Spiritual Band-aids, Real Change
In this episode, I talk with Dr. David Pooler about spiritual bandaids-psychologists often call this “spiritual bypassing.”
It’s an honest conversation that will help you understand the impact of spiritual bypassing on yourself, your friends, and your church.
We also provide practical steps for fostering a more authentic and integrated spirituality.
The most important step is to know how to recognize these spiritual bandaids. That’s how we move towards a more honest and healthy spirituality. True spiritual growth requires us to be real with ourselves and with God about our spiritual journey.
We also encourage you to discuss it with the Uncommon Pursuit community at

thank you for lesson about Holy Spirit.

This was so excellent!!! I've loved Carmen's class on Exodus in Bible Project. Thank you with all my heart! Y'all are wonderful!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Dr. Imes is an amazing teacher!
I’ve always thought apologetics was primarily the defense of the faith against false teachings within the church as well as cults that proclaim Christianity or oppose it.
Hi @chrislopez2125, I think that's a great definition of apologetics. But in this video, I wanted to explain what 1 Peter means in its original context. I think it helps us refocus on the importance of living godly lives together as a Christian community. Without that witness, the intellectual defense of our faith will seem hollow.
SO GLAD I FOUND YOU & this ministry! I hv been so angry about Ravi & RZIM for years. Your experience & battle & message of hope & forgiveness has been very healing. Thank you! May God continue to bless you & your family

