Great beginning. Keep going - and have fun. Extra memory cards are a no-brainer. To me - downloading the SD card daily to a hard drive or flash drive is a must. Glance quickly at the overall exposure and sharpness - and you are in business for the next day. Nothing worth than clicking away happily on a 5 day trip - just to realize, that you got a technical issue with the camera.
How many SD Cards do you have?
i only have 1....in each camera 🙂
Pick up a few extras - you will thank me some day
How many pictures do you have to shoot at a wedding to get that "perfect" shot? Dude, like with everything in life - it all depends.
For me its never RAW always Jpeg. If you are over or under exposing with all the modern in camera tools it's your fault, don't blame the equipment or image format.
Great tips!! 👏 👏 👏 Luckily I have never had a memory fail or get corrupted. I only use SanDisk Extreme Pro 😊
I just ordered 3 REALLY REALLY cheap cards to show why they should never be purchased - unless you are geek like and want to prove a point.
definitely format your card after everytime you have different media on it.
Yes, that is a good point.
get a 12 card holder, use it to hold only 6, and keep one side of empty cards and the other of filled cards. wedding, wildlife, and sports photographer here.
Love that. I will put my cards in upside down when they fill up. Similar technique for my batteries.
I agree with your card rotation tip. I always do this. Here's one you didn't mention. I was an electronics technician back in the 1980s when we would troubleshoot pc boards to component level and fix those boards as well. One habit I have carried over from those days is my concern over ESD when handling electronic components. So, when I remove an SD card from my camera it immediately goes into the card reader and the read has a cap over the USB connector end. When removing the SD card from the reader it immediately goes back into the camera card slot. I never touch the contacts of the card with my fingers....EVER. That will also help keep the contacts free of dirt and oils from my skin. I've considered getting a grounding mat/pad for my desk as well. Haven't gone that far yet! It's snowing here in Pennsylvania......not a happy camper right now... LOL! Have a great day.....
Great tip - oil from fingers can get on the SD Card contacts and even transfer to the contacts in the camera. So, good point.
I've been guilty at times, of not rotating my cards. I have a couple cards that might have over 100K shots on them ? Will they just completely fail at some point ? Or, is it possible for image quality to degrade ???
Unfortunately, when memory cards fail, it’s usually catastrophic-they don’t tend to fail gradually. It’s a good idea to rotate your cards regularly and back up your files frequently to minimize the risk of losing valuable shots.
2:02 was the best comment, absolutely true.
I have been shooting digital photography (as a hobby as well as professional) since 1998, and one tip that I have is to buy your cards from a reliable source and only buy name brand cards such as Kingston, Lexar, SanDisk, Transcend, Delkin, PNY, Sony etc. Don't buy the cheapest card you can find on ebay, it might be a fake and may not last long. I format my cards in camera after I have copied the images to my pc. And I do this after each shoot/trip. I have not had a memory card failure since I started in 1998.
You are spot on. Some cards that claim to be large are frauds - super cheap and claiming to be fast is stopper for me. I get mined from Amazon or Best Buy where I know I can return it if it is not good.
this video doesnt cover how to avoid card failures, just memory card tips
Correct. I see how you got that from the title - I may change that to be more persnal mistiakes. I modified the title to be more accurate: Avoid Memory Card Disasters: How to Be Ready for Every Shoot! Thanks for the feedback
Great advice! I not only carry multiple memory cards, I also carry multiple cameras when I go on a shoot .....Just in case!!
I have several cameras and do take an extra body on paid shoots.
What other Memory Card Tips do you have? amzn.to/4fNj2ni
I always use JPEG.
My Canon 600D and my RP allow me to shoot in CRAW and highest JPEG. Best of both worlds. Pity the R50 can't do that. The R series does in camera lens corrections on Jpegs. Works well. Save me heaps of time.
Thanks. I recently went to RAW only, but will probably go back to the RAW+JPEG.
Please inform yourself about the roll of each format, then do a video with your impressions,,,people now a days we are informed
If you shoot RAW, you have JPEG. If you shoot JPEG, you don't have RAW, it's that simple. With affordable large storage media readily available, I see no reason to ever just shoot in JPEG. Currently, I have my cameras set up to saved JPEG to the secondary card.
I have use cases where I don't need the RAW. But I am usually in RAW only or RAW + JPEG. Thanks
Which do you prefer: JPEG or RAW? and Why?
RAW versus JPG is immaterial, Raw gives a wider editing scenario, Jpg is more limited so needs getting settings right in camera. Sometimes the scenario requires one or the other, mainly for speed in shooting, so just shoot with whichever suits the scenario you find yourself in. Simple as that.
RAW from day one. Storage is cheap compared to the total investment. Getting it right in camera is a given, but years on exactly what I wanted then has often changed and today Jpg doesn't always get me there. One example, back in 2016 I took a panorama don't know why (what would I do with it), but looked good stretched across my monitors. Fast forward, recently purchased a large format printer. I now have my panorama on the wall, only possible because of RAW. So yes, put thought into this Jpg vs RAW thing, we don't always know what the future holds.
