Rediscovering Old AS Level Art - Sketchbook Tour
I have been having a big clear out of my parent's loft and flicking through old artwork. In this video, I tour through my old sketchbooks and loose artwork created in my first year of sixth form, or AS Level Art. I hope you enjoy my trip down creative memory lane!

In this video I have a look back at artwork from my early childhood. Paintings and drawings I have brought down from the loft and sorted through to go into memory boxes or in the bin. The nostalgia of kids' paints and the things I used to love painting was fun to experience. Aw thanks :)
I love your video! It's great to see how you continued your painting after the workshop. Putting your painting on display is the perfect way to absorb it completely and pick up on any little changes you may want to make. Often we can look at a painting for several weeks (or months) before realising exactly what it is about it that's troubling us and more importantly how to fix it. Another tip would be to use the same reference material for a new painting; take everything you've learned from doing it once, add in some new ideas and see where it takes you. Sarah x
Aw thank you :) Thank you so much for the tips and for the workshop, I really enjoyed it! x
Pretty!
Thank you :)

Still better than modern arts
Thank you ☺️

I love that you see this 😊
I’m loving this low key and chill RUclips style! You look happy and relaxed 😊
@@HelenAveryArtChannel thank you! I had a good time painting this one 👌🏻
Smart to use a waterproof tablecloth as an all purpose surface! Nice not to have to fiddle with a bunch of different bits. Great video!
@@HelenAveryArtChannel yer it’s been a great buy 😊 thank you very much!
soulless
How 😭
@@99onone50 thanks for your feedback, although it feels a little more like a harsh comment than a critique. I still feel like I’m a beginner artist figuring out my style and technique and I’m just playing and experimenting and sharing my journey. Hopefully I will get to the point where my art doesn’t feel ‘soulless’ one day soon 😊
@@StephWelchArt whats there to critique? you either "got it" or you don't.
@@99onone50I disagree I think some people have talent sure. But I also think art can be learned and I’m still in the early stages of learning. I also think the “art is subjective” statement is true. Other people seem to like this and you don’t, that’s fine, I’m sure there are pieces you like that others wouldn’t. Not sure they would feel the need to tell the artist they don’t like it though. Especially one who’s learning, but thanks for the engagement all the same 😊
@@StephWelchArt it's not about talent. as you said, anyone can learn. no, what this piece lacks is "soul". immeasurable, and unquantifiable. it is the tiny piece of the divine that inspires the viewer to greatness, this piece lacks it.
What is peachtober? I’m taking part in Inktober but have never heard of this. Absolutely beautiful piece! Super eye catching❤
It's similar but run by @furrylittlepeach, who has a RUclips channel and has been creating her own prompt list for several years. Worth checking her out. She's got some great videos :) Also, thank you very much ❤

