Just like many different celebrations (including the previously mentioned Andrzejki), it actually stems from old Slavic customs from pagan times. Since the Slavs were famously difficult to Christianize and didn't want to give up their old traditions, the church eventually had to roll with it, and so the old customs remained, albeit with slightly different interpretations. Wigilia is a remnant of the celebration called "Szczodre Gody," associated with the winter solstice and the transition from the old year to the new.
