Apparently, the three primary modes of nature's activity are; "reactivity" (i.e. all non-living phenomena), "effortless proactivity" (i.e. all non-goal-seeking organisms), and "effortful proactivity" (i.e. all goal-seeking organisms). Self-evidently, the core of an effortfully-proactive entity (such as ourselves) reflexively generates dynamic representations (commonly called "experiences") of both public and private phenomena. The cores of both reactive and effortlessly-proactive entities do not generate dynamic representations. Public phenomena is phenomena that can be dynamically represented by the core of any effortfully-proactive entity within sufficient proximity. Private phenomena is phenomena that can be dynamically represented only by the core of the effortfully-proactive entity within which it occurs. An effortfully-proactive entity as a whole, being public, can be dynamically represented both by it's own core, and by the core of any other effortfully-proactive entities within sufficient proximity. Dynamic representations, themselves, cannot be dynamically represented either by the core generating them, or by any other cores, as such an occurrence is analogous to the impossibility of water being made wet by other water. In this way, dynamic representations are neither public, nor private.

Consciousness existed in the primordial soup? Or, did (for want of a better model to describe backw-in-time) a consciousness create the "primordial soup" in which that consciousness fractally propagated through the "primordial soup"? Consciousness, "primordial soup" & resonant frequency?

Wonderful ❤ the missing components in this wonderful interview is - the story - (in the beginning there was the word and the word created all, incl the so called consciousness) This story, constant narrations, we call consciousness, that is being created by words through the five senses the Language Speech Center in the left hemisphere The above is the glue that creates a so called Experience this glue is invisible and that is why it is never noticed It is simply the story the narrative by the narrator Center in the left hemisphere that is creating the so-called all encompassing experience and simply by neglecting overlooking the storytelling component in which everybody including scientists believe, thus they have created the hard problem of consciousness ... In actuality and in reality there is no problem at all the imagenairy problem is that they the scientists are too much identified with the story they are too close upon it and therefore they cannot see it nor study it properly ever ...