Thank you Carson, such a great video, It did help me in so many ways.
I'm so encouraged to hear this!
In my opinion, I believe that serving others has as great a power as the gospel of the forgiveness of sins. Thank you for your kind words.
It took 2000 years for God to tell someone to set Christians straight regarding the old testament?
I don't understand? Even within the Bible, part of the conflict and drama is that many people don't understand what God is saying. For instance, this is part of the ongoing dispute Jesus has with the religious leaders of his day. Nor do I think Dr. Averbeck is the first to suggest that the OT can be summed up in the requirement to love God and our neighbors.
Authentic…. Love it
So awesome Carson
Thank you David!
So authentic, generous, and useful Carson. Thank you.
Thank you @allmystoriesvideos! I appreciate your encouragement
You seem nice. Unfortunately, the predominant impression that Christians make on others today is that they are judgmental, hateful, hypocritical people who are working to overthrow democracy. If you want to rehabilitate that image, then I wish you the best of luck. I wish I saw more Christians who I could honestly consider good, kind, or upstanding members of my community. Of late, they seem to be all the worst people. And good luck with your apologetics. Fundamentally, you have to tell people that they deserve to be tortured unless they think and act like you do. That's a hard message to sell. In my experience, the only people who do convert are desperate, unhappy people who already hold a poor opinions of themselves. Because of their downtrodden feelings, the self-degradation that Christianity teaches is an easy pill for them to swallow, epecially in light of its promises that things will work out better in the end. ("You're worthless, depraved by your very nature, never good enough, and you can't handle life on your own without god...") I have been listening to apologists for over 10 years. Apologetics appears to be intended for believers, not for converting nonbelievers. To nonbelievers, apologetics is very off-putting because nonbelievers are constantly misrepresented and maligned. To believers, it's a way to patch up any doubts they might experience, with assurances that smart people have considered these problems and found strong solutions, and anyone who disagrees must surely be lying or have bad personal character. On closer inspection, mainstream apologetics is little more than a bundle of common fallacies disguised with clever semantics, uplifting music, and hip young messengers with fancy sneakers, tattoos, and acoustic guitars. Arguments from ignorance, appeals to consequence, circular reasoning, ad hoc reasoning, and post hoc rationalization are among the most common fallacies that I see. As it happens, these are also exactly the tools that MLM reps and con men use. It's not a good look for Christianity.
Thanks for sharing this. So true that God uses imperfect people for his kingdom.
Amen! Thanks Dave!
@@UncommonPursuit you're welcome
" If we walk in the light as he is in the light . . ." This verse came to mind as I listened to your thoughts. I suppose this passage has always been an encouragement toward confession and transparency, but you just put a "real world" example out there from your own life. The passage goes on to tell us we experience cleansing from sin and fellowship--in other words, we connect with others in valuable, supportive ways when we have the courage to be real Christians instead of the photoshop kind. Thanks Carson.
Yes, sometimes I've been taught that I need to be strong to have friends. But over time, I learned that vulnerability (that appropriately matches the level of trust in the relationship) is essential to building deep relationships.
How can the dangers of this happening in church run biblical counseling programs be warned about without making all church counseling suspect? The power dynamic is extreme between someone in a spiritual position learning of others vulnerability, weaknesses, sin and abuse vs that person coming for "supposed help". It can be a recipe for further abuse. And there is little that can be done to combat it because if the person seeking help speaks out about hurt, abuse, power abuse etc. it can easily be turned on the counselee - they aren't trusting God, they are submissive to the counseling and moving forward anything shared can be taken to leadership and used as a weapon against the person. The counselor carries no accountability. The counselee can be setting themselves up for greater abuse, silencing, manipulation. Ultimately in my experience, forcing the person seeking help from the church to have to leave the church. Speaking of vulnerabilities with the wrong person will heap abuse ontop of abuse.
It's a huge challenge. Licensed therapists offer more protections than a church counselor. They are required to complete certain educational milestones, take exams, and have supervised clinical hours. They're regulated by state boards who can discipline therapists who abuse their power. And they have strict ethical codes that govern their interactions with clients. I would like to see churches consider how they can meet or exceed these ethical standards.
@UncommonPursuit In theory I agree and want to agree with the idea of biblical counseling in churches. In practice I have experienced great hurt and witnessed others go through great hurt by biblical counseling done wrong. I warn against ACBC counseling. I have also experienced helpful "counsel' from a different church that was biblical. But after coming face to face with the abuse of power that can happen in biblical counseling, I am extremely wary and untrusting.
@@shannonsundby5725 I understand and I have similar concerns. I worked at RZIM where Judy Dabler was a consultant. That's not to say every counselor is bad, but there is a need to earn trust.
@UncommonPursuit It is so sad that it takes so long and a trail of hurt people before those who shouldn't be counseling are stopped and exposed, especially in a church. I was in support of biblical counseling and even went through 2 1/2 years of training until my own experience opened my eyes to the dangers and damage that can be done. Maybe it goes along with church growth initiatives and churches turning into businesses or religious social clubs.
@@shannonsundby5725 Yes, I think the financial incentives are a huge part of it. It's heartbreaking - I sit in grief with you at the losses you've experienced.
Sorry about your car... 😅😅😅😅 forgive them Carson. I love the way you connect this experience to how difficult we have come to appreciate and obeying Jesus. Unlike the dealer shop Jesus never disappoint or rejects our appointment with him. Jesus alway saves
I'm grateful that Jesus is always there for us - unlike this dealership!
No it will not,but when you become a Christian you will not want to use foul language at that moment. The only thing that will send you to hell is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
I think the standard is to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). And of course, verse 29, "No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear" (CSB).
Thank you!!! ✝️🙏
I'm so glad this was helpful to you!
Amen, Brother Carson! How can we reach those that are dissimilar to us for God's Kingdom? It is through Prayer and trusting that God and the Holy Spirit will do the rest. No circumstance or anyones biases will ever be perfect. My Wife was able to witness to some school girls the other day through Christian Rap playing in her car. Through Jesus there are minimal limits and biases.❤🙏💪🏁
I appreciate your encouragement! I agree, a life of prayer and trusting God is the foundation. If our lives do not indicate that we love God and love others, then our testimony will be compromised.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I like the idea of using my faith to improve politics. I agree that our faith needs to inform how we vote. I will ponder that my politics can be used to love my neighbor. I would add one thing. We need to pray for candidates we agree with and those we don't agree with to be saved and surrounded by godly influences.
Hey @davetheprayerguy, I really like your encouragement to pray for candidates we agree with and those we don't. These habits of prayer will help us love their supporters, too.
As for myself I don't worry about it ☺️ because I know that God is in control 🙏🏻 and everything must come to pass 🙏🏻
Trusting in God’s control gives us peace for what we can't control
Thank you so much for sharing - as a believer, I sometimes just want to ignore the whole situation. Giving great instruction on how we can be Christlike in this political turmoil is helpful. I will share your three thoughts as I talk with others. What a great opportunity we have to change the climate around us!
Thanks Ruthie! This intense season is challenging, but it does give us a unique opportunity to be distinctive by approaching people with a desire to show them the love of God.
It's amazing that you use the term Yankee! I had a guy I met in nursing school and he was always saying you Yankees this you Yankees that and I never thought much about it, until it dawned on me that he was carrying hatred from the past, and when I questioned him about it he said that I was absolutely correct that they hated the north because of the fight over slavery.... I will also as of note say that when the verdicts came down against Donald Trump, you noticed that there was no burning down of buildings or looting, the word says you will know them by their fruits
Yes, I was surprised to find that in my heart. It's interesting how deep the roots of hatred go. Thank God for his grace and how he changes us to love others!
I agree! God does want to bless us. Let's pray for his blessings.
This was very generous and helpful. Thank you. I'm signing up for the series.

