Sodium Glow - Our Goals When Working With Artists
Просмотров 6111 лет назад
Sodium Glow discusses our goals when working with an artist.
Hey bro! Loved this video. I'm an artist who has been using the SM7B for almost a year now. I make pop vocals mainly, but I can never get the smooth sound I want no matter how many videos I watch with the SM7B. Usually the problem I have is I end up with it being too boomy or too harsh. Is there any settings you would change for a male vocal? Thank you so much!
Was the mic setting flat?
Would you be able to do one with rap vocals??? This sounds amazing foreal!! Dope
Thanks so much! I have never produced or mixed any rap. So I don't have any examples and it's not really in my wheelhouse.
I keep coming back to this great mixing
what mic u used for her vocals? i see sm7b on title but is that for your narration or for her vocals?
I used an SM7B for her vocals.
What do you mean by channel strip in the phrase “I thought the eq is on the channel strip”, in the DAW, where you manipulate the stock DAW equaliser? I saw the writing “ vocals mono + stereo”, is that some kind of a vocal group or a vocal bus with just the raw vocal tracks? Can you explain more? After rewatching it seems like you meant the stock equliser on the lead vocal track, right? But why is it labeled “mono+stereo”? What tracks does that stock equaliser affect?
Every channel in Nuendo has a built in stock EQ. So yes, I did a bit of EQ using the stock EQ on her vocal. The mono-stereo wording indicates that the vocal track is mono but it's destination is a stereo bus or stereo output. The stock eq only effects the track on which you apply it.
@@davidterry8252 Okay. You used SM7B in a treated environment. Did you compare how SM7B records in studio and non-studio conditions? Did you notice that this microphone has muddy low mids frequency response, in every video I’ve seen, people always remove the frequencies in the 100-200 hz range and somewhere in the 280hz range, in addition to the low cut. I mean, like myself, people notice the boxiness always in the 490 hz range, 145 hz range and 284 hz range for this microphone. But I use it in an untreated situation. The flat frequency response always sounds boxy and unclear to me, like a sound I’m not satisfied out of the box. The most clear and emotional setting for this microphone to me is presence boost, followed by bass rolloff, and the flat setting is last in the row. How does this microphone behave in a treated studio, are the low mids still that nasty and unclear even for female vocals (like woofy artificial bass buildup)? Do you feel like this microphone is more woofy and boxy than even sm57 which is times cheaper?
Awesome review Thanks for sharing!
Amazing! What drums did you use here?
Thank you! I recorded an acoustic kit. I believe it was a Ludwig. I'll have to open up the project and take a closer look.
@@davidterry8252 Thanx)
Nice! I recognize that studio and singer! Cool video!
THIS GUY IS A BEAST!!.
This was so fun to watch. Thanks for the deep dive! Very helpful.
Thanks so much! Glad you found it useful.
This sounds amazing
Thank you Juan!
What a great mix and song!!! Wow... Do you have a video of the instrumental mix of this?
Thanks so much for the kind words! No I didn't do a video on the instrumental portion. Maybe I will! I've been so extremely busy producing/mixing etc I haven't done any videos in quite some time. I'll see what I can do. Thanks again!
@@davidterry8252 thank you kindly for taking the time in replying. Have listened to the song constantly for the last few days and love the smooth production and clarity! I you ever do a video then I can assure you that many of us would be enriched and strengthened with your musical knowledge and production!
@@Mvantonio1973 that's very kind of you! Thank you! I want to make some more...just trying to make the time... I want to do one that features a song that was just released. I mixed it running the steak mix through a pair of line inputs on the Warm Audio WA73 preamps. I have permission from the artist and label to do it...so I will at some point! Thn ks again!
A lot of this is way over my head, I'm just starting to learn. It's a lot of processing - is this because it's a pop song? Would process a modern rock vocal diffrently? How about a retro-70's-style rock vocal (Whitesnake etc.)? Also I should say that this sounds AMAZING. It's very clean, very mellow, but still very moving! I would LOVE to see more tutorials from you.
Also, could you share what kind of vocal editing and/or tuning was done on the vocal before the processing? It's really spot-on pitch-wise. Even though I can hear the singer is great (she is, I say so as voice teacher and as a singer myself), we're all human and today's mics pick up everything. How many takes were combined to create the final one? Would love to hear anything you're willing to share. Thanks!
Also, how far was the singer from the SM7B? So many questions!
How to record with SM7B: just put ten compressors on a track and it's done.
Whatever it takes! :)
@GXRXSYV I'm just commenting on the video. My approach tends more to simplicity, one or two compressors and a deesser, or maybe two deessers. That's all)
I’ve never heard such great production. You keep the dynamic range of the vocal with compression. My question is How? You are a genius. Thank you.
Wow! Thank you!
He mentioned it... Parallel compression.
I have the shure sm7b with the Focusrite scarllette 2i2, wghats the best settings?
The settings you use are totally dependent on the sound you're trying to achieve. So you should start by deciding what it is you want it to sound like then adjust the eq, compression, and other effects to achieve that sound. That's what my approach would be!
how can i contact you?
david@sodiumglow.com
Very good explanation and techniques! Loved all of it!
The vocals sound great! Really nice work on them!
Thank you!
That vocal is incredibly sexy.
Yes also I have recorded one mic into a small old PV amp. Miked the amp on purpose with a $20.00 radio shack mic. Turned destitution on high and played same drum pattern twice. Pan left and right and you get a drum machine loop sound except I really played on drums. My song on www.soundcloud.com/Matt Mendians Please Comply is how I did that.
nice one
Love it many thanks. Just bought the sm7b, comes tomorrow. Currently have the rode K2 mic which is ok but I feel it's a bit harsh......? My NT1 was better (for me) than the K2
Man, this video was fantastic! Would love to see more of your production, production company, and the artists you works with!
Thanks so much! I'm planning on doing some more as soon as I can find the time!
this is not a pro video.why can't you Shaw us your playlist as we can hear that you did automation somewhere in your mix
I'm not sure what you mean. This video was not intended to show automation, playlists, or anything other than how I processed a vocal that was recorded with an SM7B.
Stumbled upon your vid this morning, have been obsessed with this song the whole day - downloaded the superb final mix on iTunes - Beautiful song Beautiful Voice Beautiful Artist - looking forward to more by Kimber ✖
Thank you so much for the kind comments!
What would you like to see me go over on this song?
Sodiumglowmusic My Absolute Pleasure ✖
Sodiumglowmusic Hi David, would be great if you went through your whole mixing process. From prepped recorded tracks to final mix. It’s always great to watch other engineers mix - iLove learning from others & always will ✖
First of all, your mixes are 1000% better than other Yt tutorials...secondly, what DAW is that??..3rdly lol, please make more vids! Instant sub
That is Nuendo by Steinberg. Wow... thanks for your very kind comments! What would you like ep see new discuss on this song? You can pick the next element I go over. Drums? Background vocals? What do you want?
@@Sodiumglowmusic drums please,
@@MetiCudi ...you got it! I'll go over the drum / percussion tracks. Hopefully I can get it done next week. Thanks for watching!
Sodiumglowmusic thanks, cus i always felt that my vocals only got worse with verb and delays, thats cus i always sent til to the master without it being proccessed as a whole, same with the parrarell bus, used to parrarrell only the dry signal and not the vocals as a whole, this helped me sooooo much so i am interested in seeing how you process the drums
Sounds great on my iPhone. I keep trying to make the SM7B work on my wife’s vocal. This gives me a lot of practical things to try! Going to check out the sale on the Waves C6 or C4! Great video!
Thank you so much!
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