Spot on. Storage is definitely cheap and I have a few photos from the past that I wish I had RAWs.
good advice
It would have been helpful to know the Canon model you were using for this video, as it significantly affects memory card write times for saving in full RAW format. For example, consider the Canon R5 Mark II, which has two card slots: CFexpress and SDXC. Saving in RAW to both cards while taking single shots or using a slow burst rate is manageable. However, at 30 frames per second (FPS) with a full buffer, the performance varies considerably. A fast CFexpress card (with write speeds exceeding 1700 MB/s) can handle the burst quickly. In contrast, if you are also saving RAW to an SD card-where the fastest option is a V90 card with a maximum write speed of 300 MB/s-you will experience a lengthy wait for the buffer to finish writing. This situation becomes even more problematic when both card slots are occupied by SD cards. If you’re using a Canon camera with two SD card slots and shooting in RAW, the limitations are clear. For action sports and fast wildlife photography, the best practice is to save RAW (or, even better, CRAW) to Card #1 and medium-resolution JPGs to Card #2. This arrangement allows Card #2 to serve as an emergency backup if Card #1 fails. For those using a single card slot and considering a RAW+JPG setup, be aware of the potential write time delays during fast burst shooting. Additionally, consider the risk: what if the card fails to record? Ultimately, this advice hinges on the photographer’s understanding of their goals and needs.
Yes you are correct that we need to be concerned about write speeds if we need the burstable writes. I was showing my canon R5. But the menu is pretty similar on just about all cameras depending on if there are 1 or 2 slots. Storage is pretty cheap on the backend, but not on the fast CF cards (compared to the standard fast SD cards). But the cry once by once would apply to the CF Express cards - but I like to have a min of 4 cards, so it adds up fast. If I were shooting weddings, I would want to probably have a lot more.
I shoot in JPEG or RAW and in both according with the needs, if need a quick picture that want share immediately or i think the parameters used are right and i think the picture results are good won't be using raw at all just JPEG if think the picture will need further editing and the scene is challenging as for get great results i will shoot in raw or raw+jpeg
That's a web site I didn't know. It worked for a location in Japan I know. I wonder how you would search for a park in Kentucky that gives you great photos of downtown Cincinnati. I had someone tell me on Instagram, thankfully.
I shoot RAW, mostly, but not for sports, and I have no issues with the images. If properly exposed (and I shoot up to 12,500 ISO) the images are great. Big fan of RAW (of course), but JPG has it's place.
Totally agree! I usually go with JPG when I know I won’t be doing much editing. For example, I volunteer to take Santa photos at my local animal shelter and print them on-site, so JPG works perfectly for that. I’m actually thinking about making a video on when I use JPG instead of RAW-maybe call it “Is RAW Overkill?” Thanks for watching!
West Coast of Canada.
Or shoot JPG ( monochrome ) + RAW ( for Canon the CRAW which is compressed, is fine, with no compression issues ). If the lens needs correction only done by JPG in camera, I shoot in JPG (color) + CRAW. I then save the edited photos in at least two hard drives -- some to cloud as well. I same the originals on two drives as well. The original is also proof that a photo taken is your photo. Note that you can edit a JPG done in camera, but you have less data saved in form. The cropping of an image can be one of the most important elements for success. - Loren
Indeed good advice. I used compressed RAW almost exclusively. You get all the post production benefits of a RAW image file but much less storage space is used along with better buffer performance in burst mode.
Bold statement. I shoot RAW+JPEG for years. First of all, the most people edit photos worst than jpeg do. You also not gonna edit ALL of your photos anyway, so JPEG looks much better for overall look when you scrolling. You also can send JPEGs for preview or even as final result. You can test yourself - edit your raw file and compare it to jpegs from camera.
Agree, I only share JPG but ALMOST always start with RAW. There are times I use JPG as I get to in the video. I agree with you on how editing skills vary.
Your splintered photos look amazing! 👏
Thanks for the tip!! 👏
Awesome video
good info
Almost never RAW here (did shoot RAW+JPG for years) because I know exactly what I do, why I do it, and how to expose properly. Do shoot RAW but only when needed (in rare or odd cases). Did work with photographic color for a living for years. Tip: figure out what works for you. That is rewarding fun too.
Thanks. It is interesting when I choose RAW vs JPG. I will probably expand on that topic down the road.
Share a tip with me in the comments and I may use it for a future video.
Here's one: I edit using Darktable (for now) and a landmark new feature in version 5, which was released just 11 days ago, is the ability to apply camera-specific styles for over 500 cameras to RAW images. This means that one can immediately make RAW files closely approximate OOC JPEGs and use the result as a baseline for further tweaking. This reduces a great deal of friction in instances where I'm largely happy with the JPEG and am not looking to create a particularly artful/creative edit with an extensively transformative stack of edits.
@@MM. I have not used darkroom yet, but have looked at it for high volume photography events.
Give me a challenge idea for beginner photographers and I may make a video based on your idea! Leave me a comment.
Thank you for sharing the items from your backpack.
Great for wildlife, not ok for landscape.
I leave it on for landscape as well, but I agree it is not as useful for landscape as it is for more active scenes. I use back button eye focus as well, so I actually have two back button focus options. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your links!! 😊
thanks. The camelcamelcamel website is pretty awesome.
Thank you for providing this video. On my old Canon Rebel EOS 75, I see 2 white rectangles behind each other in the viewfinder that move together to form one image as I adjust the diopter. Is that setting unique to my camera or should I use your technique with this old camera?
I am not familiar with the EOS 75. If you have a diopter dial ( you probably do ) pay attention to those boxes to see if their focus changes as you move the diopter. If you meant EOS 7 then it should be the same as my camera.
@@PracticingPhotography It looks like the model is actually a T5 not a 75 like I mentioned.
Nice gifts. Lovely garden too. 😊 Beautiful day to film
Thanks for visiting

Good advice!
Thanks.