So glad you enjoyed it and subscribed!
This was a good conversation but sadly will never reach or become reality to so many of us who need it. When churches become about numbers and image management, run as a business organization, individual people no longer matter. People are just a commodity to be used for service and revenue. Losing my church community and the reality of being worthless to the church I had been a part of for almost 3 decades was even more difficult and compounded the issue I asked for help with. It would have been better to remain silent...except that I now know the truth. I appreciated it said that it would have been better not to get help than to get help from the wrong person. That was my experience and it caused far greater damage. I also appreciate it said that it takes a long time. I didn't heal fast enough for the church. I was told to get over it and get back to work for the church - literally. I left a year ago...my eyes have been opened to the silent carnage left in the wake of this "church ". I no longer see it as a church but as a religion business. Hurting, time consuming type people are a waste of their time and energy. Contrary to what I was told - no, I did not lose my faith - Jesus is my Savior, my everything. I have only lost trust in the institution of big business church. Part of me really would like to be in a church community again but that is not an easy thing and to make it even more difficult I am learning that other churches do not want to "welcome " or "inherit " someone coming in with hurt from a former church. I feel abandoned, shunned. If I get up the courage to express I'm having a hard time to another Christian I get the response to not take on a victim mentality. So the answer is...fake it, put on a cheerful smile, suffer in silence because no one truly cares. People sound caring in videos like this but that's fantasy land.
I hear you. I have also lost trust in the institution of big business church. I hope you can find a caring community of people who are just interested in loving God, loving one another, and loving their community. It's hard to find.
I have been researching churches like it's my full-time job for two years...over 25 churches within an hour drive. I have learned a lot, but it's been a very discouraging process. Some good things about many of the churches, but still none are a fit. The only church found that is operating as a loving, spirit led church is 3 hours away. It does help to hear people who are trying to address hard issues in the church. I am grateful. I am praying it makes a difference for others.
@@shannonsundby5725 that’s really hard. I hear your heart for God and desire to connect with other Christians. Maybe a small group…?
@UncommonPursuit I've tried several small groups. But small groups are connected to churches and when you decide the church isn't the right fit...well, it becomes hard to navigate how to explain kindly to people why the church they have chosen and is the best, isn't the best for me. It is perhaps easier to find a church when you move to a new area - much, much harder when you are in the same community and know people in almost every church.. And the first question asked is why you left your former church. I don't want to speak bad of the church on account of relationships I still have there. If you haven't moved, it is assumed there is church hurt. Churches don't want those with hurt from other churches. Either you are forced to explain and relive everything - because you desperately want someone to believe you or it is assumed that you are the problem. It is a lose-lose situation no matter what. If it causes emotion, which it still does for me, then it is embarrassing, and people don't know how to respond so they avoid or say, you're not trusting God or you just want pity. I simply don't know how to respond. Silence and faking it seem to be necessary. I've fought hard to find my voice...it was in vain. I know why victims of abuse stay silent- because the alternative is much more difficult.
LOL Watching soccer will not encourage me in worshiping Christ! I only like soccer if my grandchild is playing…
I understand! We all have different events that show us what wholehearted worship feels like!
I love the idea of transferring some of my day to day enthusiasm for temporal gods over to God. Every point of awareness that produces even a small redirection of some attention in God's favor counts. Thank you for the enthusiastic and colorful reminder to practice this. Go United!

What a beautiful take on the true potential and power of fasting. Thank you for this.
This was outstanding. Thank you. It is extremely helpful to empower church leaders with more knowledge about the nuances of insurance claims and their lawyers. Few pastors are familiar with these issues until they find themselves in the situation. Thank you.
I appreciate you watching and sharing these kind words!
This is the 2nd video Ive watched from Dr. Averbeck that when asked the question: How does the Law apply today, he does not give a satisfactory answer.
What would be a satisfactory answer?
jesus died for nothing if you don’t sin 😋 nah genuinely i would like to ask for your pov on religion in general because personally i’m an atheist and i’m not trying to be disrespectful by leaving this comment i’m just trying my to learn about other religions
Hey, do you have a specific question about Jesus?
Amen
Thanks for watching!
Philippians 4:4 is not an endorsement for positive thinking or stoicism. Jesus wept,He felt righteous indignation, lamented the stubbornness of His people. The psalms expressed lament and imprecation at times,Ecclesiastes, though gloomy at times, admonished fear of the Lord. The book of Job expressed dealing with pain and suffering.
Yes, it's so important to recognize that God cares about all our emotional experiences, and we can experience his love IN the midst of what we are experiencing.
Thank you for this information. Trying to get our church to handle things better, and get policies in place.... it feels like a losing battle. 😢
I'm glad it gave you some clarity. It really is in the church's best interest. Who could sleep at night knowing they enabled abuse? Or even if they can, the financial and reputational liability is so high!
I love the simplicity. Sometimes we think prayer needs to be this formal thing that happens at certain times when in reality it can happen in a breath.
Great point. And I often feel more connected to God in the moment than when it is a formal prayer (though I can value those too).
I've worked for both several Christian and non-Christian organizations over my lifetime (Im 70 now). If I felt I needed to bring up a difficult issue with leadership, without exception, the NON-Christians were much more open to hearing me out. Now, they weren't willing to change, but they at least heard me out. In all the Christian organizations, they made me the bad/wrong one, and I had to leave. There was no humility or willingness to hear anything I had to say, however gently. Is it any wonder people leave churches?
Heartbreaking. The absence of humility is strikingly hypocritical in an organization run by Christians.
This is an amazing interview. What insightful questions !
Thank you for watching and sharing this encouragement!
I love the clarity and simplicity of this message.
Thank you for watching and sharing this encouraging feedback!
Thank you so, so, so much for the honesty of both people in this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