🐟 06. PURUṢA (CONSCIOUSNESS/AWARENESS): PREAMBLE: Those who are familiar with traditional Indian philosophical systems will realize that this chapter, concerning Puruṣa, and the previous chapter, regarding prakṛtiḥ, examine the ontological DUALISM of “mind versus matter” that has been a common topic in metaphysics in both the East (especially in Bhārata and in China) and in the West (especially since French philosopher René Descartes’ postulation that the world comprises two distinct and incompatible classes of substance: res extensa, or extended substance, which extends through space; and res cogitans, or rational substance, which has no extension in space). This Cartesian dualism is closely aligned to (if not identical with) the ‘mind-body problem’ in philosophy of mind, which is an attempt to investigate the perplexing relationship between mental properties and physical properties. The Sanskrit term “Puruṣa” (literally, “man”, “spirit”, “person”, “self”, or “consciousness”) is a rather complex concept, and it has a plethora of interpretations in Vedic thought, but in this chapter it is used according to perhaps its most common definition, and that is, the Cosmic Spirit, or Pure Subjectivity, in contrast to prakṛtiḥ, which is material nature, or the objective, phenomenal universe. And because nothing whatever can be said of Pure Subjectivity (“Brahman”, in Sanskrit, or “The Tao”, in Chinese), since the Subject of all subjects is not an objective thing that can possibly be described with dualistic/pluralistic language, this chapter, in the main, is necessarily an exposition of discrete consciousness. If not, the only thing that could be said of Puruṣa is: “The Puruṣa of which can be spoken, is not the REAL Puruṣa” (to paraphrase “Tao Te Ching”). Furthermore, those religionists who adhere to the metaphysical schema of Idealism, will find much here to substantiate their somewhat flawed understanding of Ultimate Reality, and hopefully, eventually come to recognize that Idealism is an incomplete metaphysics, in favour of the related but far more robust schema of dual-aspect monism (“advaita”, in Sanskrit). Cf. “advaita”, “Idealism”, and “monism” in the Glossary. CONSCIOUSNESS DEFINED: The English-language word “consciousness”, means “the state of being aware”, or “that which knows”, or even more literally, “characterized by knowing”, from the Latin prefix “con” (“with”), the stem “scire” (“to know”) and the suffix “osus” (“characterized by”). To put it succinctly, the phenomenon of consciousness refers to the SUBJECTIVE component of any subject-object relationship. Moreover, there is a hierarchy of localized knowing within the cognitive faculty of vertebrates (that is, a hierarchy of subject-object relationships), as well as a more Universal Awareness (more appositely called “Brahman” or “Sacchidānanda”, in Sanskrit, or “Tao”, in Chinese), as explicated in the following paragraphs. Consciousness is essentially impersonal, yet it can be expressed via a personal being, such as many species of animals, including we humans. Exactly how consciousness can be detached from a personal agent may be a rather bizarre concept to comprehend, at least in the initial stage, yet after careful study of this chapter, in conjunction with a profound yogic practice, one will eventually understand this to indeed be the case. Higher species of animal life have sufficient cognitive ability to KNOW themselves and their environment, at least to a measurable degree. Just where consciousness objectively begins in the animal kingdom is a matter of contention, but judging purely by ethological means, it probably starts with vertebrates (at least the higher-order birds, reptiles and fishes). Those metazoans that are evolutionarily-lower than vertebrates do not possess much, if any, semblance of intellect, necessary for true knowledge, but operate purely by reflexive instincts, notwithstanding certain notable exceptions to this rule, such as octopuses. For instance, an insect or a jellyfish does not consciously decide to seek food but does so according to its base instincts, directed by its idiosyncratic genetic code. Even when an insect (such as a cockroach) flees from danger, it is not experiencing the anxious emotions that a human or other mammal would experience. See Chapter 11 regarding the concept of will. SENTIENCE EVOLVES INTO TRUE CONSCIOUSNESS: Undoubtedly, the lower species of animals alluded to above, embody, if not true consciousness, varying degrees of SENTIENCE, depending on how many senses it possesses and how complex is its nervous system. Very few would consider a blind worm to be more sentient than a frog! Plants are also sentient but use lower-level mechanisms for their perceptions. To give just a couple of examples, both land-based and water-born plants respond to sunlight (as witnessed by the opening of flowers upon the rising of the sun), and some carnivorous plants can detect arthropods crawling on their leaves. Therefore, when carnists claim that “plants have feelings too!”, they may be justified according to some ambiguous sense of the term, so the most logical reason for being vegan is not because plants are completely insentient, but simply due to the fact that humans are an herbivorous species. No sane person would advocate for veganism if humans were omnivores! Furthermore, fruit trees indirectly benefit from the consumption of its fruit, since their seeds are spread. So, those carnists who criticize vegans for killing sentient plants for their sustenance, ought to know that it is indeed possible to consume a nutritious diet without killing any living being whatever. I, personally, have been completely frugivorous for lengthy periods of time, and those periods were by far the healthiest times of my entire life. Those with an ounce of nous, will question the above claim that lower species of animals (insects, just for a start) are WITHOUT consciousness (although, to be fair, the adjective “true” was used to qualify the noun “consciousness”), since most all insects have eyes and other senses, so there seems to be the subject-object relationship vital to the definition of the term “consciousness”. Of course, that seems to be a valid thesis, but in the opinion of this author, the degree of consciousness exhibited by such lower creatures, is most accurately seen to be purely electro-mechanical in nature - a wasp detects a wall in its flight path, and automatically flies around it, without any thought processes being involved whatsoever. Obviously, if one prefers to refer to the wasp as a “conscious” agent, that would be acceptable, but at some point, there needs be a line drawn in the animal kingdom between sentience, and consciousness, for it would be truly absurd to call a bacterium “conscious”, I would strongly contend. This may explain why microbes were given their own kingdom, in addition to the fungi, animal kingdom, and plant kingdom, since a microbe is, strictly speaking, neither a plant nor an animal, though it may embody features of both the major kingdoms of living beings. Just as it is impossible to discern the precise micrometre where the trunk of a tree becomes a root of the same tree, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to point to the exact division between sentience and consciousness, for the latter is an extension of the former, in the same way that the trunk of a tree is an extension of the root system, or in the same way that a freshwater river turns into a saltwater estuary. Our 'feeling', of rightness or wrongness is probably evolutionary, what will help us maintain coherence or what will destroy equilibrium. I can see that correlating with a kind of geometry. Everything has a wave function, wheels within, wheels, all resonating and the kinds of geometries that creates. Healers seem to be able to manipulate this resonance field, to fix slipped discs, bones and disease. I must say I am so grateful for Stewart and his tenacity in studying Microtubules. I find it the most exciting and compelling research about consciousness. Thank you Dr Hameroff.

