Thank you
Hi @hurlou8909. I'm sorry to say I don't know the answer to your question 😟 The VP workshop manual (available online) will probably have the answer. I'm not a mechanic so I just put everything back as it was 🤷 If you find the answer could you post it here for others as it will be a great help 😁👍
Great to see that you had excellent sailing weather 😬 Dramatic scenery in places and a glimpse of basking seals . Lots of cups of tea and hot tasty food. Everything for a perfect passage. Lovely to watch . 👍
Hello @annturner1639. It was a fantastic passage. It's so good when everything falls together so well. Brilliant fun!! 😁😁⛵
You two make your own sunshine. Nice downwind run. I noticed Tobermory had a distillery, but I dont need to order Whiskey online.
Whisky. Whichever, I cant remember the difference in spellings.
Hello @olivei2484 Thanks for your lovely comment. We try to keep things upbeat. I think everywhere in Scotland has a distillery but neither of us drink whisky 🤣🤣
Hi Jon and allyson. Wonderful video - given me the appetite to go ‘discover’ the Faroes for myself. Such incredible scenery. Cheers Alan
Hello Alan. Thanks for your kind comment. The Faroe Islands are incredible and well worth visiting. There is an app called Rak which is essential for the tides 👍👍
Beauty day! I liked the dolphins too. Nice you had a few other vessels out there with you, did not seem so empty.
Hello @olivei2484 Glad you liked the dolphins. They are always a treat to see. Sometimes it can seem like you are the only boat out there ⛵
What a fantastict video .. the dolphins were spectacular ! Dramatic scenery too . Good to see the weather was kind to you with wind and sunshine.. Lovely .😎
Hello @annturner1639 Thank you for your lovely comment. Dolphins are a treat we never tire of seeing. It is impossible to look in any direction and not be impressed with the beauty of Scotland ❤️
Hope the weather your dressed for does not sneak up on you 😂😂
Hi @Yourdadselllsavon It did at the Isles of Scilly 🤣
@@sailingnovavita Tarbert too the Scilly Isles that’s some passage, I’ve been too both places.I stopped off at the Scilly Isles on passage from Dunmore East before heading onto Ushant 🇫🇷 2.5 days from Southern Ireland 🇮🇪
Hi @Yourdadselllsavon We went back to Largs first in a few hops. Then to Ireland (Dun Laoghaire), Wales (Dale/Neyland) and from there to the Isles of Scilly. From Scilly we sailed direct to the Azores, then Porto Santo (Madeira) and we are currently in the Canary Islands. Soon heading further....😁 Did you stop at Ushant? We did not have the weather when we passed it in 2019.
@@sailingnovavita lovely place with fabulous gardens ❤️
@@sailingnovavita yes we did , also fabulous although policeman came looking us in the morning as some flags were apparently missing from the castle 🏰 😂
Beautiful scenery ,happy faces. Both of you are well wrapped up against the cold in all the right clothes. I expect you don't need such thick outfits where you are now ;-)
Hello @annturner1639 It is a beautiful coastline. Really dramatic. The videos do not do it justice. our outfits now consist of shorts and t-shirt, much different to Scotland 😁😁☀️☀️
One good tern deserves another. 😁
Hi @olivei2484 Haha, good one! 😁😁
Thank you for uploading this video, I'm currently trying to restore a seized Perkins M30, similar your MD2030, and about to take off the pump, really helpful.. Really nice boat also..
Hi @ChaseCapital2826 Thank you for your kind comment. Hope the restoration is successful 👍
Hello, sorry for my english...I'm french. The video is very good
Hello @FernandBessa Thank you for your comment. I am glad that you enjoyed the video and I hope it helped you 😁
Thanks so much for making this video. A huge help!
hello @georgecleary2969 Thanks for your very positive comment. I'm so glad it helped. it makes the filming and editing all worthwhile 😁
Looks like you had a great sail hope the sun comes out 😊
Hello @sailinggemini and thank you for your comment. It was a really good sail and we love going to the Outer Hebrides. We eventually got some sun too....we have sailed to the Azores ⛵😁😁👍
@@sailingnovavita Wow the Azores I can’t wait to see that 😊
I am in the process of editing. It's going to be 2 fairly long videos 😁
Great shots of Skua. And theres puffins!
Hi @olivei2484 Thanks for your comment. We were lucky to be so close to the skua. Puffins are always a joy to see too 😁😁
@@sailingnovavita It was a bird I didn't recognize, so that was really cool. Liked Harris harbor too.
I loved watching the video for Coffin Road we are heading up there this September(2024)and hope to follow the same route, the video was a great help it gave me an idea of what to expect. thank you. 😊
Hello @DeniseW-dx4bu Thank you for your kind comment. It is a fantastic walk with a lot of history behind it and the views are spectacular. We found out about the walk from Peter May's book (link in description) which is excellent. It is part of the Lewis Trilogy. You can also see the famous Chess men at Lewes Castle, Stornoway 👍👍😁 Wishing you fair weather for your trip.
Lots of wildlife including Puffins 😁 and I thought the bird was going to land on you 😄 super filming. Another nice Marina. I bet you enjoyed a good sleep when you arrived.😴 xx
Hi @annturner1639 Thanks for commenting. There is a huge amount of wildlife in Scotland and the islands. Well worth the journey to get there. It was great to see the skua up close. We definitely had a good rest when we arrived 👍👍😁
The footage of that Skua was excellent
Hello @user-gy2zf1yl2q Thank you for your kind comment. We were so lucky to be able to capture it on film. It was an amazing experience 😁👍👍
Well at least you tried 😄weather not in your favour.😡 Marina looked good. Batteries seemed to be a problem... I hope someome can help with the GoPro battery problems. 🤞Glad you have found the beep button 🤣🤣 xxxx
Hello @annturner1639 Thanks for your comment. The weather can be a pain sometimes but that's sailing for you. The marina is fantastic at Stornoway, really well sheltered and right in the town. We seem to have sorted the "beeeep" batteries now 🤣🤣🤣
Can't believe that we are talking about the same year! Loads of wind during our trip to the Hebrides, and even more since we have got back. You were lucky with the sun though - can't have it all :) And why not head on to Muck, rather than head back - great wee island - I'd suggest a stop there in your travels.
