At about 10:10pm on 8 Dec 2007 the sleepy town of Wallerawang, near Lithgow on the NSW Central Tablelands, was awoken by a huge blast from the nearby Howard & Sons pyrotechnics factory. The factory was located about 2km west of Wallerawang and 16km north of Lithgow. The initial blast is believed to have been heard 30km away.