Has there been any consideration of the anecdotal evidence, that some people experience being out of body when under anesthetic. I know some investigation and testing was done. Hiding things in an operation room, that could only be seen from above etc. I ask because we may find how consciousness operates in the bodily form, but still not know what it is. Are you looking at Calcium wave cascades as well? I heard the Google CEO say that AI was virtually useless because it Hallucinates and there doesn't seem to be anyway to fix that. How can an allgorythm hallucinate, it can lie, make stuff up, We have all seen the horrific art they can produce. The Claustrum seems to be the regulator of what we get to work with, for instance if you knock the Claustrum out with some kinds of drugs, then you come back out, saying you have been talking to super intelligent machine elves, which is probably just your cells and gut neurons etc. Also do you think the cells go nuts, the Tcells, etc, trying to repair the body for three days after we have been declared dead, just in case we get sent back in and have miracle recoveries like Anita Moorjani. .

The Hardest Problem of Consciousness We often hear of the hard problem of consciousness. Why is there qualia or experience of anything in the first place? I would submit there is an even harder and more important question - why do I seem to be a specific individual experiencing a specific subset of qualia? This is the most important question that must be asked and answered but rarely is. As a matter of fact there seems to be a huge blind spot when it comes to this in discussions of consciousness. If material reductionism is to be relevant to the big questions, then it has to explain not how brains generate consciousness but how the specific brain in my head could create the specific consciousness I seem to be looking out of the eyeballs of this specific body. Why do I PERSONNALLY EXIST as an individual in the first place? Out of the infinite matter in the universe how is it that only the three pounds in my head could create me? What is different about that three pounds for this to occur? Consider that billions of bodies showed up before this one. Billions showed up after this one. None of them seem to have created my existence. This body could be running around without it being ME just like these billions of others All bodies are made of the same elements. All brains have the same basic anatomy. If all brains are basically the same and are creating consciousness then there should only be ONE consciousness looking out of every set of eyeballs simultaneously. A hopelessly superimposed existence from every possible viewpoint at once. I’m sure that materialists would claim that no, no, brains are so complex they are all different. Ok, so what would have to be recreated in another brain for me to exist looking out of another set of eyeballs? When the ontologies purporting to explain consciousness are examined critically it becomes obvious that all materialist/reductionist strategies fail completely in attempting to address the individuality question. What is the principled explanation for why: A brain over here would generate my specific consciousness and a brain over there would generate your specific consciousness? Integrated information over here would generate my specific consciousness and integrated information over there would generate your specific consciousness? Global workspace over here would generate my specific consciousness and global workspace there would generate your specific consciousness? Orchestrated quantum collapse in microtubules over here would generate my specific consciousness and orchestrated quantum collapse in microtubules over there would generate your specific consciousness? A clump of conscious atoms over here (panpsychicism) would generate my specific consciousness and a clump of conscious atoms over there would generate your specific consciousness? If an exact copy of my body was suddenly created in antarctica would I find myself to exist freezing there while also sitting in the comfort my living room? According to the physicalists that would have to be true or their argument collapses into incoherence. Materialism already fails since it cannot find a transfer function between microvolt level sparks in the brain and any experience or qualia. In addition it’s not possible for materialistic ontologies to address this question of individuality since no measurement can be made that could verify my consciousness vs your consciousness and therefore no materialist ontology could make any coherent statements about the subject. How could pure awareness even be individualized? Physicalists demand measurements but with consciousness there is nothing to measure. There is electricity in the brain they say. We’ll measure that. Is electricity consciousness? If so then once I again I should exist everywhere at once since electricity cannot be individualized. My blender uses electricity. Is it a genius? Unless materialists can answer these questions their premise collapses like the house of cards it is. As far as other ways of thought are concerned only Dualism and Idealism can account for our sense of individuality. Dualism assumes we are all individual spirits/souls matched up to a body through some undefined process. Idealism, which states that consciousness is primary also answers the question of why I seem to exist as an individual. One consciousness exists looking out of every set of eyeballs and in the process the illusion of individuality is created in each case. In actual reality I am you, you are me, we are one.