Hi @tarbertsailing thanks for your comment. It seemed a bit all or nothing wind-wise for a while 🤣 Don't know why we never thought of going in to Muck as it is somewhere we wanted to visit. That will have to wait a while as we are currently in Ponta Delgada, Azores 😁👍
Hi Guys we loved Canna it was one of our favorite places. We have been the opposite of you stuck in nearly every marina in the south because of the westerly winds and so expensive compared to Scotland hope you get some wind soon 😊⛵️
Hi @sailinggemini Thanks for your comment. The summer has been really bad in the UK. The south coast is very expensive these days. hope you get some favourable wind soon. We finally got some wind....and have sailed to Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores 👍👍😁😁
Really nice castle/ big house at Rum. Good luck with the midges.
Hi @richardchitty264 We have been to the anchorage at Rum twice to shelter from bad weather and never made it ashore!! 🤣
Bit rolly. Looks like a nice anchorage though.
Hi @olivei2484 Thank you for your comment. it certainly can be a bit rolly in there!
Weather looked fabulous and the colours brilliant . Shame about the lack of wind. Maybe tomorrow you will get to Rum 🤞🌬🌬
hi @annturner1639 The weather was fab. Shame we ran out of wind! 😁
The mechanisms you saw are automatic sluice gates. When the aqueduct is over full, water flows down the pipe in the foreground and fills the bucket, which then pulls the chain down over the pulley wheel and lifts the counterweight and the lever opening the sluice gate. Small holes in the bucket allow the water to drain slowly out, so when the inflow stops the counterweight eventually pulls the sluice gate lever down and lifts the empty bucket. I believe some of the other small buildings were bothys used by those who built the Cut. Thank you for posting the video. We stay in the area and have done all our lives. Cheers.
Hi @JohnSullivansChannel thank you for your informative comment. It has answered our questions. It is really beautiful there. A wonderful place to live.
Very calm today ... no wind 😔 but lots of wildlife .. Glad you fixed the diesel leak . Tobermory look nice with the coloured houses. Wot no tea 🤣
Hi @annturner1639 we love seeing the wildlife. The diesel was a relatively easy fix thank goodness. Tobermory is a really pretty town. I'm sure there must have been tea-drinking going on.....
Short grey trip this time. Slightly busier mooring field.
Hi @olivei2484 Thanks for your comment. Yes, just a short trip. Tobermory is lovely.
Another lovely video. Are you guys aware of Antares Charts? If not do a Google. Bob Bradfield has re-surveyed many of the remote Scottish West Coast anchorages and produced much more accurate local digital charts. I can highly recommend them. Lots of the Admiralty charts are based on dubious lead line surveys from a bygone era!
We where gutted we couldn't go to Loch Spelve last year we really wanted to try the mussels, Hope the wind picks up you our lovely people
Hello @sailinggemini Thanks for commenting. Loch Spelve is a really beautiful place. We have not tried the mussels as Allyson is allergic to shellfish 🤢 The wind. Well, it has certainly been a strange season so far as the wind is concerned. Hopefully we'll see it start to settle soon 👍🤞
Looks lovely.. Sea is really swirly with the whirpool..🫣 Yummy fresh mussels food of the gods ! cooked with white wine garlic and cream. 😚
Hi @annturner1639 Thanks for your comment. The sea is definitely swirly 🤣 Mussels in white wine and garlic - wonderful 😋👩🍳😁
Nice quite anchorage! Yum, fresh muscles!
Hi @olivei2484 Thanks for commenting. The anchorage is fantastic and the availability of fresh mussels is great 👍😁
A bientôt, Fabien.
Salut Fabien.

@@sailingnovavita That was one of the nicest rants ever. Wish you caught the video of mooring to pontoon, congrats on steerage, well done.
I did a similar (solo) trip from Kip Marina to Troon back in October and it was a nightmare. Huge gusts coming from the south, high seas, boat struggled getting through the Hunterston Gap , darkness fell, Gib sheet stuck under whisker pole on deck. 7 hrs. never again. Not impressed with staff at Troon Marina (Kip, much better).
Hi Sabhail ar Alba. Thanks for your comment. Sounds like you had a bit of a nightmare day. Some days everything seems to go wrong. Had a few days like that ourselves 🤣 We've never been to Kip marina but it looks very nice. Love the dolphin video 👍😁
just wanted to say thank you for posting this I am in the middle of replacing all of the gaskets on the front of the engine and some of the steps are a bit obscure... your video does a good job of showing a lot of the little pit falls.

Hi. Thanks for your lovely comment. Allyson really enjoys sailing in more challenging conditions 😁😁⛵
Good job!
Hi Andy. Thank you for your comment. It was a big job for a small 'o' ring and we were pleased to have succeeded 👍👍
Good job you two. The amount of Hylomar looked right to me. I have a flexible driver for hose clips. I can highly recommend getting one. Its one of the most used tools onboard Adagio as it can get in at difficult to get to angles. Putting the end of the header tank hose in a container of hot water would have made it easier to fit, but I expect you know that!
Hi Andy. Thanks for your positive comment I will look into the flexible driver for hose clips - sounds like a winner 😁🪛👍Yes, I should definitely have used hot water with the hose! Sometimes we forget the obvious 🤣🤣
