Theres a reason why most nice guys stop being nice. All the asshole and jerks of the world weren't born that way, hell some of them were raised that way but try to listen to their hearts rather then their dicks. But once they've been broken more times that they can count, they stop being nice not because they want to get laid but because they are done being heartbroken. Sal's speech hits on it perfectly: "We're all responsible for this cycle" That ownership that is taken is a little different; the very fact he's willing to acknowledge that the fact he would break hearts, is because a woman broke his. That ultimately he couldn't care less about the fact that this happens, because he knows no matter how nuanced the truth is, that the 'fairer' sex will say: "ALL men are pigs", so why make any excuses for the way he conducts himself, he owes no one an explanation, but if they had one, they'd have to be prepared for the idea that it wouldn't be ALL men (Hurt people, HURT people). This is completely juxtaposed by the 11th Man Speech later, where women are gushed over as the finest of all of God's creations, whilst simultaneously stating that the way to win a woman is to not be too confrontational, to acknowledge her presence but live your own life. It's a simple enough sentiment, but unfortunately both Sal's world, and the 11th man world exists simultaneously. That stranger you are going to get to know, is fully capable of destroying you, just as they are capable of cherishing you. It isn't entirely possible to know which is which, as there's always that random element of not knowing what the other person is thinking: After all, there is a reason why this whole film starts with Tom's break-up - which he certainly didn't see coming, as he was going to propose. The sad truth is people don't want to accept that Sal's world view is the other half of the 11th man speech. That sometimes you very well COULD have done everything right, but you'll get your heart broken anyway. Some of them will dust themselves off, some might even go out and maybe next time they get it right, and good for them. Some of them will dust themselves off, some will decide that they won't get hurt again, but may hurt others in the process. Others won't engage with it at all, deciding that in order to not get hurt again, it's just easier not to play (Which is half eluded to in the 11th man speech itself, except without the necessary history to conclude that the reasoning for not playing is different, it isn't "the 'right' woman will turn up eventually" it is an "I don't need them at all"). However; neither the film makers nor society wants you to accept Sal's answer as 'justifiable'. He exists in this movie to act as a foil for 'the good guy' that basically discusses the notion of, "you'll find the right one eventually just by being yourself" despite the fact Sal's argument never refutes this. Rather Sal's whole entire argument is that many women (because he's reluctant to say 'All Women' - because he knows it isn't true in absolutes) are laughably hypocritical to criticize men for how they conduct themselves around women (Lack of commitment, looking just for a cheap lay), when the subtext to this conversation is two-fold, in that not only are women still a part of that conversation, needing to participate to be the cheap lay; some knowingly, some naively. But that there is an argument to me made that at least some of those men that are conducting themselves in this way, are doing so because of at least a woman failing to treat that man correctly - which they feel so vehemently against when its on the subject of 'How men treat women'. But they don't have enough of the introspection to be able to determine that some of their monsters are entirely of their own making. The '11th Man Speech' is the 'Optimist' The 'Nice Guys' Speech is the 'Pessimist'
