Roof Rack Rebuild / Basic Welding & Fabrication

With many people interested in learning to weld or work with metal, I thought I would show some basic welding and rudimentary fabrication on this roof rack. This video shows my step by step process from start to finish. The only tools used were a 4 1/2 inch angle grinder, a drill and a small MIG / FCAW welder. Well… if I was featuring a product or doing a product review, that would have been important to include. However, this was not a video to feature a product, but to show what I did to upgrade my vehicle. What is the steering ratio like for these Gen 2.5 Monteros? It sounds like the designers might have reduced the ratio a little bit between the Gen 2 years and the Gen 2.5s but I can't confirm that. If you watch the Motorweek debut of the 1992 Montero SR, the driver input looks insane; especially during the cone maneuverability test. If you've driven 3rd gen 4runners or 1st gen Tacoma's how would you say the steering input compares because they nail that ratio perfectly in my opinion.

    Brian, I have the same issue that I want to fix before summer is out. I looked up the the part number for the temp cable. It's MB813353. it's pretty cheap if it's actually available in the States. I just ordered one, so we'll see. How difficult do you think it'll be to replace the whole cable? It's hard to see how it's attached to the blend door side. If it's difficult I bought a roll pin assortment from HF so i can fix your way. Thanks for the video! It gave me confidence to finally get around to fixing this.

    • @inzmountains8067
      @inzmountains8067 2 года назад

      Hi Mike, I’m glad the video was some help. I do believe you’ll have to take a bit more of the dash apart to replace the entire cable because it is fairly hard to reach at the blend door as opposed to the temporary repair I did at the control knob. I suppose with some long reach, needle nose pliers or something like that it may be easier, but still a fairly tight area to work in. Good luck on your fix. Love the rig by the way.

    I'm actually about to tackle something similar. the heat control won't go past a certain point and I'm certain the either the blend door actuator is sticking/stuck or the cable is damaged. I wonder how hard it is to route the cable to the correct snap locations without taking apart the dash.

    • @inzmountains8067
      @inzmountains8067 2 года назад

      There’s not a lot of room to reroute cables as they are all a very specific length with specific mount locations. To do much reworking, it is likely more of the dash will have to be taken apart.