Hey Steph, you are right, there were some moments where it really looked good :-). I'm wondring why your paper doesn't buckle. There is so much paint on it. What did you use? Liked the experiment 🙂
Hey :) Yer, I'm a bit gutted I didn't stop earlier. But I'm learning! It's card, they're a6 recycled postcards from Eco Craft. Thank you so much for watching :)
I think your landscape is great!
Thank you so much :)
Use blue painter's tape from the hardware store
Thank you. I have not yet come across this blue painter's tape; I wonder if it's an American thing. I think the yellow stuff I have is painter's tape. It works well when the paper is gessoed or heated up, but it's not always perfect. I will continue to keep an eye out for the blue stuff when I next visit B&Q or Homebase or something. Thanks!
A tip to get the tape off without tearing is to use a hair drier, it softens the adhesive on the tape.
Thank you. I have tried this a few times since I created this piece, and it did help!
Absolutely stunning collection! The use of color and texture in your abstract acrylics is so inspiring. I love how each piece has its own unique vibe. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work!
Aww thank you for your lovely comment. I'm glad you enjoyed watching :)
Wow, the abstract textured landscape is amazing! 🎨🌟 I love how you’ve used textures and colors to create such a dynamic piece. The process you shared was really insightful and inspiring. Thanks for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at your creative journey!
Thank you so much :)
I am also a paint quantity undermixer, you’re not alone. I can’t bear the waste but it has come back to haunt me more than once. I loved hearing about your process and colour choices. It turned out pretty! 😊
Aw I'm not alone :) thank you!
this was so nice to follow.
thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
These turned out lovely! They look so fresh and juicy
Thanks :) I was pretty pleased with the result.
I love how thickly acrylic lays down, I haven’t used it in decades but I’m tempted to start making with it again. I like how you edited this video, as well
I quickly found I really liked acrylic and have continued using it for most things. I need to go back to trying other stuff out, I think, but it's a fun medium to work with. Thank you. Thanks for watching!
I too am a newbie at using oil pastels and, like BlackBean CMS said, these Faber Castell oil pastels are so frustrating to work with and they will make a new user feel like they are doing something wrong. Now, this is a messy medium, so if you don't like having pastel on your hands, you will never like this because a higher quality pastel is even more smudgy. Just picking up an oil pastel will cause messy hands. But I really started to like the medium better when I tried the Van Gogh Oil Pastel by Royal Talens. They are considered student grade, but they include both the pigment and lightfast information on each pastel, and the colors are amazing. They adhere to the paper well and blend beautifully. They are still a more firm pastel which are best for underlayers, but you could easily create a full piece with them without using a softer pastel like the professional grade Caran D'Ache Neopastel (not Neocolor) or a Sennelier. I also enjoyed using the Sakura Cray Pas Expressionist line, which is also produced by Royal Talens, and looks almost identical to the Van Gogh. However, they are slightly firmer, have no pigment or lightfast information, but still blend well and adhere to the paper. The Van Gogh are fairly expensive in the US when purchased open stock; one retailer currently sells them for almost $3 each which is more expensive than the professional grade Neopastels. But I bought the full 60 set on Amazon which made them about $0.74 each and was a much better deal. If you are in Europe, I imagine that they are much more affordable. If you decide to try them, will you please make a video comparing them with the Faber Castell? I'd love to hear your thoughts. I was sooooo disappointed since Faber Castell makes some of my most favorite products, like the Goldfaber and Polychromos pencils. They really dropped the ball with their oil pastel line and almost made me give up trying the medium. But the Van Gogh oil pastels restored my faith; they are so pleasant to work with. Also, the Caran D'ache Neocolor II, which are the water-soluble wax pastels/ crayons, are stellar when used dry or wet. If I could only afford one type of pastel, I would buy them, but they are very different from oil pastel. If you hate getting your hands dirty, you will love them. They definitely perform more in line with how a watercolor and gouache painter expects of a high quality crayon, but they do not apply as soft and thick as an oil pastel. I have more control with them, and I enjoy using them as a top layer over watercolor or gouache. Sorry this comment is so long, but I had to share my thoughts and hope they end up being helpful. I am loving your content and look forward to watching you experiment with different mediums as you continue to discover and expand what you enjoy working with!
Wow! Your comment packs so much amazing info. Thank you so much. I loved the outcome I got with a few of my oil pastel pieces, but I have not used them for a while. I would love to start including them in some mixed-media abstract pieces soon. I think I was initially put off by the mess, lol, but I reckon I could deal with it. I did end up getting some of the neocolor II's, which I also liked using. If I get more oil pastels, I will make a video comparing them. But for now, I need to use what I have. If only there was an endless art supplies budget 😂. Your thoughts have been helpful, and I really appreciate you watching my video and taking the time to write such a helpful comment. I hope you enjoy the videos I have coming up :)
@@StephWelchArt Thank you so much and I thoroughly enjoy your content. After I left this comment, I scrolled through your posts and noticed that you did get the Neocolor II so I'm looking forward to watching you use them and enjoy them! And that is so smart and fiscally responsible to focus on using what you have! We can truly make good art with any material because it's about the artist and not the medium and you are doing an excellent job with working with your materials. I look forward to continuing to enjoy your art and everything that you share. Keep up the excellent work!
@@CeruleanCzarina Thank you so much! :)
I love both my Goldfaber and my Polychromos pencils. I carry a small section of Goldfabers in my purse at all times because they are lightweight. In lead hardness, the Goldfaber sit perfectly between a Polychromos and a Prismacolor, so they are an excellent choice if you can only buy one set. And while they have a small color range of 48 pencils versus 120 Polychromos, Faber Castell did a good job of selecting the best variety of colors from each color family, and they layer immaculately to create custom hues. I hope that you fall in love with them.
Ah, that's good to know. I do enjoy using these Goldfabers, although I have since invested in a set of Castle Arts pencils to get that wider range of colours. they are not the same quality, but my budget doesn't stretch to getting a set of Polychromos just yet! I still have and will use the Goldfabers when possible. Thanks for watching :)
@@StephWelchArt Are the Castle Arts pencils even better than or comparable to the Goldfabers? I haven't tried those yet, but I'm definitely interested if you find that you like them.
To be honest I haven't used them for a long time as I have been exploring other mediums, so I couldn't really say if they are much better than the Goldfabers.
Please create an art piece using each medium showing the flexibility
I have just released a new video today using some of these art supplies, I hope that shows some of how they can be used, although I'm still learning so not sure if I'm using them in the right way. Let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see and I will see what I can do :)
I liked all of them, including the one you weren’t as pleased with! I love iterating on a subject and watching how others approach it so thanks for the video 😊
Aw thank you, I have a tendency to be very critical of my own work. Even work I love I end up hating lol. Thanks for watching!
From what I've personally seen and experience, a lot of acrylic brushes, especially the synthetic fiber ones, can also be used for watercolors without any issues, some pigments might just be harder to wash off, is all. As for the whole thing about leaving tube watercolors to dry out in palettes, the general advice is to do a sort of test run, leaving some small drops to dry out and then compare how they reactivate versus fresh out of the tube, since some might lose a little vibrancy or flake, the likes. I have no knowledge of the brand you're using here though, so that's as much as I can say. Also, that was a really pretty tree! Wishing lots of fun with your new supplies!
Thank you sp much! Great tips and advice I will keep in mind. Thank you for watching!
Great video, I love your sketches. "Got no bum" made me laugh my head off. Unfortunately I can relate IRL! hahaha
Thank you :) hahaha aw man, I got no boobs, we can't have it all lol 😂
I love the addition of yellow at the end! Beautiful color combination!

Thank you :)
Those are beautiful colors! Pretty pieces.

Try heating the tape with a heat gun before peeling and peeling at a 45 degree angle. Helps the tape come off with out damaging the paper

Did you try to use them as “watercolor markers”? I’m curious if they maybe dissolve in a beautiful way☀️