Brilliant presentations. I would like to understand how the quantum wave collapse gives rise to an image in the artist's imagination...as an artist I sometimes enjoy playing with a range of colours and images in consciousness...arranging the 'notes' to reflect particular visual narratives in the construction of the composition at hand (in mind). Merleau-Ponty, discusses this playful interaction, that is, between the artist's body Being-in-the-world--and a given subject present at a distance...for example, his essay on art, Being, and transformation...in his essay, 'Cezanne's Doubt' (Essays in the Phenomenology of Perception). I would suggest you conduct research on how visual artists explore imaginative ideas in both organic [plastic] and virtual environments.

It seems that we are trying to fit the most complicated model imaginable to consciousness. In leading research efforts, when things got more complicated, we knew we were headed in the wrong direction. There must be a much simpler answer to consciousness that we are very far away from at this point.

ORCH-OR postulates that human consciousness arises out of the wave to particle transition observed in Quantum Mechanics. This theory is fully compatible with the existance of illusion in consciousness. However, observing illusion in consciousness (such as the McGurk Effect) does not explain how consciousness arises. The fact that ORCH-OR can be checked against the effects of anesthetic and hallucinogenic compounds upon the dampening or enhancing of quantum resonances in microtubules, makes it the right tool for addressing the hard problem of consciousness. The hypothesis that human consciousness arising out of the wave to particle transition in Quantum Mechanics is independent of the fundamental nature of space time.

