    Unless the underlying stock is collecting significant dividends over the long term don't see much of a point in putting a protective collar over it. If I were bullish on a stock I could write a synthetic long stock or -put/+call/s where I fully pay for the long call/s at a higher strike with the itm-time premium from the short put. Otherwise it's not a riskless strategy - if the underlying stock doesn't move you're on the hook for the short leg and lost all the premium paid for the long leg. For protective collars with stocks there's early assignment risk on the short call side (common dividend capture strategy by deep itm call holders) and there's also the lost premium on the long put side if the underlying never moves. Long/Short Collars either profit from assuming a direction correctly while Long Collars with stock are meant to protect the value of the underlying for a specified time while collecting a limited amount of profit from a combination of the short call sold and dividend distributions if any. It is a good strategy to manage risk but not a riskless strategy all on its own.

    If you sell an OTM call and the stock drops, you haven’t lost anything unless you sell the stock locking in a loss. On stocks that I like, I write calls and hope that the price stays flat, or goes down slightly, thus using the stock as a cash generator.

    Well if you're worried about your shares being assigned, then roll out the option to a further date at the same strike price for more premiums before it expires.

  • @jamiebenti
    @jamiebenti Год назад

    Mark you still here? What do you think about selling a covered call (Tesla), for really deep in thr money, say maximum expiration, maximum bottom of DITM. i.e. - Jan 17 2025 $5 strike, pays $18,500 premium, you own it for 100 shares @ $190 per share. If it drops to say $160... I can buy back the contract and keep the difference. But I can use that premium to trade other companies meantime.

    If TSLA goes to $250 a share and the buyer of the call paid $3000 premium... Doesn't this mean the buyer paid $250 per share ($2,5000) + $3000 premium, for a total of $28,000 for $25,000 worth of stock?? Or am I totally missing something. I'm new at this...please go easy on me..LOL

    The downside to a "covered put" is that if the stock explodes up, you are basically naked a short call, and your face gets ripped off.

    I own 80 shares of Apple for $100. I don't have money for 20 more shares at the moment. But I want to sell a covered call on my Apple shares. Would it be a good decision to buy 20 shares on margin, then sell and in the money covered call for the amount of the margin? My reasoning behind doing this would be to have some downside protection in these volatile markets. What do you think?

    This is great - BUT- you are essentially showing that the selling covered calls have the same risks as owning stock... they can go DOWN- selling covered calls you can also keep it long term (as an investor) or buy the call back and then you have the same option any stock owner has, to sell the position. The risk is the same - going down. The time element is different, but you can buy back the call. With time element taken into consideration, you probably still make out positive on the premium.

    • @markjackson4085