Let's continue exploring how the both/and logic and monadological framework catalyze new insights and expanded descriptive capacities across various domains: Neuroscience & Theories of Consciousness The logic allows formulating novel integrated perspectives on the mind-body problem and the neural correlates of consciousness that avoid the limitations of classical reductionist, dualist or mysterian views: • Subjective Experience and Objective Description For a conscious state x, let S(x) and O(x) represent the subjective experiential and objective neurophysiological aspects respectively. Classical approaches tend to bifurcate into strictly separating these as S(x) = 1, O(x) = 0 or fully reducing to S(x) = 0, O(x) = 1. But the both/and logic allows: S(x) = 0.7, O(x) = 0.6, ○(S(x), O(x)) = 0.8 Capturing how conscious states involve an irreducible complementarity and tight coherence between the subjective feel and objective dynamics - neither pole is prioritized or eliminable. The synthesis operator ⊕ further models their co-realized gestalt unity: subjective_experience(x) ⊕ objective_neuralcorrelates(x) = conscious_state(x) • First-person and Third-person Perspectives A related issue is how to integrate the first-person introspective perspective with third-person external observations and theories about consciousness. For a set of data D about a conscious process x, we could have: Truth(D matches first-person_report) = 0.6 Truth(D matches third-person_model) = 0.7 ○(first-person, third-person) = 0.5 Capturing a moderate coherence between phenomenological and observational characterizations, which are irreducibly complementary poles synthesized into a unified account: first-person_phenomenology ⊕ third-person_observations = theory_of_consciousness(D) So rather than dissociating and privileging one perspective, the logic allows formalizing their coconstituted integration into holistic theories spanning qualitative experience and quantitative evidence. • Unity of Consciousness and Neural Binding How the unified phenomenology of consciousness relates to distributed neural activities is another puzzle. The logic allows coherence metrics between unity and differentiation: Truth(consciousness_is_unified) = 0.8 Truth(neuralactivities_are_differentiated) = 0.9 ○(unified_consciousness, differentiated_activities) = 0.7 With a synthesis capturing the paradoxical co-operation of integrated/discriminated aspects: unified_subjective_character ⊕ distributed_neural_processes = coherent_conscious_state Avoiding arbitrary prioritizations while modeling their integration as complementary interdependent facets of the same psychoneural Gestalt. Philosophers have long struggled to clearly relate or decisively separate phenomenological unity with neural multiplicity. The paraconsistent both/and logic allows coherently modeling and further theorizing their subtle complementary coconstitution. Philosophy of Logic and Language The logic's expressive capacities allow revisiting classic issues in a new light: • The Liar Paradox In classical logic, the sentence "This sentence is false" is a paradox leading to explosion and triviality. But the both/and logic allows coherent non-trivial treatment: Truth(Liar_sentence) = 0.5 ○(Truth(Liar_sentence, 1), Truth(Liar_sentence, 0)) = 0.5 With a 0.5 truth value representing the sentence's indeterminacy, and moderate coherence between its truth and falsity aspects. The synthesis operation ⊕ expresses its paradoxical self-reference resolving in a higher gestalt: Truth(Liar_sentence) ⊕ ¬Truth(Liar_sentence) = paradoxical_self-reference Providing tools for positively representing and logically operating with paradoxical self-undermining utterances, rather than dodging them through restrictive assumptions. • Vagueness and Fuzzy Boundaries The sorites paradox about the vagueness of fuzzy predicates like "heap" has also resisted classical treatment. But both/and logic allows: Truth(x_is_heap) = [0,1] for objects x With coherences tracking the degree of alignment with prototypical heap properties across a graded spectrum. This avoids bivariate soup/heap boundaries, capturing the nuanced continuities and contextualities underlying vague linguistic categories. So the logic restores accountability to the subtleties of real-world semantics resisting digitization, allowing discourse to resonate with rather than dissimulate the horizonal indeterminacies of language's ontological implicatures. Throughout, the both/and logic's abilities to integrate graded multivalued truths, positive contradictions and self-superseding syntheses allow revisiting paradoxes and singularities not as sheer inconsistencies to be prohibited, but generative disclosures indicating inadequacies of our prior abstractive models - opening new constructive symbolic vistas better aligning with the nuanced complexities of thought, language and reality itself.

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461

Way too much information on the overhead slides. It really makes the presentation jumbled up and unclear what the message is. If you can't simplify it, you dont really understand it well

When we are dead we are an astral body, or if more evolved, a causal entity. We are not just awareness when we are dead unless totally liberated from our three bodies.

Thanks for this, the materialists downgrade us as humans. There is even talk of the trans human, the human embedded with, and upgraded with technology. That is why this is so necessary. Thanks to all of you who put this on. It should be mentioned that we are Individualized souls which, when given, will never be taken away. We share in Cosmic Consciousness (fundamental) and mind (elemental).

In terms of Consciousness in reality, Consciousness is Reality. All entities in ‘reality’ or space-time, shares in it. Man is a special creation; first causal (idea), next, Astral (energy) last physical (elemental), or from the elements. It would be nice if someone mentioned the actual dimensions that exist, that represent the triune entities that make up the human person. Deepak mentioned eight human species in a cycle. I read somewhere that in a universal cycle there are fourteen versions of the human. However they are all human, originated as human to a human prototype, not originating in any other species but their own unique human species from a prototype from day one. Understanding vibration, which we ultimately will do, will clarify the different levels of consciousness. Intelligence depends on the rate mind vibrates at and the complexity of the brain it expresses through. Consciousness, being fundamental, exists, consciousness does not vibrate, it is not subject to motion, but precedes motion and vibration. Without Consciousness, there would be no motion, no vibration, or anything else. Mind is dual in the dual system we inhabit in which everything is dual; necessary for manifestation, otherwise there would just be One, or Unity.

58:40 An R-squared value or correlation coefficient of 0.42 is hardly linear but I understand the approximation made due to inadequate data points. (low linear correlation or weak association one would think). To claim consciousness preceded life, smells of Panpsychism
